How do I get things out of my startup disk?

I have a 2007 MacBook and i am getting the message that my startup disk is full.  However, I do not know how to find out what is in my startup disk so that I can figure out what to delete.  Can anyone help?
Thanks.

    How do I get more space on my startup disk?

    Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
    You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
    You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
    Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • How do I get things off my start of disk with out losing them?  I am new to this and my computer is letting me know that my start up disk is almost full

    Don't want to lose things.  I have the apple back up... just not sure how they all work..:(

    Please follow the directions in this support article. If there's no change, see below.
    Back up all data. Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to keep or delete the keychain items. Choose to delete and confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device. Test.

  • How do i get things out of the cloud?

    suddenly, every tv show and song i have ever bought is showing up on my apple tv and my iphone.  I guess they are stored in the cloud?  i want to delete some of this media forever.  how do i do that?

    That's great.  Thank you.  I feel I am understanding a little bit more about my "cloud."
    So - my purchases will not fill up said cloud.
    But, presumably, a day will come when I am ashamed and or ambivalent about all the episodes of REAL HOUSEWIVES OF BEVERLY HILLS staring back at me from my Apple TV.
    It seems I can hide them, but I can't delete them.  Not really.
    So, this posse of botoxed ladies in high heeled sandals skittering around ritzy locales (nary a "cloud" in their skies) are with me forever.  Like a virus.  Or a pack of anciet Greek Harpies.  Even if I can't see them on my playlist, even if they are invisible ghosts, I still know they are there.  They exist always.
    I mean, even if I were able to delete the episodes from my Apple products (which I love BTW) there is always the chance that I could RUN INTO one of the actual flesh (questionable) and blood "ladies" in REAL LIFE - on the streets of Los Angeles.
    How would that affect my cloud storage?
    If I bump into Taylor Armstrong and ask her about experiences on the show - am I risking anything intangible or invisible?  Does Taylor keep old episodes on her Apple TV, in her cloud?  Now that the show has driven her husband to suicide and then publically aired his "execution" (and let's be honest, that's exactly what season 2 was) has Taylor thought about expunging the record of her exploitation from her own cloud?  Is the deal she made with Bravo more binding than the User Agreement she (we) never even scrolled through before joining iTunes?  Are the mistakes she/we made going to follow us around for the rest of our lives?  And continue on into the millenia as our children, Taylor's daughter Kennedy, someday gain access to our purchase lists and see exactly what we've done?
    I bought these shows, I watched these episodes.  I can hide them, but they'll always be there - for me (against me).
    Something good can come from this, right?
    It's all going to be OK?

  • How do I get iTunes out of my startup menu?

    Will sound strange, but I never use it. I have it just in case. If I don't want it in my startup menu period, do I have to uninstall it or is there another way. This is on a pc, not my mac. Will not use it on the mac either!

  • How do I get automator to specify a startup disk?

    I want to automate the specification of startup disks as I tend to frequently swap between a few systems. I fired up automator, hit the record button and proceeded to select the system preferences pane from the apple menu, selected startup disk pane and then clicked one of the disks. Automator listed my steps and it looked fine. However, when I play the script, instead of clicking once on the system preferences menu item it clicks twice on the app store menu item, resulting in an error. Obviously, I'm doing something wrong, so I'd appreciate some help. Thanks.

  • Help, I've got a small CD stuck in my MacBook Pro. How do I get it out?

    My tax guy sent me a tiny CD and, full of doubt, I stuck it in my MacBook Pro, where it remains. How do I get it out without taking apart my machine?

    Yup, that's a one time deal for sure. I didn't want to stick anything in there, and it hadn't engaged, so following some of the advice in the link you posted I turned off the machine and simply shook the little ******* out of there. I was able to grab it with my fingers no problem. Much better and simpler than sticking things in there haha. The solution was so simply I'm embarrassed I didn't come up with it on my own.
    Thanks for your help!
    And thanks to everyone who responded, in case you see this reply.

  • I tried to encrypt using file vault but it froze slowing my macbook pro, how can i get things moving or stop the encryption

    i tried to encrypt using file vault but it froze slowing my macbook pro, how can i get things moving or stop the encryption

    Back up all data before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Disk Utility.
    In the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the startup volume from the list on the left. It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. When prompted, enter the login password of a user authorized to unlock the volume, or the alternate decryption key that was generated when you activated FileVault.
    Then, from the menu bar, select
              File ▹ Turn Off Encryption
    Enter the password again.
    You can then restart as usual, if the system is working. Decryption will be completed in the background. It may take several hours, and during that time performance will be reduced.
    If you can't turn off encryption in Disk Utility because the menu item is grayed out, you'll have to erase the volume and then restore the data from a backup. Select the Erase tab, and then select
              Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    from the Format menu.
    You can then quit to be returned to the main Recovery screen. Follow these instructions if you back up with Time Machine. If you use other backup software, follow its developer's instructions.
    Don't erase the volume unless you have at least two complete, independent backups. One is not enough to be safe.

  • Try-catch blocks.  How do you get variables out?

    Hey guys,
    I have several try-catch blocks around potential NumberFormatException's. Well the variables and values given inside the try-catch block can not be used outisde, so how do i get them out or use them outside this block.
    Is there a way to kind of pass it out, or to take the variable outside the try-catch block?
    Gary.

    Declare the variable before the try block:
    public void foo(String number) {
    int i; // Unknown
    try {
    i = Integer.parseInt(number);
    } catch( NumberFormatException e ) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    System.out.println(i);
    variable i might not have been initialized
                   System.out.println(i);
                                      ^
    Or declare the method as throwing the exception so
    that you don't have to handle it directly
    public void foo(String number)
    throws NumberFormatException
    i = Integer.parseInt(number);
    System.out.println(i);
    }Not the best example, in this case. But it works for some things.
    Or make use of the variable within the try block so
    that you limit its scope to the degree possible
    public void foo(String number) {
    try {
    i = Integer.parseInt(number);
    System.out.println(i);
    } catch( NumberFormatException e ) {
    e.printStackTraceException();
    }Definitely missed declaring i, but I like this one best ;~)
    Each has its benefits. Depends what sort of method
    you're writing - if failure of the try block causes
    the whole method to fail, don't try to handle the
    exception locally, put the throws in the signature. ~Cheers

  • My charger broke off in my iPad mini how do i get it out

    my charger broke off in my ipad mini.. how do i get it out or where can i bring it to fix it

    The tweezers are a good idea. just don't go digging to the point that you may scratch the case. Because, unfortunately, if you do and if you have any issues with the port in the future,  those scratches may be enough to void any warranty coverage.
    A delicate touch is what's needed.

    Will not work.  To my knowledge, dual converting like that isn't supported.  The Mac must detect the connected video output device and that sort of info cannot be done across an analog component uni-directional connection.

  • My iPod touch is in recovery mode, how do I get it out of this?

    My daughter's iPod touch is in recovery mode (we know this by the code it gives us when she plugs it in to the computer), how do we get it out of this?  We have tried resetting by holding down the on/off button and the other button on the bottom front of the iPod for 30 seconds to a minute and nothing happens.

    Two ways to get the iPod Touch out of recovery mode.
    From iTunes click "Restore" this will download the latest iOS for your iPod Touch and install it.
    Second way is to press and hold both the home button and the sleep button for around ten seconds and release them when the Apple logo shows on the screen.
