How do I hook up a PC monitor to my Mac?

Five years ago, when I was young and foolish, I bought a PC. Last evening I dismantled it and the thought struck me that maybe I could use the perfectly good monitor as an adjunct to my FCE movie making. Perhaps I could display the browser on it and have all that prime acreage for my actual editing.
The monitor has two cables and at the end of one is a three point plug which even I can recognize is the gizmo one shoves into those ubiquitous sockets around the house to encourage the flow of (I think its called) electricity. The other cable end is a different matter. I tried to find it on the 'net so that I could name it for you, but no luck. The business part of the plug is a rectangle slightly narrower on one longer side than the other (you may guess that I never took geometry) and recessed inside it are 15 fine metal pins in three rows of five. This was attached by means of two screws into its female receptacle on the console.
You can see where this is going.
Given what I have, is there a way to connect this to my Mac, and if so, how do I do it?

That sounds like a good idea. Some people put the browser and timeline on one screen, and the canvas and viewer on the other. Or just the browser on one screen, and keep the rest of the windows on the other like you said. Really, you should align it in the way that is most conducive to your editing.
When you have both monitors connected, you can just drag the windows between the two monitors, and change their sizing by dragging the corners.
If you find an arrangement that you especially like, and want FCE to remember it for next time so you don't have to manually align it, you can save a custom window arrangement. I think I figured it out... use the HDMI to DVI (supplied) and get a Mini Display to DVI cable for the second monitor...?
You are correct. Get the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter, in addition to using the supplied HDMI to DVI adapter.
Mini Displayport is physically identical to the Thunderbolt, and a video signal (for one monitor) can be passed through the Thunderbolt port.
Also note the max. resolutions under "video support" on Mini's tech specs:
Thunderbolt port with support for up to 2560-by-1600 resolution
HDMI port with support for up to 1920-by-1200 resolution
That may determine which of your monitors you hook up to which port. Also don't go nuts with monitors, the mini might not be able to drive them to their max resolutions.

  • How do I hook up Acer G236hl monitor to my macbook pro?

I recently purchased a macbook pro (non retina display) and an acer G236HL monitor. I would like to hook the monitor up to the macbook for a dual monitor display. There is no port on the macbook to go with the cables provided with the monitor (DVI cable and HDMI cable). How do I make this work? Is there some sort of adapter I can get or am I out of luck?

Use a MiniDisplay Port to DVI or HDMI adapter.

  • How do you hook up a TV monitor to a second GFX card?

hi - after i learned that the Nv7800GT GFX card I ordered with my G5 dual core doesn't output to S-Video, i ordered and installed a 6600 card (which allegedly does). However now that it is installed, i can't seem to get it to recognize the TV monitor i've hooked up using the apple DVI to S-Video adapter. the system profiler just tells me "no display connected" on both of its ports.
Can someone please help me to set this up correctly? I want to use the 6600 to drive an external monitor or beamer.
thx for any help in advance!
    fj

Did you hit "Detect Displays" ?
yes. i notice that in the sys prefs only my cinema display (the one connected to the 7800GT) is shown. in my experience of using "extended desktop" mode, i would see a second display listed, along with several resolution options.
but in this case, i am not using a single gfx card with a second monitor hooked up. so why do i not "see" the second card in the control panel? (it shows up in the system profiler)

  • How do I hook another monitor up to my macbook pro (2011)

How do I hook up another monitor, besides a mac display,  to my macbook pro (2011)?

Dual Link DVI allows for seriously high resolution monitors (up to 2560 by 1600 like the Apple 30inch LED Display - Not manufactured anymore), I believe HDMI has a cap of traditional 1080p (1920*1080).
Edit: according to the HDMI Wiki Article it supports resolutions MUCH higher than 1080p, it's a matter of finding a Computer Monitor that supports higher than that (as I believe most Televisions only support up FULL HD 1080p)

  • How can I hook up 3 screens to a Mac Pro 8 core 2010 model?

How can I hook up 3 screens to a Mac Pro 8 core. One is a 23' Apple Cinema Display, the second is a 20" Apple cinema display and the 3rd is a 32' Sony Bravia HDTV (connected to mini port with mini/HDMI connector) Do I need to buy another video card? I have heard  about 4 different scenarios about this, and they all sound a bit complicated. I thought that you could automatically connect 3 displays with the card that comes with the MacPro. It has a DVI port and 2 mini ports, so it appears that would be for 3 displays. But this is where it gets strange. Any thoughts?

Which video card?  5x70?  If you read about the various scenarios thern for 5x70's you need two active adapters for thee monitors (TV considered a monitor).  And you should have seen references to these apple docs:
Mac Pro (Mid 2010), Mac Pro (Early 2009): Issues with three displays and multiple DVI, HDMI connections
Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Supported display configurations
It's not really complicated.  Search out the appropriate adapters and hook 'em up.   For the 23" and 20", if they are DVI, you need single link adapters.  For the TV, if you end up using the DVI port for it (because possibly you can't find the appropate adapter cmbination) then you need to handle the audio separately since DVI doesn't carry audio.

  • How can I set up an external monitor to extend my screen in windows 7 bootcamp?

How can I set up an external monitor to extend my screen in windows 7 bootcamp?  I have updated bootcamp to the latest version.  The monitor I have works while I am using Mac OS X. While in bootcamp the monitor is dectected and I am able to select the settings and displays however the external monitor remains alseep.  I hooked it up using a mini display port to VGA adapter.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks

On your Windows desktop right click and select Screen resolution from the menu. You should see a window like this:
Make sure you select Extend and then set your resolutions for each monitor.
If this does not work for you try asking on a Windows forum about extending displays to a second monitor.

  • I have a MBPro mid 2013 with 1 Thunderbolt port. Just bought a Mac monitor and want to daisy chain a PC monitor to it. Use a Mini DVI to VGA adapter from MBP to PC monitor. How do I daisy chain the 2 monitors?

I have a MBPro mid 2013 with 1 Thunderbolt port. Just bought a Mac monitor and want to daisy chain a PC monitor to it. Use a Mini DVI to VGA adapter from MBP to PC monitor. How do I daisy chain the 2 monitors?

    Hall Palm Desert,
if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro.

  • How to connect a MacBook to external monitor

I have a MacBook that I am trying to hook up a external monitor to.  I have a HDMI cable that goes from the monitor to a adaptor that goes to the mini display port and the USB port.  I have tried with and without the USB cord.  I have tried messing with the display preferences and nothing works.  I have hooked my MacBook up to my HD TV before using the same adaptor and it woks just fine.  Can someone please help me?

HDMI is kind of a flakey technology as there are several different standards. Thats why Applle never adapted it. I'd look at using a mini display to DVI adapter instead.

  • External video projector - How can I hook up my Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter onto my new MacBookAir if the machine does not have a mini port (but only 2 USBs and 1 Thunderbolt)?

    Hi
How can I hook up my DVI Adapter onto my new MacBookAir if the machine does not have a mini port (but only 2 USBs and 1 Thunderbolt)?
Is there a DVI adaptor already for Thunderbolt?
    Thanks,
    JFR

The Mini Display port and Thunderbolt port use compatible connector bodies. Your current Mini Display to DVI or VGA adapter will still work as before on the newer Thunderbolt capable machines.

There is no option/accessory to do this. You'll need to get a different camera, or use a computer with firewire.
