How do I get windows 8 to see airport extreme

I have a mixed network at home with 2 macs and 2 windows 8 PC's. I am trying to set up backup disks. I have one disk that I use for time capsules, and another disk entirely that I want to use for the PC backups. I can connect both to the airport extreme using a USB hub. the time capsule works fine. I formatted the Win8 backup disk to FAT (NTFA and ExFAT being the only other options offered by DiskUtility) and copied files over to it by direct connection to the Win8 (so I know that Win8 can access the disk). When I attach the FAT disk to the time capsule, Airport utility can see the disk. When I go back to Win8, and select network places, nothing shows up. I know the computer can access the Airport, since I have internet access through it, but there are no network connections shown.
I assume my problem is in getting the Win8 and airport (and other Mac components for that matter) onto the same network, but am clueless as to how to do it.

You are formatting the disk wrongly.
Disk Utility might be able to format the disk NTFS or ExFat but the AE cannot read them. It only reads FAT32 (not suitable for large disks) and HFS+ ie Mac OS extend journaled.
Please format your disk for the windows computer exactly the same as your mac one.. ie HFS+.
Remember this is network.. network access to a hard disk is based on network protocols, NOT DISK FORMAT.
So windows can write and read to HFS+ disks perfectly well as long as it is on a network that provides SMB (standard windows network protocol).
To the windows computer the disk will appear NT server format.. and you may still have large file problems. That is purely a windows issue. So make sure files are no larger than 4GB.
Mounting the disk in windows, you simply type the address of the AE into the windows explorer. If you have issues it does help to have the airport utility for windows loaded. This loads bonjour for windows which helps windows discover Apple network resources.

  • Windows XP cannot see Airport Extreme SSID

I just bought a new Airport Extreme Base Station and connected it to my home router. My iMc was connected in minutes. But I am having a lot of trouble connecting my wife's Dell PC (XP SP2) using a Dell 1450 Wireless USB adapter (a/b/g). I have tried no encryption, WEP, and WPA, but in all cases I cannot even see the broadcasted SSID from the base station. I have also tried a number of different channels 1,6,8,11, but in all cases I never see the station in the list of available wireless networks.
To see if this was a windows issue, I brought home my work laptop (also XP SP2), and it had no problem seeing the SSID, and also connecting in all the above cases. Whats even more perplexing is that all the computers are right next to each other, and my wife's computer can see about 10 of meighbor's access points, but not the new base station!
Needless to say, it has been very frustrating, and I am considering returning the airport if I can't get the wife's XP connected.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mark

I can see a couple of possibilities.
    * It is possible to set up AirPort (or any wireless network) so that the SSID doesn't show up - ever. In such cases, it's necessary to manually type in the SSID to connect. (Usually, it's only the first time - most devices can remember the SSID name, and it's not a problem). Unfortunately for you, I don't use Wintendo that much, and don't have the steps needed to connect to a hidden network memorized - I'm actually more familiar with the process to do it with an Xbox than I am with a Windows PC.
    * To see if this is the case, use the AirPort utility, manual config. Find the "Wireless" tab, and then choose "wireless options" There should be a checkbox named "create a closed network" If it is checked, then the SSID is in fact hidden, and that's why you aren't finding the SSID.
I realize that you were able to see the SSID from another machine, and that is puzzling that your wife's PC can't see it.
You've already eliminated the possibility that the radio is simply turned off on your wife's PC, as you can see your neighbor's wireless SSID(s).
I'd suggest trying a different encryption, as some older devices can't use the newer methods - but you've covered that base too.
To be honest, I've got a couple of issues of my own with the 802.11n base station... the latest firmware 'update' seems to have been a step backwards...

  • How do I get the TC on my Airport Extreme to do wireless backups?

