How do i give _spotlight access to home directory?

I have added a folder inside a homefolder and now it is not found in spotlight and i checked the folder permission and _spotlight is not listed and i cannot add it.

There should be an inherited ACL entry for spotlight on the home directory itself in fact that provides it to everything "down" from there. Without fixing that first you'll get the same thing on the next folder you make.

• Lack Permission to access Network Home Directory

I upgraded OSX 10.4.8 Server to 10.4.9. I also updated the client computers to the same. The server is a Master LDAP directory which houses the users home directories. Since the upgrade when a user tried to login to their home directory they receive a dialog telling them they do not have the permissions to access the directory. They can go to any other machine in the shop and login with no problem. I have found two ways to remedy this. If we shut the affected computer down and pull the plug, when it is restarted they can login. This seems to work 80% of the time. The second remedy has been to remove the apple preferences on the client from "/Library/Preferences", "/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration", and "/Library/ Preferences/DirectoryService". Restart the machine, re-enter all of the required info, and we are off and running again. I have not been able to pin this down to a single file. I had one user that I have hit this problem with that nothing has worked.
Before upgrading the server I backed up 10.4.8 to another internal drive. I have since returned to running off of 10.4.8 but the problem has not gone away. I have checked and double checked permissions on home directories and do not see anything wrong.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Changing the schema password is not the same as changing the password for the portal30 user logging on through the browser. If you wanted to change the schema password, then you also need to update the password in the DAD configuration file, which is in $IAS_HOME/Apache/modplsql/cfg/wdbsvr.app. Update the password entry for the corresponding data access descriptor (DAD).
If your intent was to change the password for the lightweight user named portal30, then you'll first need to change back the portal30 schema password - just do it through sqlplus.
The change the password of the lightweight user by logging in as portal30 and then change password from Account Info.

• How to migrate network users to new home directory

Want to migrate network user accounts from current directories on an internal drives on a Mac Pro to a newly connected XRAID box.
Before the XRAID was attached, network users were able to use their home directories to log into the system, but space was limited and we had them use Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices to store their data and media files. The XRAID now provides 7TB or protected storage and we'd like to move their accounts to the arrays in the XRAID box.
Have not been able to find details on how best to handle this. Don't know if the current info needs to be exported, user ID's delete/recreated - or modified to point to new home directories, and then imported, etc. I have most of the Apple 10.6 Server manuals, but have not run across info for this type of change/migration.
Thanks for any leads to this information, or how-to's.

Did some trials with some bogus users I set up on the original share device.
Did the unshare as mentioned. Created new share directory on the Xraid. Ran CP to copy users in the old share directory to the new. Shared the new Xraid directory and set auto-mount.
While the share directories were on two completely separate volumes and their paths were fine. Workgroup Manager shows the shares by servername/sharename. So I now had sharename and sharename-1 showing up in WM. The old share directory had been Unshared, but as long as any users in WM point to the old directory - it shows up on the list.
Seeing this, I deleted the newly copied users and deleted the Xraid share directory. Then created newsharename on the Xraid, ran the CP to this new name. Used WM to change the Home directory for each user. User logon failed because the path names had changed. Deleted the new users and the new Xraid directory and retried first method with same sharename and resulting sharename-1 in WM.
Updated the user's home directories to sharename-1 in WM. Once all were changed, the old sharename dropped out of the WM list, but I was left with the sharename-1. User Logon was spotty - some were OK, others had issues, some earlier OK logons failed later. Was not rock solid.
Before I move any real user accounts and all their data, need to be certain there will be no issues. This naming issue of the share appears to be the bug in the process. Ideas to overcome this naming issue?
What I didn't try (thought of later, after testing) was to unshare the sharename-1 and go back and select the sharename again. Thinking is the "-1" due to the duplicate should not be an issue. But now the Home Directory info will have the "-1" - this caused Logon issues. Possibly WM will show these as sharename-1 as old Home location and allow me to select plain sharename and all be settled.
No where near the clean process I thought Apple Server would provide for moving user Home and Data.
Open to any and all ideas. Thx!

• Give up on Portable Home Directory?

