How do I go about hosting an iWeb site on my own domain?

I have never "posted" or tried to post anywhere on Web before. Forgive me if I don't follow a protocol that I should.
I just published an update of a site. The original site I can't change by myself. I made the new one on iweb thinking it would go to www.capellidanglifoundation.org - instead it is found at this unwieldy place: http://web.mac.com/marciareidmarsted/CapellidAngeli_FoundationSite/Welcome.html -
I did make a Netscape site in 2001 which is now at http://www.aboutmyhair.net, but someone else did the uploading for me.
how do I post to my own domain?
I have made another updated site. It is ready to upload to www.marciareidmarsted.com - and I don't want it to go to another long address.
I thought they had fixed it at the apple store at West Farms Mall, but I guess not.
Thanks for any help you can give - I did see someone with the same problem, so it is probably not that unusual.

If you want to put your site on a server other than .Mac, here are some tips:

If you want to use .Mac to host your site but have your personal domain name point to it, the basic info is here:

Which approach do you want to use?

  • Multipul iweb sites   problem with own domain name

    hello all
i have currently 2 iweb sites (my own personal one with my own personal domain) and another site which has a podcast for my self and flat mates
    the problem comes in this.
if i want to subscribe the podcast to itunes it trys to send it as www.garethmob.co.uk/flat6_band ect where the actuall band website does not sit on my own personal website
is there any way i can fix this by having the origional web.me.com/garethmob ect for one of the websites and the garethmob.co.uk for the other?
both are on my mobile me account
thanks for any help in advance
    Gareth

If you have more than on site on your iDisk and go to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites, you will see that you have two website folders but only one index.html file.
If the domain name www.garethmob.co.uk (Site 1) is directed at that index.html file then that's the one that must exist in the Web/Sites folder.
When you upload another site (Site 2), its index.html file overwrites the existing one and the URL is then directed to the wrong site.
When you upload changes to the site with the MobileMe URL (Site 2), you must then upload a copy of the index.html file for the other site (Site 1) after doing this.
You can do this by publishing your Site 1 to a local folder and then put the index.html file inside a folder and trash the rest.
After you have uploaded changes to Site 2, go to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites and upload a copy of the index.html file for Site 1 by drag and drop.

  • When icloud replaces mobile me, will it stop hosting all iweb sites.

When icloud replaces mobile me, will it stop hosting all iweb sites.
If so, what are the millions of iweb users meant to do.
From the notes I have seen, kindlyt sent out by apple, we need to buy Domain space on servers now.
    Are there any better ways?
I really hope apple can update iweb, as its an amazing apple app, and if they do it may make the pain fo having to live without mobiel me hosting a bit easier!

It is now is apparent that iWeb, and iDVD, will no longer be supported by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.  iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ RSS Feed Widget
All of these issues can be replaced with 3rd party options.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
I would imagine that iWeb and iDVD will be dropped from future boxed versions of iLife if there are boxed versions. However, there may be some copies of the boxed iLife 11 still on the shelves that would include iWeb and iDVD.  Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.

  • Hosting your iWeb site with a third party

Where is the best place to host my iWeb site so that I can get it indexed by the various search engines? Apparently, .Mac blocks spiders and therefore I cannot get my site to come in search results. Obviously, my primary goal is to have my site prominent on google. I would like to find a host that would submit my sites for me if possible. Thanks.

.Mac doesn't block spiders. You have to get rid of the iWeb standard navigation and build your own.
Create a sitemap and upload it to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites.
The URL for your sitemap is ...
    http://web.mac.com/username/sitemap.xml
... and the URL you submit to Google is ...
    http://web.mac.com/username/
Rage Sitemap Automator will create the map, upload it and enter it into the four major search engines..

A more basic, and cheaper, version is iMap...

  • Hosting Your iWeb Site From Your Mac

If you don't have a .Mac account or you don't want to pay a monthly fee to host your new website you created with iWeb, you can use OS X's built-in Apache Web server. To accomplish this, follow the steps in the link below.

I was able to get this to work, using the same configuration you mention. The way I did it was to set up the IP address on my LAN using fixed static addresses, and to have the router "forward" the http packets to the Mac running Apache. In Network system preferences panel, you also need to set the DNS servers address to the address of the router on the LAN. In order to reduce hackers trying to break in, I don't use the standard port 80 for my address, but use some other 4-digit port (e.g., 8182), so my website address ends up looking like www.whatever:8182. Instead of "no-IP.com" I used the free dynamic name service from http://www.dyndns.com/. I also put the web content on a firewire disk, which requires a little editing of the httpd.conf file. This was another security precaution. Anyhow, its been working great -- not a single problem. Also, Weblock is great shareware that lets you assign login IDs on the web folders.

  • Hosting an IWeb site... and Other Q's

    Hey all!
I'm about to start a small business in my town and i've played around with iweb before, and like many of the things you can do with it. I have a couple questions that i hope you guys can help me with...
    1) * Biggest one - Does I web allow you to create a shopping cart and purchasing system for a buyer?
    If So:
What is a good host to use so that i can create my own domain name?
How compatible is this host with mac's?
I found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SB86uG3HmQk downloaded it and it seems pretty easy. Does anyone have any input on how good it is?
    If Not:
Can i still use iweb to build a site like this then integrate this part in when i find a good host?
In your opinion what is the best host to use when waiting to build a site that is retail focused.
    - I haven't been on here in a while, when did everything from .mac switch to mobile me? How is this working for those who use it regularly?
Lastly - My .Mac or Mobile me account is going to run out in 5 days will i loose access to this site and my email once it does?
    Thank you!!

For more on E commerce have a look here...
    http://iwebfaq.org/site/iWebBusinesssolutions.html
You will have to renew to keep your website published and your MobileMe email address.
MobileMe is not the best solution for publishing. Have a look at ...
    http://iwebfaq.org/site/iWebFolderFTP.html
The author uses Host Excellence for hosting - me too.
Host Excellence has E commerce available as well as offering web mail and scripts to have feedback forms etc. Form mail will be pretty essential for your website and this cannot be done with MobileMe with out using, and paying for, an external service.
You will have better performance and reliability with a good web hosting service and they all offer tech support.
Publishing to a folder and uploading may seem like a lot of extra work but, if you use the best applications, you will find it easy and it also gives you the opportunity to optimize your files. This is essential for any commercial web site as people aren't going to wait for your pages to download.

  • How can I change a hyperlink in iweb site?

In my iweb site I have a hyperlink to an external page.  I now want to change that link, and have it link to one of my internal pages.  I changed the link in iweb, republished the files, uploaded them to my host site, but the link still goes to the original external page.  How can I fix this?

Select the text or item that is the hyperlink and bring up the Inspector/Link/Hyperlink pane:
Select One of My Pages from the Link To: menu and select the page you want to link to.

  • Hosting My Iweb-site

I'm a newbie, so please forgive me. I'm attempting to publish some pages with informational stuff, hopefully to gain some click-revenue from running ads. I've found that my pages run fairly slow uploading to my visitors. I've been thinking about hosting my site somewhere else than .mac. Does anyone have a suggestions on how and where would be a good place to host from? or any suggestions on how to speed the upload of my pages up? I do not know much about hosting else where or really publishing much at all any help would be great.

You can see from the basic Host Excellence plan that you can run 6 domains and up to 300 sub domains within them for about $7 per month.
The good thing about HE is their tech support. If you get stuck they will either tell you how to fix it or do it for you if you ask them? I have never had to wait more than 12 hours for support to get back to me.

