Want to get rid of "top hits" prompts coming up when I start typing a web address.

I doubt there is a way to disable that without deleting history and bookmarkd.

The drop-down from the URL/Location/Address bar is suggesting items from your History and/or Bookmarks. To control what is displayed set the option at:

How can I get rid of top hits in safari on iPad Air.

I've tried everything I can think of to get rid of top hits suggestions in safari on my iPad Air. I've gone into settings and turned off top hits and also cleared history and cache and cookies and yet I'm still getting top hits coming up. I'm using the privacy option and have also rebooted my ipad with no success. Any more suggestions as I don't want top hits showing when in safari, many thanks.

You can go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, cookies and data and then delete every bookmark and that should clear it temporarily, but it will only be temporary. As soon as you starting using the search again, then suggestions will appear again.
I think that I may have misread your question - if you want to clear all of the history - use the Clear History button in the upper right corner of the History window. You cannot delete one item at a time.

I'm fairly certain that would be illegal of Apple. They MUST provide a way to remove all history, and Top Hits is just an especially annoying form of history.

The way you remove songs depends on the model (1st and 2nd gen versus 3rd and 4th gen), and the method being used to add songs. I don't know your specifics (please provide), I'll go with one possibility...
You have a 4th (current) gen shuffle and you use the manual method to load the shuffle, by dragging songs to the shuffle from your iTunes library in iTunes (or using the Autofill feature). If that is your shuffle model and how you load it...
First, in the latest iTunes, the sidebar can be hidden. To show it, go up to the menu bar, under View, and select Show Sidebar.
To remove songs, select the shuffle in the sidebar, under DEVICES. "Drop down" its content list, which is indented below the iPod. Click on Music there. Over to the right, you see a list of songs currently on the shuffle. Select the song you want to remove, and hit the Delete key on keyboard. Confirm action. You can do this with one song, a selection of songs, or the entire list (by selecting Select All from the File menu).
If you have a 1st or 2nd gen shuffle, or you use automatic syncing (not manual loading or Autofill), please post back.

If you are referring to Safari on your Mac then in Safari > Preferences (command-comma), on the General tab you can change 'new windows open with' and 'new tabs open with' to be your homepage instead of 'top sites'

Heheh, it's Mozilla being cheerfully quirky on the Firefox page (you are talking about the Mozilla Firefox Start Page or "about:home", right?).
If so, Mozilla will be changing it with another image in the future; I don't know when, though. For now, you have a few options:
* Set Google/Bing/etc. as your homepage so that you won't see the Start Page when Firefox launches.
* Use the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/?src=userprofile Stylish] extension to remove the image.

That sounds like a lot of work, but in the vast majority of cases the lookahead will only have to look at one character before yielding.
"<(?:(?!copyright|[<>]).)*>" This is basically the same as the second regex, but it does all the real work in the lookahead. I don't recommend it; it's less readable and probably less efficient than the second regex. But both the second and third regexes can be made more efficient by using [possessive quantifiers|http://www.regular-expressions.info/possessive.html] (that whole site is highly recommended, by the way): "<(?:(?!copyright)[^<>])*+>", "");