I'm wondering if anyone is actually having success with Portable Home Directory functionality in Leopard. I have mostly all Intel Macs... 3 iMacs, MacBook Pro, 2 MacPros... and 3 PPC G5's. The server is one of the PPC G5's. The server and all clients are 10.5.3.
I've just had no luck over the course of this week getting PHD to function as advertised. It seems simple enough... and everything appears to go off without a hitch until you actually attempt to go mobile. Even then, on the surface it seems to be working then you quickly realize that it's not actually syncing. It only successfully syncs when the local home directory is initially created (first user login). After that, any changes you make go to the server... but they don't come down when you move to another computer.
I have everything set as explained in the manual and on this forum. What I want is everything in the user folder to sync at login, once an hour while logged in, and at logout. What I'm getting is no sync at login, upsync everyhour, and upsync at logout. I just don't get it. The server home essentially has the correct combination of what is created on each computer... but each computer only has what was created/modified on that computer.
I just recently attempted to delete the .filesync folders in both local and server user folder root... and nothing changed except that now it upsyncs EVERYTHING every time at log out.
The client machines are obviously correctly bound as all the server managed preferences seem to be honored. As far as mobility, I've tried setting this individually for each user, and also on a group... and the only thing that works either way is the initial home folder creation and upsyncs at logout. It doesn't even try at login.
If anyone has achieved any success, I would love an account of the steps taken and the order performed. I'm at the point now where I'm ready to backup the user information and delete all user accounts and homes and start over. Really exhausting trying to figure this out.

Well I've found some consistency in the dysfunction, but I don't understand it. Still no sync at login, even if I turn off management server side and set it user side. It does sync at logout, although it has stopped re-upsyncing everything all over again each time (don't know why that suddenly stopped, but I'm glad it did).
So here's the test. Logout of users normal computer, it syncs on logout. Go to another computer with a scansnap... Login, no sync, do a manual sync... it goes thru the motions... checking, but doesn't actually sync anything. Scan document, logout, it syncs. Go back to normal computer, login... no sync, do a manual sync... goes thru the motions... checking, doesn't sync (scanned document still not there). Check home folder on server, scanned document is, in fact, there. Logout, it syncs and actually does something. Immediately log back in, no sync, but document is there.
So the consistency is that the home folder sync workflow seems to be working. However, for some reason, it won't sync at login or manually while logged in. I'm at a loss.

• How do I find where the Apache home directory is?

I am working with a server on which someone else installed Apache. In fact, they have both Apache 1.3 and Apache 2.0 on it. Only Apache 2.0 is active. I don't know what they used to install it or where Apache came from. The people who installed it cannot be reached.
How do I find out which directory is Apache_home?
At first I tried looking for files and directory names that I thought would show up in the Apache_home directory tree:
Tried 'locate apache' in root, and got dozens of directories or files with the word "apache" in them.
Tried 'locate httpd.conf', and got two listings (etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and usr/lib/opcenter/fastcgi/httpd.conf). One might be for each of the Apache versions?.. but which is which?? Are either of them under the "apache_home" directory??
Tried 'locate libexec' (one of the directories Im need to find) and got user/libexec and user/local/libexec.
Is there a configuration file or something that has a statement like "$Apache2.0_home=XXX/XXX/XX" that would tell me where it is??
Thanks in advance.

No, Apache _home is a sort of the base directory for
the apache installation. According to some literature I read today, this directory should've been /usr/local/apache/bin/, but that's not where I found my apache install (cygwin, I let the installer handle all the defaults).
Mine was under /usr/sbin/, and to be correct I was looking for the httpd.exe (cygwin specific) file.
I'd suggest running a find / -name (file you are looking for) to locate your resources.

• I have to give password to file changes in my home directory

From yesterday, when I try to change files in my home directory, a dialog box pops up to ask the password.
That happens even after make the file permission to 644. I tried to change the whole /Users/myplace permisson, but it doesn't work.
The owner of the file is set as myself, but there might be something broken with this.
This actually made everything not working, dropbox takes for ever to delete a file, evernote can't even start and on and on.
I just happen to add New Person with the same user name that I use now in Sharing, but I'm not sure this is the cause of the problem.
How can I solve this issue? How can I delete/move files in home directory without giving passwords?
Thanks,
smcho

Your username is "smcho"? So your home folder is named "smcho"?
Yeah for the System Folders "Movies", "Music", "Pictures", "Library", "Public" and "Desktop" there is an ACL, so you can't rename or delte them.
It's just for your safety because these folders are used by the system and should be not renamed or removed!
Additionally you made something wrong by chmodding your home folder to 644 - or as it showing here to 730!?!
Normally the user home folder and the included folders should be at 700 and the Public folder at 755. Additionally the folders have an acl for "everyone deny delete". so something get messed up!

