How do I get this edge effect

I pulled a photo from a pdf for online viewing so it is poor quality. It shows an effect - blurry edges - which I have tried to put onto a photo but I cannot do it. Most of the effects I have tried involved vignetting, but I have also tried selecting all - the border -  twisting effect, etc. But I haven't been successful Can anyone help?
Thanks
PS Tried to upload photo but this is not allowed, apparently. I hope my query above will be sufficient (though it probably isnt - the picture tells the story, but I am not allowed to show you).

Hi Scott
Thank you for replying and I can see that you have got the effect on the sample photos, but I cannot replicate it!!
I have the mask (red) and have covered the edges of the mask with a large soft paintbrush, applied the lens effect. When I leave the quick mask I am left with a selected area (the brushed area). If I deselect this area the picture remains the same (no blurring at the edges). If I make a new layer then all I have is an edge in the shape of my brushed area and if I click off that new layer then the layer I had quick masked is missing the edge - just left with a jagged transparent area around the centre of the original photo.
I am not used to using masks - my knowledge of Photoshop is quite limited - so perhaps instructions going 1, 2, 3 would be better for an inexperienced person like myself.
The photo I am working on is a landscape with a building and is much more complicated than the sample I showed (and the one you worked on). Maybe I need to do a heavier blur/brushing???
Thanks

Haha, Scott! He's in the Illustrator forum and that's the advice you give!? Hehe . . . oy
Though I agree, doing that would get nice results, but then you have to vectorize and clean up anyway.
I suggest - stroked lines and Distort > Roughen with very subtle settings. Expand Appearance and then grab the Warp Tool (play with settings [Select the Warp Tool and press ENTER], probably using very little Simplify, if any) and finesse the lines around a bit. I call it "beating up your paths" - click like a madman, randomly, all over the paths to get 'em all random/natural looking.
I like the illustration style, hope you get it figured out.

what i personally recommend is for you to learn about using "lab" colour in photoshop....you can do exactly what that plugin does yourself by converting the image to lab first and playing with the a and b amongst others.
lab colour has to be one of the most unused, yet one of the best things inside the beast known as photoshop!
I learned this technique (amongst others) from a great graphic designer and team leader, Sam Blake:
    - one part is cutting out the silhouettes of the people.
    - create a duplicate of that layer, use guassian blur at 15pixels (depending on the size of your image...may be much lower...play around), then set the blending mode of this layer to "darker colour"....brings out some lines, etc
    - create a duplicate of the original layer, drag it to the top, use guassian blur at 15pixels (depending on the size of your image...may be much lower...play around)
use "exposure" and over expose the duplicate. set this layer to "overlay" and set the opacity to 40%
then lastly, just use a layer/folder mask to delete away the areas that you don't want affected by the effected! (lol) ...while keeping your original "clean" image as the base underneath all the other layers.
all the settings are approximations and work different for each image and image resolution. and its best if you have some form of stylus pen (ie: wacom tablet)
of course as with anything, there are thousands of ways of doing these effects. good luck and happy experimenting!

Thanks. For some reason it won't let me add a gradient. It can be another other color though.

  • How can I get this effect?

    Hello! Good day to all.
I was wondering if any of you experienced photoshop users can help me to learn how to get this effect.
Here is the "before edition" image:
And here is the "after edition" image:
I got this effect playing around with filters in my Adobe Elements, but now that my father bought Photoshop CS6 Extended, I took advantage and installed it on my laptop aswell. The problem is, I have no idea how to use most of it.
I've been learning some tricks on YouTube tutorials and courses, but I just can't find the way to get this one effect.
I'm very gratefull for you taking the time to reading this and helping me, and I wish you a great day.

Lots of ways to do that. After applying the Threshold adjustment, you could use Gaussian blur followed by levels and drag the black and white sliders toward the center like this:
    Or
You could use the Magic wand with Contiguous un-checked, and select the blacks.  Then use Refine Edge, and add some Smoothing, and wee bit of feather.  OK that and fill with black  (Alt/Opt backspace with black as your foreground colour)
Now invert the selection (Ctrl Shift i or Cmd Shift i) and fill with white.  You will loose fine detail acording to the settings you use in Refine edge - especiall the amount of Smoothing.
    Or
Copy the layer with Ctrl/Cmd j
Add a new background layer, and fill with white.
Select the blacks with the magic wand (remember to uncheck contiguous in the Options bar), and with the selection in place, add a layer mask.
Now completely fill the layer (not the layer mask) with black.
You can now adjust the effect with the Mask Properties panel.  If you can get it right with Feather you can make as many adjustments as you like to fine tune, but if you use Mask edge, you only get one go because it is destructive editing.

This looks like the final logo was created with several layers probably in Illustrator, then the file was most likely imported into After Effects and revealed by animating mask paths.

I found a post from Alope that told me exactly how to fix it.
    Go to:

Worked perfectly to stop the message that said, Not authorized to do that!

