How do I identify the 'new' MacBook?
I am shortly in the market for a basic MacBook (2 GHz model is OK) to complement my current iMac. I heard that Apple has recently upgraded the MacBooks with new chip architecture, glossy screen, etc., but they look very similar to the old, and I am not very familiar with either.
My question is: when I go into a store to purchase one, how can I tell whether the product on offer is the new version or the older version? Except in Apple stores (none anywhere close to where I live), the sales staff isn't all that Mac-savvy, so it's "buyer beware". Buying on-line would be even more difficult, as I would not be able to see the item or ask pertinent questions: I hope not to have to go this route.

You could also ask them what type of graphics-chipset is installed in the MacBook in question...
previous models of MacBooks come equipped with the *Intel GMA 950*
whereas the more recent Santa Rosa MacBook comes with the newly improved (?!)
*Intel GMA X3100* integrated "graphics processor with 144 MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory"

I got a new macbook pro on monday this week. I just found a few of questions, but it was okay. Before I've already changed computers for many times or just went to apple store to ask what problem this computer had. Now I feel a little bit tired to go again. I have always asked myself. Do I really need to buy Apple or buy another brand PC. So, I want to know what you guys think?
I picked mine up on the day they were released. The only issue I have had is two freezes and one strange sound during one of the freezes. But, I have had no issues in the past two weeks so I'm very happy. I will admit that this is the first glossy display I have owned in the fourteen years I've had a computer and it takes some getting used to.
Rather than going into the Apple Store to ask a question, perhaps posting a specific question here may help. I've read about problems people are having with the updated MB and MBP but Apple seems to be trying to fix these issues quickly. -
How can I sync my iPad 2 with my new MacBook Pro when it is already synced with my old MacBook? I am getting a message on the new MacBook Pro that says I am not allowed to sync the iPad 2 because it is synced to another iTunes library.
1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPad but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPad with it.

On the MacBook launch iTunes.
From the menu bar click Store / Authorize This Computer.
Now sync your iPhone.

I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

I've had my Macbook for about 2 1/2 years now with insurance from PC World here in the UK. I was hesitant at first to hand in my Macbook earlier to be replaced using the insurance as it takes 2 weeks to be fixed (terrible, I know).
But now that it's the end of the summer holidays and I'll be returning to the university, I think that it's the perfect time to hand it in for repair.
I have an external hard drive capable of containing everything (apps, files etc.), but what is the best way of backing up the files, and how would I go about uploading the data onto the new Macbook? I remember on startup that there was an option to extract files from an external hard drive?

Adam.You can use Time Machine to back up your files and then use the Migration assistant to bring back your files from the Time Machine backup. Other applications such as Carbon Copy Cloner may also do the job for you.

I have an Ipod classic sync'd to a PC. The PC is no longer working. I purchased a new MacBook pro. How can I sync the Ipod to the new Macbook pro
Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time. It will recognize the iTunes library on the Mac as a new library. If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library. So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your Mac first.

How to use the new MacBook 13'' with Built-in 7-hour battery
Hi,
I just bought the new MacBook, it is my first Mac, and having the Built-in 7-hour battery I don't know if I can plug it in most of the times without doing any damage to the battery.
On other portable computers, I just take the battery out and than plug it in and use it, but in this one that can not be done.
So, what to do? Try to always drain and recharge fully, or it is no problem to plug it in when the battery is fully charged?
I read that you should let it sleep(when it goes to sleep because it doesn't have battery)for 5 hours before charging it so it really drains. Is that really necessary?
Also after it goes to sleep and I plug it in to charge, should I let it charge in Sleep Mode, or should I Shut it down and let it charge?
What has been your experience with battery life? The first time I used it, it lasted for 4hours, is this normal and it will get better with 3 or 4 fully charges/draines?

PantufHey guys, I understand your concern that you're not getting 7 hours out of your battery but let me put a couple things into perspective and also offer you some info from Apple's website that may or may not explain why you aren't getting the full 7 hrs.
First mgb545, 5.5 hours is killer for laptop battery, but nonetheless you paid for it for the 7 hour battery so I don't fault you in any way for wanting what they said you would get.
Second, the MacBook is Apple's "sub $1000" notebook. At first mention of that you think, "alright, it's under a thousand bucks!". It is, it's just $999...
My point is that it's an advertising game. The MacBook can get +up to+ 7 hours on a single charge but not everybody is doing the same things or has the same configuration as when Apple was testing their machines. You might have a Time Machine HDD backing up (which I don't recommend nor do I think you guys do since you didn't mention it) or some other USB peripheral that takes power which would lower the battery's life. That all being said, I think or at least hope you'll find your answer there. For starters, it says "various websites". Who knows if those were basic HTML or Flash heavy sites or a combination of both? The other stipulation of this is brightness. Do you guys have your brightness at 50% or is it higher?
Try this, I know the weekend just passed, but if you find that you have 7 hours where you don't need your laptop, leave it on, make sure it doesn't go to sleep or screen saver, play with it every so often, leave wi-fi on, make sure your brightness is at 50% and then see how long it lasts.
One last thing, when you say you're getting 5.5 hrs out of your battery, how low are you letting it go to? I'm assuming when Apple says "a single charge" they mean it. So if you're getting 5.5hrs when it goes down to 8 or 10% you also need to factor in the extra time you might gain from that.
Hope this help, let me know how your computers are set up, I'm curious to know if this will resolve or at least account for your lack of 7 hrs because me just recently got the 13" MBP and it doesn't get 7hrs either.

Without knowing what you have tried please open System Preferences - Sharing - File Sharing and select File Sharing. If you still have trouble you can call AppleCare in the morning when they re-open. You have 90 days of telephone support if you haven't already bought AppleCare.

I just upgraded to a new MacBook and my wife is inheriting my old MacBook Air. How can I change the her MacBook Air to now be fundamentally hers? That is, so the House Icon under Users folder is her name and not mine? Also the default AppleID for purchase stubbernly remains my own.
You do not mention it, but I will assume you are running OS 10.9.1.
Go to: Apple menu / System Preferences / Users & Groups. Click the padlock and enter your password.
Click the + (plus sign) and set up a new account for your wife. You have to enter a bunch of info. And then create the correct Login Options. Automatic login does not require a password from the selected user.
When that is done, verify the account works by restarting the computer and login as your wife.
Make sure that any applications in your own Users folder that will be needed are moved to the Applications folder in your wife's Users folder.
Now go back to Users and Groups, click the padlock and authenticate, select your own account, and hit the - (minus sign). This step cannot be reversed, so you might want to wait a few days before doing it.
When your wife is logged in, the App Store will know.