• Home directory for my documents

Hello,
I am writing an international program which reads in files placed under the "My Documents" directory of the users home directory.
I can get access to the homedirectory using System.getProperty("user.home"). But depending on the language, the "My Documents" is having a different name.
Is there a property that gives direct access to this directory?

Hello,
I suppose it is too late for helping nnv14vv but can help others.
* Constructs a
JFileChooser
pointing to the user's
* default directory. This default depends on the operating system.
* It is typically the "My Documents" folder on Windows, and the
* user's home directory on Unix.
public JFileChooser() {
this((File) null, (FileSystemView) null);
So you can get "My Documents" path using:
new JFileChooser().getCurrentDirectory();
I am sure that must be another way to get it without using JFileChooser() but haven't found it.

• Please help with Home Directory and changing drive location

Hi there.
I read some tutorials on moving the home folder to another drive (all went fine), but there are some things I don't quite understand.
I did a fresh Lion install (from SnowLeopard) and decided only to migrate my user data, but no folder data, so every folder in my home directory was completely empty (desktop, movies etc). When I first tried to move my home directory to a new Hard Drive I wrongly assumed that since all those folders were empty I didn't need to copy the home folder manually, just change the location. But when I restarted the computer everything was gone. So I followed the instructions more carefully the next time and manually copied my home folder over to the other HD first (even though every folder contained in the home dir says no data), and that is when I noticed it was copying 26gb of data. So where is this data stored, and what is it? Obviously it's important as on my Mac all my user data was gone, but aren't my settings and mail etc in my Library?
There seems to be no "show hidden data" etc for my Home dir. So there must be somethign about the Home directory (in the users folder) that I don't quite understand?
I have 26gb of data hiding somewhere (when I do 'get info' on the home directory in the user folder, it says 26gb used, but all my folders are empty) and it would be handy to know what this is and the best way to manage it for future backups.
also - can I now completely delete the old home Dir from my System (SSD) drive since it's all on my other HD? All the folders are empty, but it still shows 26gb!
thanks for your help
Joel

Hi Ari,
Welcome to discussions!
Unable to access your home directory... In what way? Via FTP? If so, how about deleting the file you made:
cd /etc
sudo rm ./ftpchroot
Or do you mean something else?

• Stop sharing home directory

Hi,
my intention is to share a folderA to a windows 7 computer, only this folder. I've created a standard userA in mac and I've enabled it to share files with smb and then I've removed it's public folder and added the folderA that I want to share. I can access this user from the windows box without problems and I can read and write to the folderA without problems but it also shares the folder userA, ie, it's home directory with it's desktop, documents, images, etc inside that I don't won't to see. How can I stop sharing it's home directory if the home directory is not listed in the Shared Folders list????.

You may have to revert to a more standard method of sharing
items in a Public folder, between a Mac & PC or Mac to Mac.
Then there would be no user's Home directory involved.
The way you appear to have it now, some of the intended
security measures of the OS X could be easily exploited.
Hopefully someone with more +inside information+ will reply.
Good luck & happy computing!

• Home directory on Windows clients

Hi all,
I have recently changed the share point location of our home directories from /Home to /home/users.
The change was very easy and went smoothly except for our Windows users.
After moving to the new share point they lost all their data under H:
I noticed that the SMB server still goes to the old /Home directory instead of the afp:/Home (which is mapped to /home/users now).
How do I tell the SMB server were to look for the home directories?
Thanks,

Hi
Is it possible a user to login on a mac, and access their home directory that is stored on a windows server via active directory?
Yes. Provided the AD Server has been configured to accommodate mac clients first:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7417304&#7417304
Can the mac server mount the active dir. share and allow it to be accessed on mac clients?
If the AD Server controls the directory/volume/drive etc for home folder creation then why involve another server?
Also, if this is possible, how would I set up managed preferences for these users?
To manage mac clients using something similar to GPOs available on AD you would need OSX Server. It does not have to be an XServe. Any mac that meets Leopard Server's minimum qualifying spec will do. This is what is I would refer to as AD-OD Integration. Quite a few on this forum call it the 'Magic Triangle'. Its difficult to advise any further on this as a lot depends on what your requirements are and ultimately the AD environment you wish to integrate.
These links should provide more information:
