How do I 'home share' without Home Sharing??

I used to use Home Sharing so that my MacBook Air in another part of the house could access, import photos from my iMac iPhoto library (my main iPhoto library).
Home Sharing no longer is an option.
Until I eventually get around to Yosemite and "Photos" or whatever Apple has now come up with in the name of "improving" (read: "confusing") things, HOW can I IMPORT or view photos from another computer's library without home sharing to help me out?
Help! I have people visiting in a few hours and a lot of photos to show them, but we can't all stand around a cramped tiny office space watching them on my iMac. I need my MacBook Air to show them but the MBAir can't access them!

Make a copy of your iPhoto Library on an external drive and open that copy on your MacBook Air - See this link:

  • Can't figure out how to use home sharing

    Since the latest couple iTunes updates, my family and I can not figure out how to use home sharing. Everyone in our household has their own iTunes, and for a long time we would just share our music through home sharing. But with the updates, so much has changed that we can no longer figure out how to use it.
    I have a lot of purchased albums on another laptop in the house, that im trying to move it all over to my own iTunes, and I have spent a long time searching the internet, and everything. And I just can't figure out how to do it. So.... how does it work now? I would really like to get these albums from my moms iTunes, onto mine. I would hate to have to buy them all over again.
    If anyone is able to help me out here, that would be great! Thanks!

    The problem im having is that after I am in another library through home sharing, I can't figure out how to select an album and import it to my library. They used to have it set up so that you just highlight all of the songs you want, and then all you had to do was click import. Now I don't even see an import button, or anything else like it. So im lost... I don't know if it's something im doing wrong, or if our home sharing system just isn't working properly.
    Thanks for the help.

  • How to fix Home Sharing with new iOS 7 upgrade

    My Home Sharing wont work now I have updated my iPhone and iPad to the latest iOS.  How do you fix this?

    Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
    You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
    Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
    There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • TS2972 how to reset home sharing

    How do I reset home sharing in itunes, I don't know what computers, I put home sharing on, Most likely I had to reformat the hard drives, So they don't exist. I would like to do is set my account to zero.. thanks

    In short, there is no easy way to enable propagation of ownership to files that are dropped into a home folder.
    However, I use a bash script on or home folder servers to create/fix permissions on a user's apple home folder. The script will go through all folders in the user's home folder and reset the permissions and ownership to the correct values.
    1. Copy the script below into a file (eg. fixpermissions.sh) using emacs, nano or your favorite editor.
    2. Open a terminal on the machine hosting the home folder.
    3. Change to the top level of your home folder tree.
    Eg. If the home folder is /Users/jweston, change to the /Users folder <pre>cd /Users</pre>
    4. Run the fixpermissions.sh script with the username to fix.
    <pre>./fixpermissions.sh jweston</pre>
    5. Done! Note: If the folder does not exist it will be created. Otherwise, the script will fix permissions on the current contents.
    Here is the script...
    <pre>
    #!/bin/bash
    if [ -d ${1} ]
    then
    #Home Dir exists, reset permissions
    chown -R ${1}.admin ${1}
    chmod -R u=rwX,go= ${1}
    chmod -R go=rX ${1}/Public ${1}/Sites
    chmod go=wX ${1}/Public/Drop\ Box
    chmod go=rX ${1}
    else
    #Home Dir does not exist, create...
    mkdir ${1}
    mkdir ${1}/Desktop
    mkdir ${1}/Documents
    mkdir ${1}/Library
    mkdir ${1}/Movies
    mkdir ${1}/Music
    mkdir ${1}/Pictures
    mkdir ${1}/Public
    mkdir ${1}/Public/Drop\ Box
    mkdir ${1}/Sites
    chown -R ${1}.admin ${1}
    chmod -R u=rwX,go= ${1}
    chmod -R go=rX ${1}/Public ${1}/Sites
    chmod go=wX ${1}/Public/Drop\ Box
    chmod go=rX ${1}
    fi</pre>

  • How I solved Home Sharing ATV2

    Followed every piece of advice I could find and turned off all the computers and disconnected everything I could, restarted, updated s/w, restarted router, etc. NOTHING. I finally realized that sharing disappeared from my main itunes account when I closed all the other computers. When I would start home sharing, I put in my Apple ID and password and hit DONE then sharing would disappear.... OK, let me try again, and again, etc. Each time, Share would disappear (out of the pane on the left of itunes). Finally, I did not click DONE and instead selected Music. Lo & behold, I am in business and running home sharing!!!

