How do I get the iMac to display thumbnails and not an icon of jpeg photos?
Hi folks,
I just purchased my first Mac, an Imac. I was browsing through a folder, using Finder, containing photos files from my latest trip.
Under Windows, I used to tell Windows Explorer to show thumbnails of the photos.
How do I get the iMac and Finder to show the thumbnails? It only wants to show a silly jpg icon which doesn't tell me much about what the photo looks like.

I have a folder of JPEG photos on my HD. This folder was created over a year ago when I was using Panther.
When I open it and select "Show View Options" I get a different window with options like "Date Created" and "Date Modified" etc.
There is no preview option or a slider to alter the icon sizes - merely a choice of large or small icons.

Reduce the resolution.
The picture will display as thumbnail on the phone when a call comes in.
Since Mountain Lion I had full screen caller pictures even when assigned in the OS X adress book.
In my case I reduced the picture to 64 x 64 pixels.
Then it showed as thumbnail as calls came in.
I don't know where the exact maximum pixel size for thumbnail display is.
If you find out, tell us.
This bugged me a long time and I would enjoy if this could help you.

Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.). Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular FREE storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website. Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight! Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File. This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days. There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
Check for duplicate fonts.
Applications>Font Book
Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

HOW do I get the "watch" to stay on and not shut off on my 6th GEN NANO?
After purchasing a $70 cool watchband for my new 6th GEN NANO, I'm very disapointed that I can't get the "watch" function to stay on more than 15 seconds. AppleCare says that it isn't meant to stay on, it would run down the battery. Then why put on 16 watch faces, and show it as a "watch" on everything you publish? Doesn't make sense you can watch TV shows and movies, but doesn't have enough battery to run a watch face. BAD design, and shame on APPLE for selling a dozen different watchbands in their stores. Now don't you think the store salesman would say "are you thinking of wearing this as a watch, or to hold your NANO while you are at the gym"? 15 seconds is often not enought time to get setup and take someone's blood pressure. I don't think I need to offer an explanation of WHY a watch should work more than 15 seconds without pushing a button, do I?
This is getting silly, but I'm not too young to remember the early digital watches. The difference is that we knew what we were buying . jThey were upfont about the FACT that the watches didn't stay on. And how well did they sell as watches? Hmmm I don't think any of us said that Apple was pushing Nano primarily as a watch. That said, this is not a third party "app" either .... 18 clock faces come with the Nano as a "feature" of the product. It's not a "digital time read out"... it's made to look and act like a watch. Apples own website touts that you can change its face "to match your mood or your outfit".... The bands they sell range from $20 bucks to like $150 bucks.... This is a HUGE money maker for them. It is THESE KINDS OF FEATURES that brings people back buying new ipods, because like I said, without them, I have plenty of devices that already "record music", or "store pictures". And your other points have zero merit. Go to the Apple website to the Nano 6 page where Apple touts all of its merits. This is where Apple explains the features of their product. I've already returned the ones I bought as gifts, because when I showed my neices and nephews MINE, and the disfunction of the watch, they all lost interest in keeping theirs, and opted for other Apple devices instead. And if you still don't think they are marketing this Nano as a watch more than iphone, touch, pad, or classic, then I throw up my arms, and say Happy New Year. After updating to 10.6.3, I installed the 10.6.8 update just to start experiencing these font issues. HELP! How do I get the fonts to display correctly in my browsers especially (Chrome & Safari)
What I ended up having to do was open up the Font book & remove duplicates. I knew it was Arial that was causing the problem, so I deleted the duplicate of that font. Inadvertantly I deleted all the Arial regular font, so I had to reinstall one copy. That was the solution. Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options, press the padlock at the bottom left corner of the System Preferences window and choose the second user account next to "Automatic login". Your computer will always log in to this user account whenever you start up Mac OS X.
If you haven't got anything in the first user account, you can remove it from System Preferences > Users & Groups after logging into the second user account -

You may the sort set to Custom. Click the dropdown menu on the toolbar (to the right of the word sort) and change to capture time.