  • Hosting your IWeb site

    Hi,
I want to change my local IWeb site and upload it to a server host....(For example: "http://www.machighway.com") Will I be able to upload files just as they are locally and drop them unto the server? Otherwise, who offers the most affordable monthly plans for hosting an IWeb Site

What's affordable depends on how much you want to spend and where you live.
Here's one for starters. Its free and if you like it you can pay for it and get a free domainname :
    www.000webhost.com
I use several of these webhosts, besides MobileMe.
Or do your own webhosting. Either on your own computer or on an external one.
Since I was in need of backup anyway I bought a Synology DS211 NAS with two 3TB Seagate harddisks.
    bit.ly/pDg4Ka
    bit.ly/oFa9j5
It has all the bells and whistles to run your own show. I just need to learn how to bell and whistle, lots of UNIX inside.
Today I got the mailserver up and running with my own domainname, so now you can reach me too.
The coming months I start migrating my website from MMe. But first I must get aquainted with some httpd.config directives I want to use on my current computer before I configure the NAS.
    So lots of fun ahead.
    Here are the pictures, BTW

  • Can BC host an iWeb site

A friend of mine is currently using iWeb for her site and I was wondering if I could take her files and upload them to BC and host it for her there?
    Thanks so much!
    Annette

Ok, this was a pretty basic site. I don't even think she had a contact form; just a home page, about us, and a couple other pages that had a couple pictures and text.  So maybe that would translate over correctly?  I was doing some research and it looks like in iWeb, when you hit publish it gives you the option of sending it to another host so do you think I might be able to send it to BC?
Sorry, I'm very new to all this!  I use Muse for my sites but I'm trying to help a friend get her iWeb site back up and running (she took it down a few months ago) without it being too difficult for her.
Thanks so much for any help you can give.

  • Can i host an iweb site elsewhere

    Hello
i was wondering if i need to have a mobile account to host a iweb website or can i host it elsewhere.
    thanks

No, you don't need a MobileMe account — you can post your site elsewhere.
To find out how, in Web, click on the Help menu and choose +iWeb Help+. Then click on +"Publishing and viewing your website"+ and then on +"Publishing to a server or hosting service other than MobileMe"+.

  • Hosting for IWeb Site

I created a beatiful website using iWeb - don't get me wrong, .Mac is great, but not what I am needing to promote my business. What are my options for getting my iWeb site onto the WWW? What hosts are out there that are compatible with iWeb?
    Thanks,

nearly every host allows you to get your site online for iweb! common ones include:
    http://yahoo.com http://godaddy.com http://1and.com http://strato.de
depending on your country - there might be better hosts!

  • How to lock mp3 tracks on my iweb site? (tracks i made with GB3)

    hi
i have a private iweb site, containing about 5 or 10 songs.
i use to send the link to friends only, a small group.
now i had the idea to publish a link in the blog at my myspace site.
the quality of the tracks at myspace is poor, its only 22,5khz when playing tracks in the standalone audioplayer of myspace.
my mp3s sound better, 320bit, best encoding with lame.
is it possible to "Lock" the tracks somehow, in order to prevent that everbody can download it easily? i wouldnt mind if some people with heavy skills figure out how to download it, but i wouldnt like to offer the tracks to everybody as downloadable item.
i heard that you can overlay a layer/box which is invisible. is that right?
    my simple page:
    http://web.mac.com/purepeter/iWeb/tracks/tracks.html
    thanks for any help

If you put your songs on your website anybody can record them using the appropriate software. I wonder how many people actually bother to do this! Normally you would edit out a clip and publish this as a sampler if you don't want people "stealing" your songs.
If you want to sell your songs on MySpace you can set up your own site there and sign up with SnoCap. They do all the work for you.
    For an example go to...

How do I upload a website I made from a flash template to my mobile me server, I had a iweb website published there, now I want to use my same domain name and publish the new flash site I created to the mobile me server and disable the iweb site.

Just log into your MobileMe account and go to your iDisk and delete the iWeb site that is there.
You can load your other site there by simply dropping and dragging your files for your new site to the Sites folder on your iDisk. Alternatively, MobileMe uses webdav so you can use Cyberduck to publish too.