    Hi!
I have a series of QuickTime files that I am trying to
    present in a nice
interface. I know how I can create this effect in Flash- but
    given the
number of .movs I have, I am thinking of sticking to QT. The

I went through the source code and tried to replicate it by
    changing some of
the values but it does not seem to work. I thought about
    using frames to
ease complication but I find frames cumbersome. I am open to
    suggestions but
would prefer to keep the video clips in QT versus converting
    to FLV.
    Thank you.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    Welcome to the forum.
It will be difficult to compose this effect in FCE without commercial plugins like Nattress's Big Box of Tricks (G Glow dissolve).
But you can try this: create a colorized transparent document (yellow and red around the frame) in Photoshop. Save in PNG. Import into FCE.
Put it on V2, over the edit point for your video clips in V1.
Try to keyframe opacity values, animate the position with erratic displacements and add some twirling or distord effects (that can be keyframed too).
With some patience, I'm sure that you can achieve a such effect.

  • WHAT iS THIS EFFECT CALLED? OR HOW CAN I GET THIS EFFECT?

WHAT'S THIS EFFECT CALLED? OR HOW CAN I GET THIS EFFECT?
first of  all i don't know what's this kind of photo effect called, i just describe it as bright, clean and w/o lack of contrasts
secondly, i wanna learn how to achieve this effect.....really don't know how
    need help here....
btw i don't know where to post this post....so i just start from here  =)\

For my part you are welcome, Lisa.
then what about the color tone here? it's very pure and clean, a touch of blue i think, is it from the nature light or from photoshop effect?
The colour tone is (hopefully) a result of the nature of the natural light faithfully reproduced by the high quality of the camera (and film if relevant).
You will get quite different and sometimes rapidly changing tones of colour depending on the natural light; this is different for different times of day, different directions, different weather conditions.
Just to mention a few comparisons, the warm light from the setting sun is quite different from the cool light from the clear bright sky through a (high) window to the north at noon, and the light of the sun can be changed immensely by the huge white (or grey) filter sometimes applied to (parts of) the sky.
You may do many things in Photoshop, but photography is still an art form, not just cheating, at least for some.
I believe one of the real provings of cameras/films is the ability to reproduce the delicate but profoundly different tinges in snow on a clear day.

  • How to get this skin effect on a black model?

    hello everyone!!!
i was wondering if anyone knows how to get this final effect on a picture with a black model?

    1. Original image
    2. Convert to grayscale, then back to RGB
    3. Approximate color of sample
    4. Curves to add contrast
    Final.  Dodge selected quartertones
If desired, add a very, very slight noise. Not in image here. (Add'l layer: Gaussian, Mono, very low opacity)

  • The sound effects icon is staying on the screen. How do I get this to go away

The sound effects icon is staying on my ipad. How do I get this to go away?
    Thanks for the help.
Have A blessed and Wonderful Day!!!!!!!

If the sound icon is stuck on the screen, then the pad thinks you are pressing the volume rocker on the side of the pad.   Do you have a case or something that might be touching that rocker?
Some have reported that they have put a small dent in the pad body that presses the switch.  If so, you need to somehow indent it.
Try a reboot.  Press and hold both the home and sleep button until the apple logo appears.  Ignore the red slider.

How do I get this guitar sound? What effects is he using? Can I get it with Garage Bands sounds??

I'm no guitar expert my any means, but I'm pretty sure that's some sort of reverb pedal, along with using a whammy bar or bending the strings. Just add the reverb pedal to your amp set up, or adjust the reverb setting on the amp.

  • How do I get this look using Aperture 3

Any idea how I can get this look (contrast, colors …) using Apple Aperture? http://www.moniekaansorgh.nl/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/20120615_Jorieke_Christi aan_039.jpg

    Hi Kris,
Don't worry.  Your English is better than my Dutch!
You might want to look at taking some of the tutorials on Aperture offered at Lynda.com.  You can sign up for a month and take as much training as you want to brush up on your skills.
However, for now, you can reduce the colour in you rimages by reducing the saturation level.  If, however, you are happy with the flesh tones, but find the other colours too bright, us ethe Vibrancy slider to reduce all colours but the flesh tones.  Try playing with the mid-contrast slider to see if that works for you.  You can also try adjusting the black point to see if that makes a difference.
The good news is that Aperture is non-destructive in its editing, so you can go crazy trying all the adjustment settings to see what effect they have on your image without worrying about destroying your original photo.
So I would encourage you to try experimenting with the various adjustment options to learn what they do and by all means take somne training in the use of Aperture or buy a good book on the subject.
    Have fun!
    Cheers,
    Bob

  • How do i get a certain effect on my pic that is in 'Book' creation tool?

I have just started playing around with the 'Book' feature on iLife 09 and love one style of picture where it looks like loads of little polaroid pictures all stuck together to show the bigger picture. Know the one I mean? How can I get this effect on other pictures of my choosing as it is a cool way to have headline shots in things other than the Book, e.g. I'd like to do a newsletter or something. Ta.

no, although that would be nice as well. Shame I can't post the pic... hmmm, ok, imagine this - take a picture of scenery, print it out as an A4 pic, then cut it into 16 bits, all equal, and stick them back together again 'not quite' straight, so you can clearly see it is a montage of 16 little images that make up the bigger picture. The 'travel' Book has a few of these... end result is a lovely way of showing a picture... I can see it in iPhoto in the Book creation software, but can't find out how to do it! Help!
    Thanks.
