How do I import my personal DVD home video?

I have moved my old tapes of family videos to DVD.  Now I want to load them to imovie, but there is no direct way to import a dvd.  How do I do this?

Absolutely agreed. This "Sam Jim" guy (see his post just below yours) has only posted ads for their (sub-par and very expensive) converters so far.

  • How do I import a personal DVD into iDVD for editing and copying

I am running 10.9.5. I see that I have 2.66 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of memory
Do I have enough power on this machine to even do what I want to do?
I have several DVD's of home movies that have been digitized.
The files on the DVD list Video_rm and Video_ts. I see a place to import this DVD, but I am not able to select both folders to import at the same time.
What do I need to do in order to edit these home movies on my computer?
    thanks,

Here is how I do it, with no quality loss that I can see. (And I'm picky.)
Use Cinematize 2, I use it with iMovie 06 (and a few times with iMovie 11) and iDVD 11. It has several modes of converting the data. One mode is called "lossless".
    http://www.amazon.com/Miraizon-10121201-Cinematize-2-Mac/dp/B0006AAO96/ref=cm_cr _pr_pb_t
    I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09 - 11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.

Cinematize 2 + iMovie 06 + iDVD 09/11 works great for me.
Use Professional Quality in iDVD, good for 2 Hrs on a single layer DVD, 3 Hrs 45 Mins on a Dual layer DVD. I use DVD+Rs only.

  • Re user tip: How can I import a homemade DVD into iMovie for editing? - I've followed instructions so far so good, until I get to "You can then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. "  How do I do that?

Re AppleMan 1958 excellent user tip: How can I import a homemade DVD into iMovie for editing? -
I've followed instructions with success until  "You can then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. "  How do I do that?
I installed MGEG Streamclip 193b8 and used their utility to install quicktimempeg2 and got a message stating it was successfully installed.  (I'm on latest Maverick 10.9.2 on iMac)  Then I dragged the VIDEO_TS file from my home DVD into the streamclip app.  It asked which of 4 files to use, and I selected the first one.  Streamclip played the video with the sound.  so far so good. but now I cannot figure how to use quicktime player 10.3 to export this vob file out of streamclip.

Thank you for your quick reply and for clearing up my confusion.  I'm exporting the first section now.  I choose the smallest size, 3x4 but I'd prefer to go higher as this DVD was originally a VHS home movie.  I'm wondering if after three conversions (VHS,->DVD->MPEG) the resolution will be so poor as to not support a larger size frame?  If it can, what size should I select when I export?

QuickTime Player is not itself able to do this. You need a proper DVD authoring solution such as Apple's iDVD.

  • How do I import a playlist on home sharing?  I get the songs, but not packaged in the playlist from which it was imported.

How do I import a playlist on home sharing?  I get the songs, but not packaged in the playlist from which they were imported. Now I have duplicate songs in my music library.

You can't import media from one Home Sharing library to another by any other means except selecting the individual items you want to import. For example, you can't select a playlist and then click on the 'Import' button to import all the items in that playlist. You have to select all the items in the playlist before you can click on the 'Import' button. By extension, the playlist on the other Home Sharing computer will not be re-created on your computer. You can select more than one item using the 'Shift' or 'Command' keys.
What you can do is create a playlist on your computer first, with the same name if you want, and then use drag and drop to copy the media from the remote playlist to your playlist. Note that the playlist on your computer cannot be a 'Smart' playlist it must be a regular playlist for drag and drop copying to work.
Regarding 'Smart' playlists. If you create a 'Smart' playlist on your computer that uses the exact same filtres as the ones on the remote library when you import the media from the remote library they will show up in the same 'Smart' playlist on your computer.

Can iPad Air be hooked up to AOC desktop monitor? How? We have older person in home needs larger screen. Thanks.

YYou can connect with the cables listed above or with an Apple TV device. Keep in mind that and ipad is what it is and was made to be used as it is. I can tell you first hand that what you are trying to do will likely not be of assistance since the ipad is still required as the user interface. Connecting to a larger display maybe fine for watching movies if that's what you have in mind but for overall use the ipad will still have to be used and thus looked at to type and touch. Even with a bt keyboard there are still to many limitations That only a mouse can solve along with a keyboard and display.
All said, you may be better off looking into, and perhaps using along with the bigger screen, some of the features that can be found in (general-text size) and (general accessibility) settings. Other then that, if you are not mindset on the ipad experience, there are other products on the market that are better suited and more affordable. I have provided care for my mother in law from here 80's to mid 90's. Been there, done that.

How do I access my pictures and home videos from my desktop on my apple TV?  only my music and movies in itunes is showing up.  My icloud pics are coming up but nothing on my desktop.

You would need to have home sharing enabled on Apple TV and iTunes.
Setting up Home Sharing for Apple TV (2nd generation and 3rd generation) - Apple Support
They would be accessed by going to the Computers icon on Apple TV. . Your computer would need to be on and running iTunes.

