How do I import video from video camera direct to the computer

I have a macbook pro 15inch with retna display. I want to import video from my HDV Video camera. The camera has a HDMI port, and a firewire (squarish port, very small). What can i get to import the video to edit on the laptop.

Frank is right, you can buy from Apple or Best Buy the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Now to your second question. The ports on your camera are similar to mine. I am still working out the HDMI to thunderbolt thing, but the small squarish port is your DV out port. You will need a 4pin to 9pin cable, which I just bought at Radio Shack.. don't get the RocketFish cable from Best Buy, it is BAD!! Trust me, I just spend so much time and money only to find out that for whatever reason, the Rocketfish cable that BestBuy sells is junk. Gigaware at Radio Shack worked INSTANTLY my friend when I fired up iMovie.
Try that and see if that doesn't help.

Hi,
Before you start, you should probably take a backup copy of your design (the .dmd file and associated folder), in case the update does not work out as you had hoped.
You need to use Import > Data Dictionary again, to start the Data Dictionary Import Wizard.
In step 1 use a suitable database connection that can access the relevant table definitions.
In step 2 select the schema (or schemas) to import. The "Import to" field in the lower left part of the main panel allows you to select which existing Relational Model to import into (or to specify that a new Relational Model is to be created).
In step 3 select the tables to import. (Note that if there are an Foreign Key constraints between the new tables and any tables you had previously imported, you should also include the previous tables, otherwise the Foreign Key constraints will not be imported.)
After the import itself has completed, the "Compare Models" dialog is displayed. This shows the differences between the model being imported and the previous state of the model, and allows you to select which changes are to be applied.
Just selecting the Merge button should apply all the additions and changes in the new import.
Having updated your Relational Model, you can then update your Logical Model. To do this you repeat the "Engineer to Logical Model". This displays the "Engineer to Logical Model" dialog, which shows the changes which will be applied to the Logical Model, and allows you to select which changes are to be applied.
Just selecting the Engineer button should apply all the additions and changes.

How can I import images from my camera to my external drive instead of Mac, but still use IPhoto?

I would like to preserve space on my new Mac and import photos from my camera to my external drive instead of my Mac, while still being able to use Iphoto. Not sure how to specify this.

Move your Library to the Extnernal Disk -
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Then import as normal.

HT2498 How do I import photos from my camera without being forced to use any silly mac software?

I haev a PC as well as a new Mac Mini.
It has always bugged me that Mac seems to force me to use a silly image managment software (like iphoto) to import photos from my camera when i plug it in.
On my PC (windows 7) it simply recognizes it as a "removable storage device" and i can access the flash memory as if it was a hard drive and simply drag my photos to a folder on my computer. (this same technique works with my iphone photos)
However on my Mac it seems there is no way to open up the flash memory and just drag photos off and manually import and manage my photos. I do not like all of the complicated software to complete a simple task like this.
Am i missing something? if so please fill me in. thanks!

Open iPhoto, go to iPhoto / Preferences and change the setting so no application opens when the camera is connected.
Whether you change the setting or not, the camera does indeed appear as a "removable storage device". At least mine does:
And you can double click the camera icon and navigate the contents. The contents are shown exactly as they would be on any "storage device":
Thus you have the option in iPhoto preferences to let it do it for you, or do it yourself if that is your choice.

How do I import photos from my camera?

My camera will not mount to import photos.
I have looked in system profiler usb and the camera (canon powershot sd400) is there. When I turn on my camera iphoto launches but doesn't go to import. When I manually try to import through iphoto my camera isn't found.
I have tried using image capture, it crashes everytime I try to scan devices.
I have repaired my permissions.
I have switched usb ports I have unhooked all my perhipherals.
Nothing works. Do i have to downgrade to an old version of iPhoto cause it used to work fine.
Can you help?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try reapplying the 10.4.10 COMBO updater followed by a permissions repair. See if that will allow the Camera to be used by iPhoto. Canon cameras will not mount on the desktop as external media like other cameras. However, using a card reader may let you import without problem. Actually that's my preferred upload method as it avoids any possible aborted import due to a low battery and saves wear and tear on the camera's port. Uploading to a folder before importing to iPhoto gives you a chance to batch rename them to avoid possible duplicate file name problems on exports at a later date.
Delete the Image Capture preference file and see if it will work without crashing.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. I cannot import images from my camera directly into Elements Organizer

I am trying to import images into Elements Organizer from my Canon EOS 6D, but it doesn't work properly. I am expecting the images to appear in the Elements Organizer, but the images are only imported onto disk. At the moment I have to re-import images from the disk location as a second step. How can I perform this in one step, as I have seen this in the tutorials?
I am on a Mac using Yosemite using version 13 of Elements Organizer.

There is no "into". LR and PS just reference your photos on the hard drive.
When you import your photos "into" the LR catalog, LR can copy the images off your memory cards to the hard drive if you have not already copied them, but the photos are referenced by the LR catalog by the path and filename for the files.
If you are having problems getting the images off the cards, what steps are you using and what error messages are you getting?

no you can't only option is to take it apart and put the harddisk in an usb ext harddisk case and connect it to the computer copy the photos to the computer
take the harddisk out of the ext usb harddisk case and put it back into the appletv and assemble it again

in iPhoto you have a library which can be views as events, photos, places or faces -- events and photos view show all photo in your library and faces and places show only thos that have faces or places assigned
albums are logical entities that are pointers to the photos in the library and are used for organization
folders are logical entities that hold albums or other folders and also are used for organization
The photos (by default and recommended) are copies into th eiPhoto library with is a SQL database. you ony access the photos using the iPhoto program or the media browser which is in the lower left hand corner of each open/attach/upload window
If you drag a folder of photos onto the open iPhoto window it will import them and create an event names the same as the folder if you drag the foldr of photos to the source pane on the left it will import them into an event and create an album
The biggest problem most windows users have is thinking of managing their photo with a database rather than the old way of managing files with a file manager
iPhoto is much more powerful since you can serach the database on any criteria

Importing video files already on the computer

I have a few video files made with a cyberlink video editing program that are in MP4 format and present on the hard drive. When I try going to file and clicking import or add files, itunes says it is copying the files, but they dont show up in itunes. These are totally home videos with no copyright protection that were made on my computer. Can I import these into itunes and if so how exactly would I do it?

Are you "downloading" documents from the internet & then printing them out? Any reason why you are not printing directly from the website?

Copy them from your iPad to your computer and then sync them into your photo library.

How do I import clips from my Canon XA10 at the BEST QUALITY

I recently purchased a Canon XA10 - I usually use a Canon 7D (where I use MPEG Stream Clip to convert all clips to Apple Pro Res 422)
When I attempt to "log and transfer" footage from the Canon XA10 - it seems to be importing the footage as Apple Pro Res, but the quality doesn't look HD and is super interlaced...
Is the footage from the camera just crap - or is there a better method to capture footage at a higher quality?

You should see a difference when you switch formats. Try shooting at the highest quality setting, MXP and see the results.
It looks from the specs published on the Canon web site that you have a frame rate choice of 60i, recorded at 60i; 24p recorded at 24p; 24p recorded at 60i, or 30p recorded at 60i.
The frame rate you choose to work with would be up to you. It would be an aesthetic decision, or it could be guided by the frame rate of existing footage you might be working with.
There is nothing inherently wrong with interlaced material, you just need to work with it correctly.
A good rule of thumb is to edit in the format you have shot, then use Compressor to make the output in format you need to deliver.

If you have photo stream set up, that can take up a large amount of room, so check that too. And videos take up much more space than photos.
