How do I get rid of startup items?

How do I get rid of items that show up when the computer starts up?

Hello Pywest,
You can remove start up items in your system preferenes.
 > System Preferences > Users and groups and then select log in items that you want not to start upon boot up.
Best regards,
Brandon

• How can I get rid of "locked items" in Trash?

I am deleting old Time Machine files from my external drive, using my MacBook Pro (2007) to do it. I've been doing this for several weeks, but now when I'm in Trash and click "Empty Securely" I get this message: "There are some locked items in Trash. Do you want to remove all the items, including the locked ones, or just the unlocked items?" Regardless of whether I click on "Remove unlocked items" or "Remove all items", the process stops almost immediately and the Trash remains full. What might be the "locked items" and how can I get rid of them?

You might try restarting and then try to empty the Trash.
If that doesn't work, see -> Solving Trash Problems.

• How do I get rid of unwanted items listed on my Finder's places list? my finder

On the left side of my Finder window I have a blue background column with a list of items under "DEVICES", "PLACES" AND "SEARCH FOR". Somehow I got two items stuck in my list under "PLACES". One is a scan.jpeg. The other is an iTunes file. I have no idea how I did this. It doesn't seem to affect anything but it is annoying to me to have it there. Is there any way to delete them from this list? I have tried to do this every way I can think of and nothing works. As I wrote this, I thought I would try one last time. Finally was able to get a right click drop down for the iTunes file which gave me the option of removing it from the list. The other is still there. It will not highlight. I can drag it away from the list, but it won't land anywhere except a different place in the "PLACES" list. Any ideas?

Hey, just saw the trick about holding the Command key down while dragging the file out. Wonderful to see that "poof" and no more file. Would still like to know how I could have gotten these [as someone said "empty shells"] there, so I don't do it again.

• How do I get rid of "Selected Item" window?

Just updated iTunes to version 7.5 and I notice a window below the listings of my playlists (left side of screen), thus reducing the number of playlists that I can see. I would rather that the "now playing/selected item" window not be there so I can see more of my playlists and reduce scrolling. Is it possible? Thanks.

If your CDs are marked as Compilations then you can see them by switching on the compilations feature in the browser. Go to Edit>Preferences>General and check the box "Group Compilations when browsing". When you switch the browser on Compilations will be the first item in the Artist pane, click on it and your compilations will then be listed in the Album pane. If you made these CDs yourself you'll need to mark all the tracks as part of a compilation and give them an album name (you can use the name of your playlist for example). To change the info on multiple items such as all the songs in a playlist, click on the first track you want to add information then while holding down the shift key click on the last track in the list, this will highlight all in between. Right click on the list and choose Get Info, you get a dialogue box asking if you want to update multiple items, click Yes and then the Info tab. Type in the album name and choose Yes from the drop down menu below "Compilation" which is on the bottom row of the info window then click ok and this will ensure the whole selection is identical.

I have the iPhone 4, and yesterday I synced my photos onto iTunes, but now I have albums on my phone that cannot be deleted, and there is not an option to delete the items in the albums individually... How do I get rid of these unwanted albums? Using Windows 7.

If you used iTunes to get the photos on the phone, then use the same iTunes and uncheck the music you don't want and do another sync.

• I have an app update on my phone through the app store, but i dont have that app and when i hit update it says the item is no longer available for sale,, but i cannot get rid of the little 1 at the corner of the app store app,, how can i get rid of it

i have an app update on my phone through the app store, but i dont have that app and when i hit update it says the item is no longer available for sale,, but i cannot get rid of the little 1 at the corner of the app store app,, how can i get rid of it,, i have iphone 5

You installed a hacked app, originally from the Mac App Store. It contains the receipt for a different app, downloaded using an account that you don't control. You need to identify and remove the hacked app.
Important: The app you need to remove is not necessarily the one named in the App Store notice. For example, if the App Store says you need to update "Twitter," the hacked app may be "Angry Birds" or something else entirely. Don't make any assumptions about which app you're looking for. To find it, you have to carry out a systematic search.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
kMDItemAppStoreHasReceipt=1
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
In the Finder, press the key combination command-F to open a search window, or select
File ▹ Find
from the menu bar. In the search window, select
Search: This Mac
from the row of tokens below the toolbar. Below that is a popup menu initially showing Kind. From that menu, select Other...
A sheet will drop down. In that sheet, select Raw Query and click OK or press return.
Now there will be a text box to the right of popup menu. Click in that box and paste (command-V).
The search window will show all the App Store products you've installed. Compare those search results with the list of your purchases from the App Store. To see the complete list, you may need to unhide hidden purchases. If any apps were download from the App Store using other Apple ID accounts that you control, sign in to the store under each of those ID's and check the purchases.
At least one of the items listed in the search window is not among your purchases in the App Store. Move each such item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Empty the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Test.

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there.
''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
* You can open the Firefox 4.0+ SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running.
''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
'''''If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
• How do I get rid of the prompt to unlock the "Local Items" keychain in various applications?

How do I get rid of the prompt to unlock the "Local Items" keychainin various applications?

Generally the easiest fix is to go into Finder. Click go at the very top of your screen. Hold down option, you will see a Library folder pop up. Go into the Library and then into Keychain. Delete everything in this folder. Restart. If that doesn't fix it go to Spotlight (the little magnifying glass in the top right) type Keychain Access. Make sure the little lock in the top left of that window is unlocked. Hope this helps.

ipadmini inbox maintains there are 907 items in inbox, but I have deleted all items. How do I get rid of the numbers?

You can't delete the All On My Mac as it is an automatic group to display all of the contacts that are stored "On My Mac." You can delete all of the contacts that are in the ON MY MAC section by selecting All ON My Mac and then selecting all contacts. Press delete and approve the deletion. Then, select each group under ON My Mac and delete those individually.
Then, Make sure iCloud is set as the default account in the General Address Book Preferences.

There are several login keychain items I'd like to get rid of. I've deleted them but they come back after several hours. How can I get rid of them for good.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select
Change Settings for Keychain "login"
In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.

Keep login keychain unlocked
is not checked, check it.

If you do not want to see snippets on the about:home page or if there are problems with a snippet then you can set the browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl pref to an empty string on the about:config page.
Delete the storage\persistent\moz-safe-about+home folder in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed ("3-bar" Firefox menu button > Exit/Quit) to remove snippets stored in IndexedDB and make Firefox use a default snippet set.
You can reset the browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl pref via the right-click context menu to the default value to re-enable the snippets and make Firefox recreate the moz-safe-about+home folder.
Close and restart Firefox after changing the value of the browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl pref.
You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar.
You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
