How do I import MPG video format to iMovie 08?

I am using a Sony Cybershot DSC-T20 which takes MPG format videos.
I understand from previous forum threads that I need to convert MPG to a format acceptable by iMovie 08. One software recommended is MPEG streamline or the DC30 Xact Driver. However, after downloading, I get this response "You cannot open DC30 Xact Driver preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac."
PLEASE HELP! Is there another free software? Is there anything I can do?

Can I immediately convert let's say 20 clips of 2 minutes at once with streamclip? Or do I have to go 1 per 1? And how long does it take per minute film? (approx.)
If you want DV, then I would stick with MPEG Streamclip here which does allow "batch" processing. I.e., simply open the Batch List window a start adding your files. Each can have independent settings. As to times, they will be different from those on my computer and depend on whether you select the DV(25), DVCPRO(25), or DVCPRO(50) codec or need to re-sample the audio. In any case, the speed of conversion should be on a par with but slightly faster than exporting to DV in any of your current Apple QT-based applications on the computer you plan to use. I don't usually bother to time it as I simply add enough files to the batch list to keep it busy all night, set the computer to not go to sleep, turn off the monitor, and go to bed and hope there isn't a power outage.

Mini now has mavericks and latest iLife stuff, I clicked import, was all good, then at end, no videos came across.

Please describe exactly what you did. In moving to a new machine no importing is involved. The best way is to simply connect the two computers together and drag the iPhoto library from the old one to the pictures folder go the new one and launch iPhoto

Robert, welcome to these discussions.
Most modern digital video cameras ship with their own capture software.
You'll still find QuickTime Pro a very useful conversion tool to resize, edit and transport your final product.
The "One Click" recording feature of video (Mac only) to QuickTime movie format is in response to the ease of video capture from these devices. Most of these files need some further editing anyway.
Now that you own QT Pro you can export your camera files to DV Stream formats (preserving the original quality) and edit them in your favorite Windows software.
I doubt that many Mac users use QuickTime Pro just to export their videos directly to the .mov file format.
QuickTime Pro is a new tool that will now help you convert your captures to Web friendly formats you can share with friends and family.

I had the same problem. Here is a very easy solution that worked for me.
1- Open the .mpg video with QuickTime Player
2-Go to file/export/ and pick the "Ipad,Iphone,Ipod Touch & AppleTV" option
3-Save your movie with the option "ipod touch &iphone 3GS" picked
4-Confirm by choosing folder of choice to save it in
Now this new version of the movie should be able to be read in imovies.

Im always downloading first the files into the computer (50 min process) and then into iMovie (60 min)?

I installed MGEG Streamclip 193b8 and used their utility to install quicktimempeg2 and got a message stating it was successfully installed. (I'm on latest Maverick 10.9.2 on iMac) Then I dragged the VIDEO_TS file from my home DVD into the streamclip app. It asked which of 4 files to use, and I selected the first one. Streamclip played the video with the sound. so far so good. but now I cannot figure how to use quicktime player 10.3 to export this vob file out of streamclip.

I choose the smallest size, 3x4 but I'd prefer to go higher as this DVD was originally a VHS home movie. I'm wondering if after three conversions (VHS,->DVD->MPEG) the resolution will be so poor as to not support a larger size frame? If it can, what size should I select when I export?

It depends on the type of video. iMovie will only import video that it can edit.
In general, you would use FILE/IMPORT MOVIE...

Hi, your video file needs to be converted to eg. a .mov or .mp4 file before iMovie will recognise. I use 4Media MP4 converter and it works excellent.
For the rotating I do not have an answer, but if you would manege you would end up with a very narrow image either way.
