How do I "house" more photos than will fit on my internal drive?

I'm just about ready to try to make my entire digital photo collection available on my Mac. But since I only have 120GB, I think it will be too crowded to put them all on the internal hard drive (I have them in several locations, but I think the total will be around 60-80,000??). I have an external drive with PLENTY of space, but I don't keep it connected all the time. What is the best way to set this up? Hubby and I are separate users, and I can easily divide the libraries in two that way. Right now, all the currently taken photos are being put on "his side" in iPhoto.
Oh, and I'm using iPhoto 7 (iLife '08) on a Tiger (10.4.11) with no plans to further upgrade any time soon.
I haven't really read enough much about the iPhoto file structure, and prefer to just let iPhoto handle it, and then back up regularly...

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If the external HD is formatted for the Mac you can just move your library to the external and run it from there. You can have a smaller library on your laptop with more current photo or those photos needed for a project. iPhoto Library Manager can be used to quickly change from one library to anotherr and copy albums or events between the two.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Report with more columns than will fit on a page

<p>I&#39;m just beginning to use Crystal Reports (30-day Developer eval). I&#39;m trying to create a report with more fields than will fit across one page. The "extra" fields seem to wrap on the first page. I&#39;d really like to print the report across two pages, like Excel does with its "Fit to 2 pages wide" option.</p><p>Is this possible in Crytal? What do folks do when their report is "wider" than the width of the page? </p><p>&#160;</p>

This is a relatively easy fix. Basically you need to make a huge default page for your printer, and use that layout when printing.
    1. On Windows, go to Start -> Printers & Faxes
    2. Click on File -> Server Properties
    3. Check 'Create a new form'
    4. Change the form name field to something you can remember... I called mine GIGANTIC CRYSTAL LAYOUT
    5. At the bottom change the units to the size you would like. I use 100" wide x 14" tall.Â
    6. Click Save Form when you are done.
    7. Then click 'Close'
In crystal start your report (or create a new one) and change your printer settings to use this new form. If it doesn't show up under your default printer, try changing the printer crystal is looking at, and selecting your new form.
    Â Hope that helps.

  • How can I display more graph data than will fit into memory?

I'd like to graph more data than will fit into my computer's memory on a LabVIEW graph or some other LabVIEW control. In the past I've hacked this with the 2D Picture Control. LabVIEW would read through the huge file one chunk of manageable memory at a time and fill in the appropriate pixels in the 2D Picture Control as it read through the file.
    Is there a better way?

Looks like mikeporter has done most of the heavy lifting for you in his excellent article.
If the data will not fit in memory then you have little choice other than reading chunks at a time from file. I would probably so something like:
Decide how much you want to work with at a time (say 1 MSamples). If your selected 'dataset' zoom level is 'all data' then you will have to read in all the file piecewise, decimate the data, and build up your 1MSamples array. You can then use the LabVIEW graph to zoom in and out and scroll that set of samples. This gives you some limited 'live' functionality on the decimated dataset, and means you don't have to read from the file every time you scroll or zoom.
Then if you want to examine part of the data more closely, you need to change the 'dataset' zoom level to 'just these 100Msamples' (say). Re-read just that section of the file, decimate as needed, and display. As your 'dataset' of interest becomes smaller you will need to decimate less until you can just read sample for sample.
These two levels of 'zoom' - a macro 'dataset' selected from the overall data, and the native graph zoom and scroll, should give a balance of usability without having to constantly read from file as you move around small sections of the data.

  • 'All Photographs' contains more photos than in folders

All photographs collection contains more photos than in folders - (Using LR 4) There are about 6k more photos that are in my catalog (All Photographs) than what is showing up in my folders below.  All of my photos are located on an external hard drive.  I have them organized by year. So for example, if in LR I click on 'All Photographs' in the library module, I can see hundreds of photos from 2009. I can also see all these photos on my external hard drive under the 2009 folder. However , these photos do not show up under the folders in LR.  I've tried 'synchronizing' my folder in LR, but it thinks all of the photos are duplicates, since they are indeed already in the catalog (just not the folder)

To tell you the truth, this kind of thing is nearly impossible to diagnose across the internet, so I have only a few pieces of advice on how to fix this.
If an entire folder has been copied to the internal drive, and that's where you did the editing, but you'd like to use the copies on the external drive, then right-click on the Folder name and select Update Folder Location and point to the corresponding folder on the external drive.
The other piece of advice I have is kind of trivial ... don't create more duplicates! don't put photos on your internal drive! If you yourself are more organized, then Lightroom will reflect that!
    Good luck

  • I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive?