  • Imported Movies Categorized as "Home Video"

iTunes 11 apparently defaults to categorizing movies newly ripped from DVDs as "Home Videos." Which is annoying, and a fail compared to 10. Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks.

I'm not currently a Mac myself, so I don't have a 'Home Videos' or 'Movies' folder (although that might be helpful for the Mac people)...  All of my movies are in different folders depending on the title, genre, etc...  I just drag video files from the folder into iTunes.
The weird thing is, when I change them from 'Home Video' to 'Movie', that info doesn't get permanently stored.  If I remove the movie from iTunes, and then drag it back in, it's placed as a 'Home Video' again.  So I can't even find a way to permanently change an .m4v file to be a 'Movie'...  I suspect it's the DRM applied to iTunes Store movies that somehow embeds the media type...
I just want the default to be 'Movies' instead of 'Home Videos'...  All the studio films I'm loading in iTunes are hardly _my_ 'Home Videos'...  I'm pretty sure no one in my family can fly or shoot laser beams out of their eyes...    The most common use should be the default.  Most video files in most people's iTunes are most likely movies...

  • How do you import/where do you put video clips?

With my Windows Vista PC, video clips taken by my iPhone or digital camera were imported by Windows Photo Gallery and stored in the same directories as the photos. These videos could then be synced via iTunes in the Photo tab, when you selected a photo directory that contained video files and clicked on the "Include videos" box.
Now on my new iMac, I see the same "include videos" box under the Photo tab for any given iOS device in iTunes. But, iPhoto did not import even my iPhone-created videoes when I migrated my photo library.
So my question (i'm a mac newbie in case it was not clear): How do I need to setup the video import process so that camera and iPhone videos are stored in the places they need to be, so that they can be synced in iTunes during photo sync? Does iPhoto need to be configured in some way to import the video, or am I supposed to use iMovie to import video clips into a library which can be used by iTunes for syncing during the photo sync process? Or is there some other program I have to configure? When I connect cameras with video clips, my iMac is not bringing up any program by default to import the video - is there some sort of configuration option I am supposed to select?
Second question: I have a lot of video clips in avi format created by older digital camers. What format do I need to convert them to in order to get them into a format which can be imported into a library and synced to my iOS devices? Previously on my PC, I converted the AVI files to MP4 format, and it worked just fine. However, again iPhoto did not recognize these files (maybe if I get question #1 answered this will no longer be an issue).
    Thanks,
    JB

I guess the reason I like the iPhoto approach is that it arranges my photos chronologically/as events, which makes it easier for me to view. I also like that I can sync my videos by event. This workflow works for me because I have a tendency to make a lot of video and only get around to editing later, but often still like to look at the raw video from time to time. Meanwhile, I note that viewing clips in iMovie is far less convenient - clearly this is for editing only rather than viewing. So if I understood it correctly, to do it this way, I should convert video clips in iMovie to, I guess, the *.mov format and move those into iPhoto, yes?
I just took a video with my iPhone and confirmed that iPhoto did import it. However, I still can't figure out why iPhoto did not see the existing iPhone mov files in my PC photo library from the USB hard drive when it imported all other photos from the same. I then dragged and dropped some of those mov files manually into iPhoto, and this worked... but not well. Those videos got arranged as a separate event, and then I had to go and put them back into the correct event.
I have hundreds of photo subdirectories from the PC library, and I don't remember which ones have iPhone video files. Is there a way to search the entire photo directory for *.mov files and drag them from there into iPhoto? If I could then see the file name or time/date stamp of the individual mov files, I could then sort the mov files manually into the correct events.
What if I were to make iPhoto reimport from this photo directory, with the hopes that it would automatically pick up the mov files? Would I get duplicates of existing imports by this method?
Finally - am I correct in assuming that I only have to convert my existing avi video clips to mov format in order for iPhoto to be able to handle them?

  • How do I Import an iPhoto DVD "Verbatim" and not as iPhoto wants?

I have a DVD of a set of iPhoto folders, that a professional photographer friend of mine that insists on using iPhoto, that will not import as it burnt to the DVD. Why?
You mount the DVD and it's perfect in iPhoto, but when you got to bring it in in any of the many ways you can, it just doesn't work as expected. I need the DVD to import as it was her version of 6.0.4, in mine.
Even when I create a folder and drag and drop it adds the photos from a previous drop to the folder. And when I look in the main library there are several copies/versions of the pictures.
I would like folder for folder import. That is not happening. I'm using iPhoto 6.0.4 on a PPC FW800.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
    G4 FW800, 2GB RAM, 2-DVR110s, 4-500GB HDs, 3-Monitors, 2-Turtle Doves, 1-iTTUSB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Totally Stuffed/Max'd Out with lots of great toys.

