I have this big list of places i visited when i key that little down arrow at the address line. I went to help, but i could not make heads or tails of what i was supposed to do. In simple english,how do i get rid of the list?

No way to turn them off, however, you can hide cover flow in the Bookmarks Manager by dragging the small rectangle box below the cover flow scroll bar upwards.
Top Sites icon can be removed from the Bookmarks Bar via Safari Preferences>Bookmarks.
In Safari Preferences>General, you can dictate what occurs when you open a window or page. Change from Top Sites to something else.

Further down in the 'Get Info' dialog, is the 'Ownership and Permissions' section also greyed out? If not, then try changing the permissions there.
If that doesn't work, you can use the Terminal app and Unix to set the permissions recursively throught the Aperture library. If you need to do that, I'll tell you how.

How do I get rid of the Google that sits on the page. I think I have the right to deside when I wish to use google - no body else.

Thanks for the thought - but I probably do not understand. I expect to see "About:blank". If I set that up I get instead "About:home" and even then it seems google is still in the center of the page - and there is even a list of "abouts" to consider.
I must have a search engine of some sort - I would prefer one that is not doubling up as a statistics collector. I want to be able to get an empty page with the option to put in my search (or address) at the head and not see anything else. Every time I experiment with that need, eventually Google comes back. On my ipad, there are dozens of "recently purchased" songs supposedly available for download from iCloud. I don't recognize most of the songs - they could have been downloaded 6 years ago by my daughter. How do I get rid of them?

So there are all these songs, from ADELE to Zapp and Roger. I don't recall purchasing any of them. Some of them were clearly purchased years ago by my daughter, who now has a different account (and doesn't know the current password to my account).

Entries in the location bar drop down list with a yellow (blue on Mac) star at the right end are bookmarks. 
You can remove such a bookmarked item that shows in the list if you open that url in a tab and click the yellow star in the location bar. 
This will open the "Edit This Bookmark" dialog and you can click the Remove button to remove the bookmark if you want to remove such a bookmarked entry.
