How do I import photos from iphoto to photos?

I'd just like to know how to import my photos from the iPhoto app to the new photo app?

I had the same issue.  When I started up the Photos app it did not automatically start the import from my iPhoto library like it did on my work Mac.  Turns out the Photos app was seeing two iPhoto libraries.  One on my main disk and one on my Carbon Copy back-up disk.   I quite the Photos app and restarted this time holding down the Option-Alt key.  This allowed me to select the correct iPhoto Library for importing.
As a side note after I quite the Photos app I moved the Photos library to the trash (since I did not start using it yet) so that I would not get a Photos Library 2 file.

Can anyone tell me how to merge my iPhoto Library into my Photos System Library or how to import photos from iPhoto to Photos?

How many did you trash at one go? iPhoto will baulk and possibly corrupt if you try trash too many at one go. Expereinced users recommend getting rid of them in batches of about 100 or so.
What's your plan for the remaining images in the iPhoto Library (the 2k photos and 4 videos)?

  • How can I import images from iphoto with the albums and folders?

How can I import images from iphoto without losing the albums and folders I already created?

In Organizer, you can choose File>get Photos and Videos>From iPhoto.
Importing from iPhoto'09: If in iPhoto, you organize your media using photo references, that is, the media actually does not reside inside iPhoto library package, and are referenced through original locations, Organizer does not create new copies of those media and just refer to the original location. but if your iPhoto media reside inside iPhoto library, Organizer creates a copy all media in your pictures folder, also imports albums and tags and other metadata.
Importing from iPhoto'011: In this case, Organizer always creates a copy of your photos in your pictures folder which resides inside iPohto package. It does not import the albums and other metadata like star rating, caption etc.
    Hope this information helps!

how do I drag photos from iphoto to photo stream?

Simply select the photo or photos you wish to add to photo stream from the album you are viewing and drag them onto the photo stream listing under the 'recent' heading on the left-hand side of iPhoto when you see a blue box surrounding the listing drop the photos you have dragged.
Alternatively, select the photos and use the 'share' button in the bottom right corner of iPhoto and choose photo stream from the list that appears.

If iphoto is like iphone with Variable Frame Rate, you won't be able to edit in Premiere Pro (or Elements) so you may need to buy Quicktime Pro from Apple

I have added photos from iPhoto into Photo Stream and enabled my iCloud but I can't see any uploaded photos. Does this sound right?

Enable PhotoStream in iCloud first, then add the photos to PhotoStream in iCloud. Of course, you will need PhotoStream also enabled on your other devices also in order to view them.

  • Uploading photos from iPhoto to Photo Stream

Hi, I'm trying to upload photos from iPhoto '11 (9.4.2) on my iMac onto Photo Stream. It's a set of 43 imported directly into iPhoto from a USB stick, so not taken on any iOS device connected to the same iCloud account.
Photo Stream is enabled in iPhoto and is working fine with the preferences I've selected - I'm not using automatic upload for all new photos.
I've selected and dragged the photos from their Event in iPhoto onto Photo Stream in the sidebar under RECENT. This behaves as I would expect and when I select Photo Stream and look at the contents it says Uploading 43 photos to the right of the title at the top of the Photo Stream window. However it said that 15hrs ago and they're still not there!
The only thing I can think of is whether the date the photos were taken (19-Feb-13) is relevant - they were updloaded on the 12-Apr-13.
Any help would be appreciated, I couldn't find anything out there that alreadyprovided a solution.

If you have your iPhoto/Photo Stream setup as shown in this screenshot
you can delete the photos from the Photo Stream and they will be safe in your iPhoto LIbrary.
But I would check each monthly Photo Stream Event in the library to confirm that they are safely in the Event before deleting from the Photo Stream.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite how do I get my photos from IPhoto to Photos?

I did not realize when I took the Yosemite upgrade that IPhoto would no longer work.  How do I get my photos into the new Photos application?
    So far no luck.

Actually... you need to hold down the "option" key while starting  up Photos... Then follow the steps to select the iPhoto library... You should copy the iPhoto library to the Pictures folder (from the iPhoto folder) and it will convert it and you'll be up and running in a short bit... If your library is large, it can take quite a while to convert and load... be patient.... real patient! but it does work! This method will leave both versions useable, and at some point you'll want to delete the iPhoto stuff (to save space on the hard drive, if nothing else..) I copied my working iPhotos library onto an external hard disk, then used the "App Delete Lite" app to make an archived zip file on the same external drive.... in case I ever need to go back to the iPhotos option... It worked great!

  • IPhoto 04 can't show photos from iPhoto 06 photo DVD?

On my iBook is still iPhoto 04, it takes photos on photo CDs only when they were created in iPhoto 04, newer burned CDs or DVDs with iPhoto 05 or iPhoito 06 doesn't load as photo CD in the sources area. Any ideas?

Hi, c.a.b. Older versions of iPhoto can't read iPhoto Libraries that were created by newer versions, because the structure of the iPhoto Library has changed from version to version to provide new features and greater flexibility. To receive photos on CDs from an iPhoto 5 or iPhoto 6 user, you'll need to ask the sender to export the pictures from iPhoto and then burn the CD in the Finder — just as they would do when sending photos to a Windows user. You will then be able to import the pictures into iP 4 with no problem.

  • How do I import movies from iPhoto to imovie

I have some video in iphoto, which doesn't appear in imovie - why is this?
    Any suggestions very welcome.

Another possibility is to use the media browser in iMovie to access the iPhoto library directly.

  • Import video from iPhoto to the new iMovie

how does one import video from iPhoto video to i Movie for a project. This used to be simple.

In the CONTENT LIBRARY (bottom left) you should see an iPhoto item which when clicked gives you access to your iPhoto library.  Does this not include videos?  (I don't use iPhoto so cannot check).

  • HT204655 Photos App crashes every time I try to migrate my photos from iPhoto

I just installed the Yosemite update and the Photos App.  Every time I try to migrate my photos from iPhoto the Photos App crashes at about 20% complete.  Is there a work around for this?

Have you tried the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools on your Library?
If you don't have a current backup, make a backup of your iPhoto Library and then run the  iPhoto Library First Aid Tools   to repair the permissions and to repair the database.
To repair hold down the  alt/option and the command key simultaneously while double clicking the iPhoto application in the Applications folder  to launch the iPhotos Library First aid tools. Hold down both keys firmly and long enough, until the First Aid panel will appear.
The select "Repair database".  Repeat with "repair Permissions".
If it still does not suffice, repeat with "Rebuild Library".
If it still does not work, download our Swiss-Army.Knife for library emergencies: Fat Cat Software – iPhoto Library Manager
The free trial option will let you rebuild the iPhoto Library.
Then try to migrate the rebuilt library to photos.
You do have enough free storage on the disk with the iPhoto Library?  Migrating needs temporarily additional storage.