    Funny (queue the sarcasm) to see so many issues of Home Sharing not working. I too have the issue of the iTunes library losing connection with the Apple TV.
    I turn Home Sharing OFF in iTunes, turn it back on...I also DO NOT click on the DONE button. This indeed keeps the Home Sharing icon showing on the iTunes bar. Was thinking that this would maybe solve the issue (since it disappears if hit DONE when turning on Home Sharing)...but it does not. The Apple TV stays connected to my iTunes library for a while...then randomly loses connection (library gone from the Computers tab on Apple TV). I can get everything working again for a little while by turning Home Sharing off, then back on...but that's certainly not an acceptable solution. I just can't see it being my wireless, since even when my library connection disappears...I can run a network test and everything checks out. Just seems there is a an issue with the Apple TV "talking" to iTunes.
    I have the first generation Apple TV and have had problems with it disappearing from iTunes randomly...which has frustrated me to no end. At least with that one, there is a hard drive and once it finally syncs you at least have most of what you are looking for.
    Simply unbelievable. I am sure that I am gonna get the "it's your wireless router, and since it's not Apple...we can't help" speech from tech support (heard this before). Amazing that these issues keep happening with this product.
    I LOVE this product when it works, but it's maddening that it can never stay connected with my iTunes acct.

  • How long does home sharing usually take?

    I got a new laptop...set up home sharing on both. My new computer says it is loading my library...but it has been for almost 2 hours. Is this normal?
    Thanks

    can't say it is.
    on my hardwired network, it takes no longer than 30 seconds to load a homeshared library (no matter how big).
    if you're connecting wirelessly, you may need to look into the performance of your wifi setup. do you have AV and a firewall running ?

  • How do use home sharing to import items from other iTunes library?

    Okay - the help section in iTunes is not helpful.  I am trying to import items from my girlfriend's library and vice versa.  We have home sharing turned on.  I can see her library and she can see mine.  According to the HELP section, I should be able to choose a cateogry i.e. MUSIC.  Then there is supposed to be a "Show" menu at the bottom of the iTunes window and I should choose "items not in my library" then select the items I want to import and click import.
    PROBLEM:  I can choose a category but there is no SHOW Menu at the bottom of the iTunes window which allows me to select items and import them into my library.
    Suggestions???

    Well I guess I am not sure now that you asked.
    In ITunes - under "Preferences" I have Sharing turned on so it says sharing my library on local network.
    AND
    In ITunes - under "File" I have Home Sharing turned on.
    Does this answer your question?

  • How to use home sharing for more that five Apple TV 2nd?

    Hi,
    i know that itunes works (with "home sharing" functions activated) only with max n°5 Apple TV 2nd and n°5 Idevices.
    Now, i've a problem because i need to have n°10 Apple TV that work in the same time with itunes installed on Mac Mini (lion OSX).
    If i use MAC mini with Lion Server OS, the limit for "Home sharing" increase ? or Is possible to use two account for "home sharing" with only one itunes?
    Thank you

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Providing all devices are correctly set up on the same home network, you can stream content on your devices to the Apple TV.
    Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.
    When displaying the content you wish to mirror on the iPad 2 (or better), iPad Mini, iPhone 4S (or better), double tap the home button (quickly) and swipe the bottom row of apps to the right to reveal the playback controls, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.

  • How to use  home sharing.

    I have two computers with two different libraries but i just can't get home sharing to work. any ideas?

    I assume the the PCs are connected with cables and the hardware is set up. This microsoft article explains it in GREAT detail, perhaps too much detail for more experienced users
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Setting-up-a-home-network
    Scroll down to the bottom for the section
    *Test your network*
    Another quick test is to see if you can put a little notepad file in each PC's Music folder from the other PC.
    That will test whether file sharing and permissions are set up correctly.

  • HT3819 how to use home sharing using a different apple id?

    I use to have a regular ipod where I would buy music from itunes using my parents email account and apple id, but now I have an ipod touch where I set it up using my own email and apple id, how do I transfer my music from my parents desktop to my laptop? I'm having difficulties doing so because we don't use the same apple id. Is there a way this can be done?

    You could copy the music to a DVD to your laptop then authorize it to play the songs purchased with that other Apple ID.

    It's not possible I'm afraid, you will need to purchase a new remote.