I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive in Iphoto?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • "Last Month" in RECENT shows a lot more photos than just last month's photo

For some reason when I select "Last Month" in RECENT (on the left) I get a lot more photos than just last month, it seems like just about all the photos from the current year!
Any one else running into this problem?
By the way, my library was originally created using iPhoto '07 and I upgraded when iLife '08 came out.

Indeed that is the case but it sounds to me like a bug and not a feature.
I agree - but since this is just a user forum that is all I can do

  • How do i save my photos from iPhoto to a back up drive?

how do i save my photos from iPhoto to a back up drive?

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • How to avoid invoicing more quantity than the PO's in non stock PO?

    Hello SAPients!
Scenario: We create a non stock PO with a material that has no number and no material group, when we use MIRO TCode to invoice it we can create the invoice with more quantity than the PO, we can even keep adding quantity to the invoice.
How can we stop that? How can we configure our system in order to create the invoice with the exact (or less) quantity than the stated in the PO?
Thanks in advance for your kind help.

    Hi,
Use t.code: OMRM & Maintain the following messages
    1. M8 -081 Quantities invoiced greater than goods receipt quantity as ERROR ( maintain GR-based IV in the PO item level )
2.M8 -087( item without GR )  - Invoice quantity greater than PO quantity  as ERROR & save.
    Now try doing MIRO.
NOTE: If the above setting not work ,then Maintain the messages M8 -081 & M8 -087  as ERROR in OBMSG t.code & save.

  • How can I print more photos per page?

    Hi
I have an HP Photosmart printer
When I send an email with a photo attachment to my eprinter it prints the photo 1/4 of an A4 page for each photo. This is ok, and great quality, but it means i'm using a while peice of photo paper for each photo. Even if i flip the paper and reuse it I'm still only utilising 1/2 the A4 page leaving 1/2 wasted. I have two important question.
    1. Is it possible to set the printer up to prlint a photo at full a4 size?
    2. Is it piossible for the printer to print 4 photos per a4 page?
    Thanks in advance.
    Henry

    Hello theatty,
If you are using the ePrint service to print photos here is what you need to know. ePrint settings can be changed by logging into ePrintCenter, and selecting print options on the left side of the ePrint panel. Here you will find settings for color options and paper size. Print options only apply to documents not photos. Here is the answer for question 1 Photo files will always be printed in 4x6. Here is the answer for question 2 currently there are no ePrint options to print multiple photos on 1 page.

  • Info shows way more photos than photo folder does?

the info on my iPad tells me I have 745 photos, however, in my photo folder, I only find 177,
and I don't have a lot of photos in other maps...
still it takes 2,5GB of memory, which I think is quite a lot, where are all those photos my iPad tells me I have?
and how can i fix this?

There are many possibility that the photo is hiding.
Maybe you turn on the photo sharing which is located at setting>photo&amp;camera. Is will add up the 177 so it will become more.
Second is you have more then one apple product so the photo will transfers here and there.

  • Pictures have more photos than LR

    Hi,
I am just moving my photos from Aperture to LR by Exporting the Versions into non Aperture folders in finder and then "move" them into LR.
In LR it lists three short of the number that it shows in Pictures. So that presumably means 3 photos not been imported into LR somewhere along the way? Yes/No?
How do I go about trying to find the three?
I have gone through Find Missing photos and there are "no missing photos"
The synchronise option is greyed out so cannot select this option for some reason.
What else can I do to find the missing three photos?
    thanks
    john

    Thanks,
How would I go about finding the name of one of the photos that isn't shown in LR? All I know is that there are three less in LR than Pictures.
I am unsure which Folder it comes from and I have now 900 odd photos to go through.
I tried using the procedures for moving Aperture to Lightroom but they all came out in date order which was of no help to me so had to move manually and export from my Managed Aperture Library to a Referenced one to begin with to be able to Import into LR. I did find the procedures rather unclear, no not so much unclear but it seemed built for people who understood a lot technical stuff than I did and didn't seem to be for beginners. Using Aperture I was taking photos, but since moving over to LR I have had to learn a lot about computers/cameras/background info to a lot of photography areas which is all new to me. Have learnt a whole lot and sure it has helped me but not without its pitfalls during my learning process.
Could I have Exported a Folder at a time rather than each photo then? If so how would I go about doing that?
I have noticed in Finder that some of the early photos that I exported (from Aperture) I can click into a see an image, yet most of them I just get a blank folder in Finder. The photos are in LR which is the main thing. Will it create a problem with not being able to see the photo in Finder? Not so much that I want to see them there but thinking about any negative knock on effects.
Look forward to hearing from you and clarifying these issues.
    thanks a lot
    john
