How do i get rid of junk files

how do i  get rid of junk files

Drag them to the Trash and empty it.
But... be very careful about what you deem to be 'junk' - don't go poking around in Library folders, the System folder, etc., thinking that 'junk' can be found there.
And, for Heaven's sake, don't use any product which claims to 'clean' your Mac - yur Mac does it's own housekeeping.
Good luck,

i have two independent itunes libraries on my computer right now. how do i consolidate them into one library? how do i get rid of duplicate files?

    Hello rmunsey,
Thank you for the question.  It sounds like you have two separate iTunes Libraries but would like to add the music from one to the other to have one consolidated library.
If you know where the files are for each library, I recommend opening one iTunes Library in iTunes and importing the files from the other library using the following steps:
    Open iTunes
From the File menu, choose one of the following choices:
    MacAdd to Library
    Windows
    Add File to Library
    Add Folder to Library
Navigate to and select the file or folder that you want to add
Adding music and other content to iTunes

Next, you can search for duplicates:
Choose View > Show Duplicate Items to show duplicate items (matches are based on the song name and artist). If you have multiple versions of the same song (for example, live and studio versions, or versions from different albums) you can hold the Alt or Option key (for Mac OS X) or the Shift key (for Windows) and choose View > Show Exact Duplicate Items. This will show only duplicate songs having the same name, artist, and album.
How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library

This should help you identify the duplicates all at one time so that you can delete the extra versions of songs.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

How do I get rid of junk in my MacBook 10.6.8

What do you mean by "junk"?

  • How do I get rid of "unreadable files" when I am importing from my camera?

How do I get rid of "unreadable files" when I am importing from my camera?

Are all images unreadable? What is the exact error message you are getting?
If only a few images are unreadable, try to import not all photos at once, but in smaller batches, until you know, which photo it is that cannot be read. Import all photos that can be read and reformat your card in the camera to remove the unreadable files.
But if all photos are unreadable, try, if Image Capture can read your card.
Is it a new camera? Have you been able to import from that camera before?

  • How can I get rid of cache files?

Premiere Pro, can't find cache files on Mac, not in the common folder, clean doesn't work, I know there are Gigs of them on my drive.  How can I get rid of them?
I started a premiere project I had worked on before using an external drive but forgot to hook up the external drive.  In a few minutes, Premiere loaded 5 gigs of cache files onto my macbook pro drive OSX 10.8.6.  I tried the following to free up the space:
Tried to "clean" the cache folder before switch it to the external drive - this only removed a small amount of the 5 gigs created
Tried to find files in the Application Support/Adobe/common folder - no cache files found
Tried searching the web for answers - no new info
Tried searching my drive for the files - can't find them
Tried restarting the MacBook and Premiere with and without the external drive - no luck
    Now what?

Reason: please make a shorter and more concise title next time. Thanks.

First off, exactly which version of Premiere are you running? Not simply PPro CC or CC2014 but the version number shown in the About box.
I'm not clear whether you're saying that Premiere can't find the cache files or that you can't find them.
I gather that you're referring to the Clean button on the Media tab of the Preferences dialog, which is also where you set the path for the cache files.
Are you sure you're looking in the correct Library--not the one that's readily accessible under Macintosh HD but the one that Apple, in it's infinite wisdom, hides from users. To access it, open the Go menu and press Option.

  • How do I get rid of 'orphaned' files

    Hi,
What is a good software (free preferably) to use in order to get rid of 'orphaned' files I seem to have migrated over from my old iMac? For example, I have Virtual PC, Print Explosion, Otto game, etc. in there as well as many other orphaned files/folders like this that I won't be using on my Macbook Pro. Is there a software that will detect these so I can SAFELY get rid of all these unnecessary files? Please advise.

This isn't an endorsement since I haven't used it.

Also get EasyFind and search manually (excellent, I have used it.)

  • How do I get rid of ._file files?

