How do I get Viewer to be 4:3 aspect ratio?

Hi, I imported a 4:3 program into a new DVDSP file, but the viewer window is 16:9 and the picture is stretched. How can I make that window have 4:3 proportions? And is it OK to do it now, after the FCE file is already imported?

Press F3 Key to get screen to look like this and press outline tab [link to screen|http://dvdstepbystep.com/layofland.php]
Select the track in upper left blue section and in lower right purple section is the inspector. The general tab (first on left in insepctor) will have aspect ratio. Note this is assuming the movie was 4:3

Hi, my first post here, so please be kind.
I have used Photoshop 9 successfully for several years using a conventional 4:3 aspect ratio CRT monitor. I have just upgraded to a flat screen monitor which has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
I resized the Photoshop window to fill the new screen but transferring photographs from Adobe Bridge they were stretched horizontally.
This is the first time I have ever changed the format of my monitor and feel that somewhere in Photoshop there must be a feature which accommodates such a change; though I have spent serious time looking.
I can get the image to display properly by changing the Pixel aspect ratio, but I am certain that would result in saving a distorted image.
Please what do I need to do?

You're in luck, there's a pretty easy solution for this:
You must change your Windows desktop resolution to exactly match the "native" resolution of the new monitor, which is 1920 x 1080 in this case.
Usually you will be offered that choice automatically, but in some cases you'll need to "install" from a CD or downloaded information about the monitor.
There may also be some on-monitor controls you'll need to review to ensure it's showing the full 1920 pixels in width.
What version of Windows are you running, and what model of monitor is it, specifically?

How to convert HD 1080 to SD 486 pixel aspect ratio "IN" Shake ?

Hi,
I convert 1920X1080p master to 720X486P in Shake because i like the downscaling algorythm.
But when i put the exported file in Final Cut, it distorts the image to show correct aspect ratio, meaning Shake exported square pixels.
How can i convert 1920X1080p (square pixels) to 720X486p (CCIR601) DV pixel ratio directly IN Shake rather than allowing FCP to "distort" it to show correct image aspect ratio ?

I have found a simple workaround
Here's what i did in Shake:
I import the HD 1920X1080 square pixels clip.
I select HDTV1080 as exporting format in the "Global" tab.
I type 720X360 as export size in the Parameters 1 tab.
Render out...
In FCP, i import and reset the distort control to 0 in the clips motion tab.
ET VOILÀ. Everything has the correct aspect ratio without compensation distortion in FCP

How do you get view bindings to update a derived collection class?

I'm really lost here. In one sense I understand how bindings work, it's just that they never seem to work as I expect
In a pretty simple scenario, I have a table view displaying the contents of a derived set. This contents of this set is based on certain selections in the same view. If it helps to know, the items of the set are related to each other, and when one is selected the contents will change just to include the "direct relations".
Currently the view is showing the complete set, but when an item is selected, I can force console output showing the new filtered set, but the routine isn't being called automatically by the binding, and the view isn't altering (apart from the selection changing).
I've read the documentation over and over, and it seems that the solution is very convoluted and unnecessarily complex. So I can't help but think that I'm approaching it incorrectly.
I've read about using mutableSetValueForKey:, implementing collection accessor methods, and registering observers. But I'm simply wanting to connect a view object to a generated NSSet of strings in my single controller class. How hard can it be?
As I interpret the documentation, the option of registering as an observer involves calling methods and implementing methods. But we're talking about a view class in the NIB file, and I doubt I'm supposed to subclass that just to get it to update with changes.
Can someone point me in the right direction? I'm close to abandoning bindings and just sticking to the old fashioned table methods.

How can I import .mov footage with original pixel aspect ratio?

So the footage is 720x480 Square Pixels (1.0), 29.97 fps, progressive .mov but when I import it into Premiere Pro, they come up compressed as D1/DV NTSC (0.9091) automatically. When I try to Interpret Footage, it simply adds black bars. Why can't it just import correctly? When I preview the original footage, it plays back correctly but the preview inside Premiere Pro shows the distorted version... Please and thank you!!!