I just want to use the TC for wireless backup.   I've connected it to the Airport with Ethernet; unconnected the EThernet; opened Airport Utility; read the Manual; studied all these posts.  Nada.  It should be simple, I only need the TC to act like an external HD on the network.  Any suggestions??
    Twila Johnson

Let's go with simple for now and get things working.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable for now, and power down the TC by pulling the power cord
    Wait a minute
Hold in the reset button on the back of the TC and keep holding for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power cord back in to the TC  (tricky to do...because you almost need 3 hands)
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow 25-30 seconds for the TC to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the TC
Open AirPort Utility, select the TC, and click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab below the row of icons to assign a name to your Time Capsule, a device password (write that down) and adjust Time Zone settings.
Click the Wireless tab next to the Time Capsule tab
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to "Off"
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using= Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update and allow 25-30 seconds for the TC to restart. You should have a green light.
Power off the entire network now....all devices.....power down order is not important
    Wait a minute
Start the modem first and let it run a minute by itself
Start the AirPort Extreme the same way
Start the TC the same way
Start other devices one at a time the same way
    You should be all set

  • Airport Utility does not see Airport Extreme Base Station

Purchased Airport Extreme yesterday at Apple Store to replace old Netgear Router. Wanted wireless network to work with 2 identical HP Laptops running XP with SP3 and 2 iPod touches, and possible future purchases of iPad 2 and Apple TV. Installed Airport Utility software from CD on Dell Studio running Windows 7. Connected Airport Extreme to cable modem and Dell Studio. Ran Airport Utility software to configure Base Station but it did not recognize the Base Station. Base Station had blinking amber light. Did have internet connectivity on Dell Studio, and wireless internet connectivity on 2 iPod touches, and on one HP Laptop. No wireless internet on other HP Laptop. But wireless internet connection was unsecured and Airport Utility did not see Airport Extreme so could not configure it to make it secure. Contacted Apple Customer support. After 30-40 minutes of attempting several different possible fixes only able to use Airport Utility to configure Airport Extreme remotely, wirelessly, from one HP Laptop, not the Dell Studio that is directly connected to the base station. Now that the base station is configured the network is secure. However, second HP Laptop cannot connect to primary wireless network. I created password protected "Guest" network using Airport Utility, and laptop is able to connect to this Guest network. From reviewing forums am now able to configure Airport Extreme with Airport Utility by using "Configure other" on Dell computer. But utility cannot find device by scanning. Would like to find way to (1) have Airport Utility on Windows 7 Dell see Airport Extreme by scanning and not using "configure other," and (2) have 2nd HP Laptop connect to primary network and not "guest' network. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Bob - Thanks so much for your quick reply. I followed your suggestions and, to go into perhaps unnecessary detail, I'll write what I did. I completely disconnected the Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) from my computer. I disabled Windows Firewall, uninstalled my anti-virus program, and uninstalled Airport Utility and Bonjour, recycled by cable modem (took out the battery and unplugged it for about 20 seconds), then restarted my computer. After the computer booted up, I verified that windows firewall was disabled, reinstalled Airport Utility and Bonjour, then reconnected the cable connecting the AEBS to the computer (to one of the three ethernet ports, and I tried each of them in case one was faulty) but not to the cable modem as my firewall was disabled and had no anti-virus software. I also reconnected the AEBS power chord. I opened the newly reinstalled Airport Utility software and it did not find the base station. Only when I used "configure other" was I able to access the AEBS. I recycled the modem again, but that did not help. I turned on the firewall, installed anti-virus software, connected the AEBS to the modem, the light turned green, and I was able to access the internet on the primary computer and the wireless network gave me internet access on my laptops. But I was still not able to have my main computer, the one directly connected to the AEBS able to see it, and configure it, without utilizing "configure other."
Also, any idea why one of my laptops can only access the "guest" network? When it attempts to connect to the primary network it will stay on "acquiring network address" for what seems a few minutes, then switch to the "guest" network and connect immediately.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can't get onto internet through my airport extreme!!!

My airport extreme is connected to my network wirelessly. When I open the airport utility it sees the base station and I have it set up for the network. There is a green light on the base station, all seems well.
Except when I connect my laptop to the base station through an ethernet I can't get onto the internet.
When I do the network check there is a green light on the ethernet but for the network there is an amber light.
When I go into the system profiler and check the advance settings for the ethernet using the DHCP this is what I get.
    IP: 169.254.192.90
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
    Router: nothing
When I connect to my wireless network on my lap top I get.
    IP: 192.168.2.8
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 192.168.2.1
I will admit I am no genius when it comes to computers or the internet. How do I get the **** internet through my airport extreme?
Oh, and how do I find out the DHCP Client ID?

