How do i import a large word document into Indesign CS6?

I am a new user to InDesign, using version CS6, I would like to know if there is an easy way to import a MS word document into InDesign. The document is about 1000 pages and contains text, images and tables.

Notes on importing from Word to InDesign CS6 and exporting via Kindle Plugin can be found on my blog at:
http://02cafd3.netsolhost.com/blogs/eBookTec/?p=316
To make a long story short, the Kindle Plugin has a long-standing problem with tables and/or more than a certain limit of hyperlinks.  Since these problems have persisted for at least 2 years now, I must conclude that there are organizational problems on the Kindle Plugin project.  The possibilities include too many junior programmers, not enough attention to the project, not enough positive incentive to make the plugin work and any number of possible management weaknesses.  It took our JPL team about 3 years to put Spirit and Opportunity on Mars, so there's no way a technical problem could be standing this long in the way of the Kindle Plugin handling tables or any number of embedded hyperlinks - nor, for that matter, a Word source document of any reasonable size whatsoever.  One might also cite a lack of competition in this new business sector but then you'd have to ask, do they want to play in the eBook market or don't they?  Companies like Apple succeed by ignoring the competition and in this way end up setting the standards for decades to come.

  • Long Word document into InDesign

    I understand how to place a Word doc into InDesign and even through InCopy and preserve all the styles etc, but what I am missing is how to get a 100 plus page document into InDesign without having to maually place each page.  I am sure there is something simple that I need to set/change to get multiple pages in there automatically.
    Thanks for any help!

    Autoflow.
    Drag in a new page after the last page, go back one page, click the out port (little red plus sign at the bottom right of the frame), take your loaded cursor to the next (last) page, shift click in the upper left margin corner. ID will create as many pages with frames as it needs to flow out all the text.
    You can also do this when you first Place the text. Just shift-click the loaded cursor instead of clicking (without shift).

  • Advice on importing a 250 page document into indesign 5.5

    Hi,
    My job needs me to put together a fairly large well-designed 250 page book. I currently have the document in a 2007 Miccrosoft Word file. I was trying to read on the Adobe website, as well as on the forums, but I am hoping to get some additional clarification. I was wondering, can Indesign 5.5 inport such a large word document and is it a difficult process? Also, would it be good idea to even try and import a document of that size, or is InDesign not really made for doing something like this? Thanks.
    Louis

    This is a major project and will require a fair amount of "advanced" technique (like using Styles properly), whether you make one file or a series of combined chapter files in a Book (In ID, a Book refers to a container file that holds information about other documents and is used to coordinate them and ooutput to a single finsehed document. It has nothign to do with waht the content actually is). The advantages I can think of to using a book over a single file are ease of navigation (fewer pages to scroll through in any document), some convenience if more than one person is working on the project as multiple docs can be editied by differnt people simultaneously, and a (very) small bit of additional safety from loss. With a single file, if it's damaged the whole thing is damaged, with a book, you lose only one document and the rest are still good. For a project this size, especailly if it has any cross-references (which are very flakey across documents) I think the advantages are minimal compared to some of the potential porblems John has raised.
    But the main reason I'm posting is that I get the sense you are a new user, and I STRONGLY suggest you take some time to get a little training before you dive into something this big and dig a hole that you'll have trouble climbing out of. Lynda.com has some great video training, and a lot of new users find Sandee Cohen's Visual QuickStart Guide to be an excellent book (it's the most recommended book on this forum).

  • Is it possible to import fast a word.doc into Indesign

    Hallo,
    I am producing department documents. Now I have some problems because I created them in word from microsoft.
    Is it possible to import the word documents into the indesign format in an easy way?
    It should be time safing and effective.
    I would be glad for some answers!
    best wishes

    The way you move word dodument s into InDesign is by using File > Place..., selecting the word file in the dialog, chooing import options if you like, and clicking the cursor in the InDesign document. How you've set upt he ID file will have a lot to so with wher you should click and whether or not you should be also pressing the Shift key to autoflow.
    It's quite clear you have no idea how InDesign works, so before you get into trouble you should look around for some books or tutorials, and try reading the help files. One of the best books out there for new users is Sandee Cohen's Visual QuickStart Guide to InDesign.

  • Cannot copy and paste from an external document into InDesign cs6

    I am unable to copy and paste from "anywhere" into my InDesign cs6? Not from emails, word, or any other programs? HELP. thanks.