I know that some of users do not see them in Finder, but they are there and they mess up media cards. While they are useful on Mac OS X, they are garbage interfering with other systems. Try media card and put into a device (e.g. electronic picture frame) when you copy files. There will be a lot of reprots: "unsupported format" on those files. Of course they are not media files, but Mac OS X metadata which is useless on other platforms.
Simply put do you know how to:
    1. Avoid copying those files to media cards/drives/network locations? (any setting in config or else?)
    2. Once it is copied how to get rid of them the easiest way (I mean is this possible without mocking shell script: for... ls -la...do ... rm... done e.t.c.)?
    Thanks,
    Maciek

Personally I got some help in the Applescript forum and Niel came up with a great script to do what I wanted, namely strip the resource forks and the various dot files from a folder of things headed to a thumb drive and from there to my Windows box:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4537521
Unfortunately the forums' software introduced a format scheme that has wrecked posted Applescripts (the new formatting removed several slash / characters and replaced them with a carriage return). I put my copy of the script up here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/CopyStrip2Fat.zip
Download, unzip, then open it in Script editor and change the name of destination volume (it has my transfer thumb drive's name, /Volumes/FAT/items, meaning it puts the stripped things in a folder named "items" on a thumbdrive name "FAT"-- change that to what you are using).

  • How can i get rid of Backup Files?

    Hi,
whe using "Write To Measurement File" and  "Read From Measurement File" i read and save to the same file (i.e. "example.lmv"). When i run the program and the signal is saved in this file, the information is saved in the file but at the same time it creates a "backup" file; I noticed that this is caused when i use "Read From measurement file". Is there any way that i can run the program, without creating this backup files? I run the program many times a day and i dont want to fill my computer with these files every time i run it.
    Thank you for your help,
    Guillermo
P.S: I attached an example VI and the file where the signal is saved.
    Solved!

Thanks for your help again.  The VI that i sent you was a mere example of the true program that I am working on. This program controls a motor and rotates it counter clockwise and clockwise. I can only rotate the motor a maximum of 360 degrees so i set up the program to give me an error whenever I rotate the motor 0 degrees or less and 360 degrees or greater. To do this, I write the mount of degrees desired on a file ("Write to Measurement File") and the next time i rotate the motor I use the "Read from Measurement File" to read the previous amount of degrees that i wrote and adds it to the new one and saves it again on the same file. When this number of degrees reaches 360 degrees, it gives me the a message that i have to change the direction of the motor. The issue that i want to fix is that every time i write to the file it also creates a backup file and i want to get rid of it so i dont have a new file created every time i run the program. I noticed that whenever i use a program that just writes on a file using "Write to Measurement FIle" it writes on that file, only, and  does not create a backup file. Whenever i use "Read to measuremnet file" to then write the signal in "Write to Measurement File" the backup file is created; so i came to the conclusion that is the "Read to Measurement File" that is creating this backup. Is there any other way to call a file without creating this backup file?
Here i will add the three VI's so you can see what i mean. I will add the full program, and the two examples that i explained above.
    Thank you,
    Guillermo Naranjo.

  • How do i get rid of old files previously networked to Distributed Sytem Manager so as to create a new network file, all files have been deleted off my laptop already?

6 old network files keep showing up in Labview even though they have been deleted from both labview and removed from my laptop. Why does labview insist on keeping them in this history as now it will not allow me to network a new file
    All help appreciated.

Got this issue resolved, basicaly what was happening was in the distributed system manager old copys of libraries which I had created previously and deleted kept showing up in my networked items and i could not delete them, what i had to do was to stop process and remove process on any that were showing up then reboot my laptop and this deleted them off the system altogether, this was time consuming for me as I had a load of old libraries to delete before i could network my new library. Eventually got it working after my laptop reboots.

  • How to get rid of large files generated by Final Cut X ?

My hard drives are getting increasingly full and I think its Final Cut render files or something similar.
How do I get rid of the files Final Cut creates for old projects without hurting those projects (in case I want to resurrect them) ?
Are the rider files stored within the huge library file, or in a certain location?
I have my settings as "in library" for Media and Cache.
(If I cmd-click (or right click) the library, show contents it does show a folder with a date, in my case 2-24-15, then a subfolder called Render Files.   Can I just trash all of these within the library?)

Select  library and go to "File->Delete Library Generated Files" (or similarly select just an event or project, the wording of the menu will change accordingly).
You can then elect to delete render files (all or just the unused ones), proxy media and optimized media.
None of this will prevent you from working on your projects. Probably you don't need them anyway, and if you do you can always regenerate them later.
(It seems that many people check to create proxy and optimized media on import - this is usually unnecessary and especially optimized media can take a LOT of disk space, often ten times as much as the original)
