How do I get rid of a scareware program called Mac Protector?

I just got hit with a scareware program called Mac Protector which I would like to get rid of. It pops up **** garbage on occasion and is just a nuisance. Is there a way to get rid of it?
Peace,
Jay

Run ClamXav. It's a free virus checker. It should quarantine it.

You will have to look around your machine & figure out the name of the program.
    try /application/utilities/activity monitor
I recommend that you get a littlesnitch. littlesnitch will track your Web traffic and tell you which applications are sending data from your computer. Be sure to run it awhile because it will trigger a number of alerts. In trail mode, it will run for three hours per boot for a about a month.

This list maybe different in your release of X.
Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

There are many fake pop-ups that will most likely infect you with malware if you let it install.
Only download Adobe updates from adobe.com or macromedia.com websites.

  • How do I get rid of phone contacts "From my Mac" so I can only see iCloud contacts

Since I have upgraded to iOS 5 and now use iCloud for my contacts, how do I get rid of the From my Mac contacts on my iPhone and iPad?
My contacts show groups from both my Mac and from iCloud.

connect the iPhone to the mac, go to iTunes, select the iPhone, in the info tab uncheck the option to sync your contacts. sync now.
Make sure you do a backup(of the iPhone and Mac address book) before you do this. you might need to play a bit with it. If you mess up you will be able to just restore.
i had to try several things before i got the proper iCloud sync working without having to deal with duplicate contacts.

  • How can I get rid of Skype ads on a Mac?

I'm running OSX 10.6.8 and have Skype version 6.15. When I open Skype Home a very large square ad pops up with annoying "meet singles in your area" and so on. I've searched for tips and tricks on google to get rid of this advertising but it seems every fix is for windows. There are some recommendations to install an older version of Skype but someone else found out that Skype won't allow you to use older versions and forces you to update as soon as you launch it. I'm sure there is a crafty way to get rid of the advertising. Nothing in the Skype preferences is helpful (I tried preferences-privacy- and unchecked "allow Microsoft to use your Skype profile information to show you more relevant ads in this application") This was unsuccessful even after logging out-quitting- and restarting. I also went to "notifications" in the Skype preferences and tried to uncheck "display visual notifications" and that was also unsuccessful. Does anyone have a possible fix for this annoying advertising?

Enter 'How to disable Skype ads and banners' into Google for a resume of options that account for most systems.  However, be careful where you download info from.    CNet, for example have ways to help, but I read that CNet are unreliable and have been known to inject Adware or other matter into their downloads.

  • How I can get rid of the Upromise toolbar for Mac Users?

I'm not able to remove a toolbar from my Firefox browser and I don't want it anymore. I am a Mac user and I don't know how to do this and don't know where my options are to make this move or remove the toolbar?
Thank you all for your support and suggestions and Happy New Years guys!

Some extensions install locally to your Firefox settings folder and these are easiest to remove: there should be a Remove button on the Add-ons page. But in other cases, the extensions may be in a shared folder. You can Disable them on the Add-ons page, but you may have to go hunting to find the actual file. Here's how I'd get started:
Open the Add-ons page using either:
    * Command+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then see whether you can remove that one, and disable any other suspicious, non-essential, or unrecognized extensions that could be part of the same infestation.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Does that remove the toolbar?

  • How do I get rid of Cinet Tune Up My Mac pop-ups?

I stupidly downloaded this malware and now new tabs are constantly popping up and talking to me and offering me tune up my mac.  I can't find the extensions to delete.  Any ideas for me?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • How can i get rid of recovered message in my mac?

after I send an e mail with photos attached, this folder 'on my mac' is on my mail and says recovered message, can't delete.
    it keeps popping up.
    Cannot received mail.
I am new to mac I don't know what to do
    D.

I have had the same problem. Probably you have Gmail. When you compose a message Gmail automatically saves a draft every half minute or so to its servers. The problem is with a large email with photos is that it takes a long time. Every time it wants to upload a draft to Gmail, it will remember that. So if you spend like 10 minutes composing your photos message in Mail, Gmail will want to upload the message around 20 times to its servers.
The folder will keep popping up until it has done ALL of the uploading it intended to do. Only after that, you will be able to remove it.
The only way to prevent this misery in the future is to go to Mail preferences > Accounts > select your Gmail account > go to Mailbox behaviors > deselect the "Store draft messages on the server" checkmark.
It's unfortunate that Gmail doesn't give an option to switch off the autosave behavior.
    Hope this helps.