    You might find more accurate help here: http://forums.adobe.com/community/indesign (InDesign Forum)
    Copying and pasting is not usually a good idea. Try using the "place" command to place your external files or documents into InDesign. Nevertheless, you should be able to copy text from Word or other programs with no problem. How are you doing it exactly? Try to do it not only with keyboard shortcuts, but using the actual "copy" and "paste" menus on both programs.

  • How do I keep leading when importing a Microsoft Word document to indesign?

    I have a long document in Word that has some simple styles applied to it (a few colors and different fonts) but when I try to place it in my indesign file, the leading changes. Everything else stays the same. Any idea why it changes? I thought leading is one attribute that's supposed to import if I have "preserve styles and formatting for text" setting checked in indesign...
    I don't know if it matters, but I'm using Mac OS 10.9 with Indesign CS6 and Microsoft Word 2011

    Migintosh, I hadn't thought of that, but turns out that is my problem. I seems when I place the file, indesign in automatically changing those values. Is there a way to force indesign keep those at 0 (or whatever value I want) as I place the text? Right now, what happens is I place the text and then have to select all and manually set the before and after to 0 since indesign decides to change the after spacing to 0.1389.

  • How to cut and paste long Word document into text generator?

    I have a very long list of attributions in a Word document.
    When I cut and paste it into the "Sample Text" area, it goes in fine.
    But when I try to look at it ... either as simple text or, preferred, scrolling ... I only get parts of the document.
    I can correct it by adding a 'return' in the middle of every few words.
    But my document is so long, it would take a long time to do that one by one.
    Solutions sought: How to just import the whole document and have it scroll, zip-zip?!

    Thank you DH and skalaki, I had not known of the Boris title generator. Funny, I had looked in the FCE online manual until 'titling' and editing text ... didn't see mention of that.
    In any case ... I've now found it and trust I'll be able to figure it out.
    Since skalaki was first with the answer, I awarded the 'solved' there. DH's comments were further helpful.

  • Importing addresses in Word document into Address Book

    I have a Word document that has all of my addresses in a label-like format.
    How do I import this into Address Book? can I make some easy modifications so I do not have to retype the whole thing into Address Book.

    Mail can import a tab delimited text file. Do a find and replace to change the spaces to Tabs. If you have a double-return between records, then you can search for that and replace it with a manual line break. Then, change the rest of the paragraphs to tabs so that each record is one line.
    You can then change the manual line breaks back to paragraph marks.
    You may have to ensure you have the same number of fields for each record by adding tabs to ones that don't have all the info of the rest.

  • How can I import an XML DOM document into another?

    Dear all,
    I'm using the following bit of code:
         public static Node replaceNode(Document replacedDocument,
                        Document replacingDocument,
                        Node replacedNode)
         //Create a documentFragment of the replacingDocument
         DocumentFragment docFrag = replacingDocument.createDocumentFragment();
         Element rootElement = replacingDocument.getDocumentElement();
         docFrag.appendChild(rootElement);
         //Import docFrag under the ownership of replacedDocument
         Node replacingNode =
         ((replacedDocument).importNode(docFrag, true));
              //In order to replace the node need to retrieve replacedNode's parent
         Node replaceNodeParent = replacedNode.getParentNode();
         replaceNodeParent.replaceChild(replacingNode, replacedNode);
         return replacedDocument;
    to import a DOM document into another DOM document, so that it converts something like this:
    <?xml= .... etc>
    <Data></Data
    to:
    <?xml= .... etc>
    <Data>
    <Yellow>Butter</Yellow>
    <White>Marzipan</White>
    </Data>
    Instead, what it is doing is:
    <?xml= .... etc>
    <Yellow>Butter</Yellow>
    <White>Marzipan</White>
    I know that it is stripping out the <Data> elements because of the call to the replaceChild
    function, after getting the element's parent, but if I change
    Node replaceNodeParent = replacedNode.getParentNode();
    to
    Node replaceNodeParent = replacedNode;
    I get an error about node node being accessible.
    Please help!

