How do I improve/increase Illustrator's resources?

Instead of spending the next 4 hours digging thru page after page of typically irrelevant Google searches hoping to stumble on to what I'm actually looking for, I'm just going to ask...please forgive my audacity here :-)
The problem I'm having is that I have a vector project going in Illustrator CS5 that is getting rather...errr...sizable. The project is setup for a 30 x 40 large print with -LOTS- of layers, an ungodly number of paths and shapes, lots and lots of color variations & gradiants and lots and lots and lots of gausian blurs.  For those curious, I'm doing a HIGHLY detailed vector of Tutankhamun's Death Mask (again this is going to be for a poster-sized print, so I'm adding an insane amount of detail). Basically Illustrator has gotten to the point that it will open the file...but that's about it.  If I even try to just move it on the screen, it blanks out and goes to outline mode and I can't get it back into preview mode....and there's still A LOT more detail I wish to add.  Further, at some point I'm gonna want to export all of this to a PNG file for some finishing touches in Photoshop for the final print...and I've already had problems trying to export a preview of this file for my former graphics professor.
I've been keeping an eye on the Performance tab in Windows Task Manager and it doesn't look like it's really hitting the CPU(s) (quad core i5) THAT much and the paging file is barely being affected, so I'm guessing it's likely a RAM issue.  My system does have 16 gigs on it with XP64 as the OS, along with a 4 gig vid card, but I don't know if Illustrator/CS5 is really taking advantage of all that.  Likewise, I don't really have anything other than my virus scanner and my color calibration profile running in the background...not even a desktop image or screen saver (I don't care for "bells and whistles" anyways).  I've been back and forth thru Illustrator's menus and about the only thing I'm really seeing is scratch disks (and I do have 2 set).
So to cut to the chase here, is there ANYTHING else I can tweak out either in Illustrator or Windows to free up some resources?  I know I could rasterize some of the layers, but that tends to negate the usefulness of doing this in vectors (that whole scalability thing).
Any help  here would be most appreciated!

Well, point blank, upgrades are just NOT going to happen right now.  The wife and I are in the process of buying a new house and moving so basically every last penny is going in the bank for the new house....can't even afford the dollar menu at McD's at the moment.  Won't have any cash for "toys" for at least a year.  That aside, while I suspect that sooner or later I will have to go with Windows 7....I really have no desire too.  I -hate- having to upgrade OS's (IMHO MS hasn't put  out a decent OS since DOS 6.0)...and with my wife being an MS programer and having to listen to her b-tch about Windows 8...nope...ain't going there.  I may just wait for Windows 9 instead.
Now all that aside, I did find out yesterday that my system was over-heating again (one of the mounting pins on the CPU fan apparently broke off) so I'm hoping that was part of the problem....still sorting things out on that front so I should know sometime this afternoon.
thanks

  • How can I improve the performance of my app?

    Hi,
    I have written an java application. This app makes a large number of calls on a method getting a value from an array. Profling the app reveals that it spends more than 90% of the time in this call. Because the app makes so many calls to this method the app isnt running as fast as it should!!! Can someone tell me how I can improve the performance of the app? Are there any techniques that I can use to improve the performance?

    I figured you'd ask for those    Since I can't remember the topic/subject line, I have no idea if I have enough time  in this life to try to find them - I had subscriptions for all of them, but of course, those went poof into cyberspace.
    Edit: Athough the search function does not work well (could not specificy 'iMac' - would get "unauthorized to search" every time), so I had to go through quite a few, but I found two of the major threads:

  • How can I improve the stability of itunes64bit 8.0.2 on my Vista system?

    Vista Home Premium: iTunes64bit: application crashes after adding album photos and then changing views (list, Album, split) or clicking on different playlists and back to the entire music library.
    The library has 42,000 items (mostly music) so it is quite large. At launch it takes a long time for itunes to load and display. There is no user cues telling me it is running. It simply displays after 60 or more seconds.
    Then I start working in the library, pasting pictures to multiple items, modifying album titles.
    After doing a few management tasks on my music items and navigating back and forth between the music library and playlist (changing views), the application stop being responsive and according to the log, the app just plainly crashes.
    Sometimes I can restart successfully but most of the times, I need to stop the itunes service or log-out before I can restart it successfully.
    I am using itunes64bit 8.0.2
    I am running it on a machine equipped with 4GB of ram and the library lives on a 500GB external hard drive plugged-in through USB 2.0.
    How can I improve the stability of itunes64bit on my system?