The suggestion about "new item" above was short. Here's the "full" version. In the Project Panel, go to the lower right corner ... click on the "New Item" Icon ... as shown here:
The first item on the pop-up menu that will appear should be "Sequence" ... click on it and just say ok at the next screen without even reading it. It's irrelevant, really.
Then going back to your project panel (we assume you've already imported your footage into it) click & drag a clip from the proj. panel to the timeline, or move one from the "Source monitor" to the timeline ... you should get a pop-up asking if you want the timeline changed to your footage, or your footage changed to the timeline. Take the timeline/sequence settings changed to match footage, and go.
That SHOULD take care of the problem in the vast majority of cases. It is such a simple fix, and so often the easiest and "correctist", that it's worth a try. Navigating the choices of setting up sequences is best left for those people who say, study GPU algorithms for a couple hours before going to bed for the sheer exhilaration of it ... unless, of course, PrPro actuall does a face-plant with your footage. But it mostly works good at it ... once you just let it ... so you might give that a try, takes what ... 20 seconds to see if it works?

How do I restore all images in a collection to original imported aspect ratio?

Typically I select all images in a catalog, resize the first image to 640x480. I then right click on the first image (all images are still selected) click on Develop Settings, Sync and choose to sync only the aspect ratio. All images are then cropped to 640x480 like the first image, which I then export to a folder.
I then need to restore all images to the original aspect ratio for building a slideshow to export to my website. I've followed the same procedure i.e. selected all images, click on the first image, change aspect to original, right click on first image and sync aspect ratio for all images.
The problem is that the rest of the images do not return to their original aspect ratio but revert to 4x6 aspect ratio instead of the original size when imported. I've changed the lock to unlocked and tried both but still no result. Now I have to select each image individually, open the crop dialog and choose custom to get it back to the imported aspect ratio.
How do I batch restore all images in a collection to the aspect ratio when imported?

Rotating an image is adjusting its crop rotation and crop size. You originally said you wanted things back to import state which presumably was full resolution w/o any adjustments to ratio, size, or rotation. If you are wanting to do things in the middle of your other processing I'm less sure what to tell you.
Taking a crop that you have at 3:2 and setting it to 4:3 shrinks in the longer sides, and resetting the ratio to 3:2 shrinks down the shorter top and bottom--this is how it always works, because a crop box is not ever expanded by setting the ratio to something different, and changing the ratio back and forth like that makes the crop-box smaller and smaller.
Are you having an issue because you want to fiddle with the crop in the middle of other processing every time, or is this a special case because you've moved on in your processing after asking your question some time ago?
If you routinely need to do this, an easier way might be to export the images at the 3:2 crop, then reimport those JPGs, change the crop on those JPGs, only, then re-export them a second time, and be done with them. This sounds like you're making proofs?
If you are making proof-sized images at a different ratio? Why not just export the 3:2 images at a smallish size, perhaps with a watermark and not have to worry about making them 4:3 ratio?
Another alternative would be to print the images to JPGs instead of a printer, and set the paper size to a 4:3 ratio and turn on the Fill option--which will chop of the long sides automatically as it prints them.

You can't. The TV device plays content at the encoded aspect ratio. It is up to your viewing device to alter the display aspect if it can. Your primary options are to use a different viewing device capable of multiple aspect ratios, scaling, and/or zoom effects or you could simply letterbox your content when you encode it.

How to crop canvas and change aspect ratio?

I'm working on a project shot with an old camera from the 70s. I used that camera but recorded the signal on my mini dv camera. Now I have a black border on the right side of the image.
This project is going on the Web, not TV. How can I crop the canvas (and change the aspect ratio) without a black border? I know there's a crop feature in the motion tab, but that results in same aspect ratio with black border. Is this possible?
(I don't care if the aspect ratio is non-standard, and I don't want to letterbox.)

If you are going to the web (what means you'll downscale at the end) and you shoot using an old camera, the loss of quality of the upscaling probably means nothing in your final web encoding.
You can make a test upscaling just some seconds of your movie an encoding it for the web to check the final quality.

How can I edit DVCPROHD in FCPX? Need to Adjust Aspect Ratio

I have 5TB of footage for a sitcom I'm about to start editing. It's all been ingested and organized in FCPX event browser. However, it appears the FCPX won't allow the change of aspect ratio for the 1280x1080 footage. The DVCPROHD footage appears squished. I need to make MultiCams out of all the scenes shot film style and need to be able to view it at a correct aspect ratio not only in the timeline, but in the Event browser playback as well - so I can make informed decisions on which takes to use in the edit. I've seen recommendations for people creating "custom resolution" timesline by ingesting a pre-made video clip that's been customized in motion, but that wont' fix my problem. There has to be a way to natively edit DVCPROHD footage. Can some please help with suggestions??

Not by using the IMAQ WindTools directly. One idea is to draw a rectangled ROI first (using ), then modify it programmatically using the IMAQ ROI functions ...

Once the menus are back, you can use the View menu, then select Toolbars and click on the names of the toolbars to toggle displaying them.