    IP: 169.254.192.90
IP addresses in the 169.254.x.x range are know as "Self-Assigned" IP addresses. They typically arise when your computer, configured as a DHCP client, is unable to find or negotiate with a DHCP server.
The fact that you computer can find the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) DHCP server wirelessly but not by Ethernet may be one of the following reasons:
o The Ethernet cable or cable connectors are bad.
o The Ethernet port on either the computer or the AEBSn is faulty.
o The Ethernet port on the computer is not configured properly.
Assuming the fault is the last item above, let's double-check your Mac's Ethernet settings.
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
o Verify that a Built-in Ethernet option exists. If it does not, click "+" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create a Built-in Ethernet configuration, the Ethernet card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
o Verify that Built-in Ethernet is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
    Advanced > TCP/IP tab
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
o Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Advanced > DNS tab
o Verify that your ISP's DNS server(s) appear.
    Advanced > Proxies tab
    o Configure Proxies: Manually
o Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
    o Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
o Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
o Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)
    Ethernet tab
    o Configure: Automatically
Oh, and how do I find out the DHCP Client ID?
You would create the DHCP Client ID by entering a value in this field in System Preferences. (ref: System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP > DHCP Client ID)

None of the normal mechanisms of setting an application to be the DEFAULT application for the .HTML file type seem to work...

  • How do i get Windows 2000 off the VPC 5 disc to install with VP 7

VPC 5 With windows 2000 upgraded to VPC 6 ran great. But hey I thought lets upgrade so I bought VPC 7 Stand-alone, installed XP PRO and it is soooooo
Sloooow. I want to get Windows 2000 off the VPC 5 disc to install on VPC 7 to see if there is a difference. Yeah we got 1.5 gigs of Ram and a Dual processor
Machine. Maybe something else is going on but I cant figure what. So How do I get Windows 2000 off that VPC 5 disc???

Yep tried that. No go but thanks.
Some of the previous versions of the VPC CDs
(unfortunately, I can't remember which) were hybrids
and doubled as not only the VPC for Mac installer CD
but also the Windows OS installer CD. You might try
creating a new virtual PC and then when asked for a
Windows installer disk, insert and capture your VPC 5
disk. I have no idea if this will work for you.
Later versions of VPC came with the Windows OS
pre-installed on VPC disk images and not with a
Windows installer. If your version has a disk image,
copy it from your version 5.0 CD and try opening that
in VPC 7.0. You should see a conversion process.
    Hope this helps! bill

    2. Running Lenovo Think Vantage Tool Box and it sees the Intel SSDMAEMC080G2 drive...
The question I have is that windows does not see this as a drive from my computer..ect.  My question is how to I get Win 7 to see this drive so I can move my win 7 to it and set as a the boot drive.
What step am I missing???  Thanks everyone for your help!!!
    Chris

    Hi, guys
If you whant to use the msata drive as the 2nd drive in the system you've to initialize it.
For making it bootable the are seveal methods. I've used the next two:
    1. I used Intel Data Migration Software tool (based on Acronis technology) to transfer all image from the stock hdd to the new Intel SSD drive 320 Series (120 gb). At this moment the new drive was plased into the external usb box. Then I've booted from the new drive and resized the partitions using the Disk Management applet.
    2. The second method is to use the factory recovery media (USB stick in my case). I did that for the new msata SSD drive (non Intel 128 gb). Insert the new drive, boot from the usb stick, fully recover, reboot into the bios setup, change the boot priority for the new drive, reboot from the new drive, resize the partitions and delete the Lenovo_recovery partition on the new drive. I'm sure the cloning tool will work for msata too.
No actions were carried out with the SSD drives (I mean initializing, partioning...) before data migrating in both cases.

Good heavens. There is no way that any Windows emulation software is going to make that software usable for you. Why not buy iLife '06 and use iMovie HD? That is only $80 verses $450 for the Sony software. Unless of course the Sony software has features that iMovie HD doesn't. There is also Final Cut Express HD that is less expensive that the offering from Sony.
You can order Virtual PC from the Apple Store online or just about any store that sells computer software.
