While trying to create an image to distrubute at work, I wiped my Macbook Air (11inch i5) while booted to an external HD using Disk Utility. I wiped the entire HD, not a single partition, so the Recovery HD is gone. From the Macbook Air...

Boot to an external HD with Lion installed from a USB. The external HD was created on a Macbook Pro using the Lion DMG from the App Store.
Boot to an external HD pulled from a Macbook Pro running Lion.
I AM UNABLE TO...
Boot to USB drive with Lion from the App Store (get null set)
Boot to Recovery HD (as it is gone)
Boot via Lion Internet Recovery Mode (error -2003F)
Boot to a Recovery HD created with Lion Recovery Disk Assistant (get null set)
Boot via Target Mode as I do not have a Thunderbolt cord yet
Boot with a Snow Leopard disc as these machines do not allow for this
I simply want to get a base image of Lion and the Recovery HD reinstated. I am absolutely amazed at how annoying this has become. Any and all ideas are welcome and very appreciated.

I'm in the same boat. I can boot to a Lion disk in an external DVD drive, but it will only display video on an external monitor...

If you can see the iCloud contacts in Outlook, you can copy them back to your PC by selecting all the contacts (click one, then press Control-A), then drag and drop the selected contacts to Contacts under My Contacts on the left sidebar of Outlook.
If you want to copy your calendar back to Outlook, select your iCloud calendar on the left sidebar of Outlook, switch to the list view (select View from the ribbon, then click Change View>List), select your events (click on a single event, then press Control-A), then control drag and drop them to Calendar under My Calendars on the left sidebar.
Then you can sign out of iCloud on the iCloud control panel and your local copies will still be there. If you want to add your iCloud email account back to iCloud, you can do this with these settings: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864.

Is it an iTunes backup or an iCloud backup? If iTunes, connect the iPhone, right click on the name of the iPhone under the DEVICES section in iTunes. Click on Restore from Backup.
If iCloud, on the iPhone go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. When the device powers back on, you will see the original setup screens you saw when your iPhone was fresh out of the box. One of these screen asks you if you want to restore. Choose Restore from iCloud backup.

If the apps are not on your computer's iTunes (did you do File > Transfer Purchases prior to starting the update ?), then you could try downloading them to your computer (re-downloading) and then restoring to your backup and see if that restores them and their settings/content - a backup doesn't contain the actual apps, just their content/settings, so for the restore to work fully iTunes needs access to the apps so that it can restore them.

Hey been there, done that. I moved my music to another external drive and accidentally deleted too much in the process. So the songs are still in iTunes but the Mac can't find them. Not surprisingly.
iCloud and Match are useless as iCloud says about all my songs on the Mac: "Downloaded". What a big help. Transfer purchases didn't work. Not via the iPhone, not via the iPad.
I tried various fixes and loads of software but the first thing that has actually worked is Touchcopy12 for Mac. Sporting a brand-new 2013 Mini now, I tried one song first and when it worked (eureka!) I purchased the software and it's now copying 1800 songs to my external hard drive, right from my iPhone 5.
Not that it was the end of the world but it's nice to have your music when you're at the computer.