Thanks for the reply. The short version is just fine. Usually it's shorter.
The disc was burned as iPhoto 6.0.4 does and only will do. We got the cute little disc that shows you in red or green and numbers how much room you need and if it will burn and hit the button and off it went. When mounted, it shows up in the Source Panel perfectly as it should be. Dragging the folders out of the disc to the column just moves the position of the folder and no importing happens. When ejected the "moved" folder disappears. If I make a new folder and "drag and drop" the first import works, then the second on, the all the pics from the first drop are included also, even though I did not touch that folder.
If I do a straight import from the pull down menu, I get several versions of the photo and it mixes them all in with what I already have in the library and have to dig for the real picture and not the thumbnail or something else. I tried a smart folder and boy are they lacking in options for that. Like, "imported" when "today". That would have let me find what I just brought in to delete it when the importing went awry.
The only reason that iPhoto is involved it that it was originally used to download and catalog these photos. I'm building a website and have no real need for iPhoto other than getting my hands on these pics.
I did finally go into the disc raw, and looked through the folders on the disc itself, what a mess, I took the main folder and copied it over and then placed the "modified" files over the "originals", replacing them. It was a tad tedious, but got the job done. I spent hours, wasted, trying to make iPhoto work as the instructions, tutorials, forums, fixit forums all recommend and nothing positive came from it. I even tried making eMails attachments and there were too many photos that it stalled Entourage, of which 10.4.9 is suppose to have some interaction fixes for, so there's problems there.
I mentioned to my photographer friend that she might try Aperture. She has it, has, and says that it's more hype than help. And this woman knows her "stuff". And that if it weren't for the fact that the cataloging software that came with her cameras was PC and not Mac, she'd be using that and not iPhoto. I recommended a new Intel Mac and she says it'll be a PC next. She has work to do. Ouch.
I have always used iPhoto just because it was there and easy. But after last night and really having to dig through it, I found all kinds of nastiness. I thought for a moment, although, I have the database backed up, that I had lost at ton of pictures to low res thumbnails that seem to be all over the place. But no originals. Then after checking several copies/thumbnails, I found the originals.
Well I have the pics and am half done, and finally gave up for the moment, going to bed at 9:14am.
Now I have to extract photos from a Flash piece that is being replaced with a simple html page. iPhoto ain't gettin' near this one.
    Thanks . . .

  • How can I import from homemade DVD to iMovie ?

In converting VHS to DV in iMov I use the original 1988 camcorder for obvious tracking reasons. However, I have one tape that was left in the hot sun on my dashboard and, no surprise, is very flaky, but only in camcorder playback. This happened years ago and I had to transfer the (tape only) into a new cartridge. And since I was playing back from a newer VCR it did as well as could be expected. Then last year I put all my VHS tapes onto DVD thru a Panasonic HD/DVD recorder. Since my homemade DVD has no copy protection why can't I import into iMovie? My only other option is to copy from Panasonic to DV tape and then import to iMov and I worry about quality losses with only S video coupling. All my tapes went to HD and DVD in XP mode (1 hour per DVD).

    Hi,
See this thread: QuickTimeKirk, "copying dvd to imovie project" #1, 08:53pm Oct 9, 2005 CDT
You'll need to convert the dvd back to a form iMovie can import, details are in that discussion. Hope that helps.

  • How to? importing non-encrypted DVDs into iMovie

new to Macs - my Sony digital video camera does not have a Firewire port. I'm thinking of having my mini DV tapes of my son converted onto DVD. Does anyone know of a way to get DVDs imported into iMovie? Is there a better way than converting my mini DVs to DVD?

Yes. iLink is Sony's name for FireWire.
I'm pretty sure your camera has it, though it probably did not come with the cable.
    The cable you want is a 4 to 6 pin FireWire Cable such as this one;

No need to buy a Sony branded one.

  • Importing, converting and editing home video mostly

Guys - I am new to Apple. Please be patient !!
I basically need help . I shoot mostly family videos with my Sony cam (.mts format). I need basic conversion, editing and subtitling etc, but since my cam is HD, I would like to keep the quality. I have been disappointed by the poor quality of my .WMV files using "Flip".
I don't mind spending a bit of cash on this. In Windows, "Nero" comes in at around U$60, and is very flexible in file conversion, editing and DVD burning. Looking for similar.
    Many thanks

Possibly iMovie is all you need – except for the DVD part. You may have it already installed, depending on your Mac model; or you can get it for $15 from the App Store. You could then find a copy of the discontinued iDVD (part of the iLife suite, which is typically available at online retailers for roughly $40). Or purchase Roxio Toast ($100) to fulfill your DVD authoring needs.
Alternatively download the trial version of FCP X and see whether you like it. More expensive @$300, but it is a more powerful program.
    Good luck.