  • How do I improve performance while doing pull, push and delete from Azure Storage Queue

    Hi,
    I am working on a distributed application with Azure Storage Queue for message queuing. queue will be used by multiple clients across the clock and thus it is expected that it would be heavily loaded most on the time in usage. business case is typical as in
    it pulls message from queue, process the message then deletes the message from queue. this module also sends back a notification to user indicating process is complete. functions/modules work fine as in they meet the logical requirement. pretty typical queue
    scenario.
    Now, coming to the problem statement. since it is envisaged that the queue would be heavily loaded most of the time, I am pushing towards to speed up processing of the overall message lifetime. the faster I can clear messages, the better overall experience
    it would be for everyone, system and users.
    To improve on performance I did multiple cycles for performance profiling and then improving on the identified "HOT" path/function.
    It all came down to a point where only the Azure Queue pull and delete are the only two most time consuming calls outside. I can further improve on pull, which i did by batch pulling 32 message at a time (which is the max message count i can pull from Azure
    queue at once at the time of writing this question.), this returned me a favor as in by reducing processing time to a big margin. all good till this as well.
    i am processing these messages in parallel so as to improve on overall performance.
    pseudo code:
    //AzureQueue Class is encapsulating calls to Azure Storage Queue.
    //assume nothing fancy inside, vanila calls to queue for pull/push/delete
    var batchMessages = AzureQueue.Pull(32); Parallel.ForEach(batchMessages, bMessage =>
    //DoSomething does some background processing;
    try{DoSomething(bMessage);}
    catch()
    //Log exception
    AzureQueue.Delete(bMessage);
    With this change now, profiling results show that up-to 90% of time is only taken by the Azure Message delete calls. As it is good to delete message as soon as processing is done, i remove it just after "DoSomething" is finished.
    what i need now is suggestions on how to further improve performance of this function when 90% of the time is being eaten up by the Azure Queue Delete call itself? is there a better faster way to perform delete/bulk delete etc?
    with the implementation mentioned here, i get speed of close to 25 messages/sec. Right now Azure queue delete calls are choking application performance. so is there any hope to push it further.
    Does it also makes difference in performance which queue delete call am making? as of now queue has overloaded method for deleting message, one which except message object and another which accepts message identifier and pop receipt. i am using the later
    one here with message identifier nad pop receipt to delete message from queue.
    Let me know if you need any additional information or any clarification in question.
    Inputs/suggestions are welcome.
    Many thanks.

    The first thing that came to mind was to use a parallel delete at the same time you run the work in DoSomething.  If DoSomething fails, add the message back into the queue.  This won't work for every application, and work that was in the queue
    near the head could be pushed back to the tail, so you'd have to think about how that may effect your workload.
    Or, make a threadpool queued delete after the work was successful.  Fire and forget.  However, if you're loading the processing at 25/sec, and 90% of time sits on the delete, you'd quickly accumulate delete calls for the threadpool until you'd
    never catch up.  At 70-80% duty cycle this may work, but the closer you get to always being busy could make this dangerous.
    I wonder if calling the delete REST API yourself may offer any improvements.  If you find the delete sets up a TCP connection each time, this may be all you need.  Try to keep the connection open, or see if the REST API can delete more at a time
    than the SDK API can.
    Or, if you have the funds, just have more VM instances doing the work in parallel, so the first machine handles 25/sec, the second at 25/sec also - and you just live with the slow delete.  If that's still not good enough, add more instances.

    My videos from my iphone are horrible when I transfer them to my PC. How can I improve the video on my PC? Can I just convert the files to WMV? When the video plays the speed is off, it's half slow-motion and staggers into normal play. The clips are slightly cut as well, the clips do not roll continuously.  I'm taling about videos that are no more than 2 minutes long.  I'm frustrated and I could really use some advice-my kids basketball games is what I'm recording and I'm trying to send them to my family (they are not very tech savvy). Thanks

    Not it's only function but one for which it was most admirably suited, which is why I really hope someone can find a work around. I am hoping my post to the Apple feedback may prompt a useful response from Apple and I live in hope that my post here will elicit a useful response from another user. I did not miss the the text at the top of the feedback form but you presumably missed my initial text, 'someone here can explain' or my subsequent 'work around from another user'
    Just in case anyone reading this has a large collection of music videos, video podcasts or iTunes U then DO NOT upgrade your iPad to iOS 5. If you are considering purchasing the iPad as a useful mobile device to experience these media organised in your iTunes please don't as you will be wasting your money. (unless someone on this forum knows of a way to undo the mess created by those infallible folks at Apple)
    Yes I know it does other things but the purpose I bought it for doesn't work anymore

  • How Can we improve the report performance..?

    Hi exports,
    I am learning the Business Objects XIR2, Please let me know How Can we improve the report performance..?
    Please give the answer in detailed way.

    First find out why your report is performing slowly. Then fix it.
    That sounds silly, but there's really no single-path process for improving report performance. You might find issues with the report. With the network. With the universe. With the database. With the database design. With the query definition. With report variables. With the ETL. Once you figure out where the problem is, then you start fixing it. Fixing one problem may very well reveal another. I spent two years working on a project where we touched every single aspect of reporting (from data collection through ETL and all the way to report delivery) at some point or another.
    I feel like your question is a bit broad (meaning too generic) to address as you have phrased it. Even some of the suggestions already given...
    Array fetch size - this determines the number of rows fetched at a single pass. You really don't need to modify this unless your network is giving issues. I have seen folks suggest setting this to one (which results in a lot of network requests) or 500 (which results in fewer requests but they're much MUCH larger). Does either improve performance? They might, or they might make it worse. Without understanding how your network traffic is managed it's hard to say.
    Shortcut joins? Sure, they can help, as long as they are appropriate. [Many times they are not.|http://www.dagira.com/2010/05/27/everything-about-shortcut-joins/]
    And I could go on and on. The bottom line is that performance tuning doesn't typically fall into a "cookie cutter" approach. It would be better to have a specific question.