  • How to Best Import QuarkXpress 8.0 Files into InDesign CS5

    Folks,
    Searched the forum, but I'm only finding info on older versions of Quark and InDesign.
    I've got a ton of end user documents in QuarkXpress 8.0 that I need to import into InDesign CS5.  (These are installation and operation manuals for data and telephony modems with lots of illustrations and diagrams in them.)  I just downloaded the trial version of InDesign CS5 and could use some help.
    The import procedure (for the older software) looked to be quite cumbersome.  I'm hoping that InDesign CS5 is more capable and efficient at importing QuarkXpress files.  I also read about Q2ID by Markzware.  Does that product work with InDesign CS5, or is it even necessary with InDesign CS5?
    Any advice and guidance will be appreciated.  Got to get started soon!
    Thanks for your help!

    Hello Joel,
    Thanks for your comments.  I've done enough conversions in the past 25+ years as a tech writer to know that I will be faced with some clean-up efforts after the import.
    My Quark template is pretty simple... one big text box on the right-hand side of each page (landscape), leaving the left-hand side of each page for my illustrations and graphics to be placed.
    I think my biggest conversion problem is going to involve these graphics.  Many of them have text callouts (in text boxes) with arrows (made with Quark graphics) pointing to the proper spot on the illustration or graphic.  I'm wondering how well those will all convert and import.  I do have them all grouped in Quark.  By that I mean that one graphic and all of its associated text callouts and arrows are grouped.
    I guess I'll find out!

  • How do you Place rtf files from LibreOffice into InDesign CS6

    I am new to InDesign CS6. I am having a problem Placing LibreOffice rtf files into InDesign.
    I am using LibreOffice 4.3.2.2, Lotus WordPro, and Windows 7. I am saving my work in rtf files. Each page has two columns.
    Placing rtf files from WordPro into InDesign works with no problems, but - I wonder just how long WordPro will continue to work with Windows 7 so I would like to switch to LibreOffice.
    When I Place a rtf file that has two columns from LibreOffice into InDesign, I get a loaded text cursor, but nothing loads. I can take this same file, remove the columns so there is only one column, and it loads just as it should. Further, if I load the one column file into a Master set up for two columns, the file loads into two columns with all the proper formating.
    Please guide me in how to Place the LibreOffice two column rtf files into InDesign.
      Thanks.
      Carole

    Thanks to everyone who read about my problem. I have solved it myself by using "RTF Import Options."

  • Need help importing large word document into CS2

    I am using ID CS2. I am putting together a document that has 120 pages that's 11.625 wide by 21.25 tall (newspaper) and will be in 8 columns. I want to place a text document using the autoflow method. My problem is, there are so many words, characters, etc. that my ID freezes up. I have changed the original document to a Word Doc, Excel file and a text document. Changing the type document seemed to make a difference. What is the best way to place the text and format it?

    Technically, you don't need to draw the text box first. If you already have your margins and columns correct (which I assume you have set up on the master so it automatically applies to all pages), ID will create the textbox when you autoflow (shift click or alt click with a loaded curser). Just click with your loaded curser in the top left of the first column.  Another way to do this is to create an 8 column text box on your master and click over it on the actual page.  The advantage to this is that you don't have 8 text boxes across your page, but one single text box divided into eight columns.  There are pros and cons to both work flows, though it appears that the new CS5 has more pros to the single text box with columns than the eight text boxes.
    You should only remove the styles and formatting if you want all the formatting stripped from the file as you place it. Otherwise, you can actually map the styles in the placed document to the ones in the ID file from that dialog box, and that might save you a lot of formatting time with such a large document--assuming that the file you are placing is correctly styled and formatted (which is not always the case).
    Since I'm now not sure what you meant by ID "freezing" in your original post--if ID actually crashes (closes itself with or without an error message) when you try this import, you might try opening the final text doc and breaking it up into smaller segments to place. However, there should be no problem placing a text document of that length into ID. If ID is just pausing for a while, do give it time to actually process all those pages.

  • How do I import a large iPhoto library into an iMac running Yosemite without losing the existing division of the library into albums?which file do I look for on the older Mac, running Snow Leopard?

    Import of library

    You don't import one library into another.  Simply copy the library from the older Mac to the Pictures folder on iMac.  If you already have a library on the iMac rename it first.
    Next launch iPhoto on the new iMac with the Option key held down and select the newly copied library.
    If you have photos in the original library on the iMac you can merge that library into the larger, copied library with the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager.  Or if you also have Aperture 3.3 you can use it to merge the two libraries.
