Jamesandmacbooks,
if by “free” you mean “gratis” (as opposed to, say, “open source”), then there’s only one version of OS X to date that’s gratis, namely Mavericks. You can only download Mavericks if you currently have Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later installed. If you’re still running Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.something) on your 2008 MacBook Pro, then you’ll need to first purchase the white retail Snow Leopard DVD, install it on your MacBook Pro, and run Software Update to get it to 10.6.8, after which you can download Mavericks gratis from the Mac App Store and install that. Be sure that your MacBook Pro meets all of Mavericks’ system requirements before trying to install it. If you currently run any PowerPC apps, note that they won’t be supported in any version of OS X after Snow Leopard.

I want to install a third operating system on my macbook pro. I already have windows and i want install unix or linux in there. Is it possible??

Yes, it's possible, but if your Windows system is on a Boot Camp partition then you have to first remove it. Then create however many partitions you want for the operating systems. You have OS X on one, so you need two more - one for Windows and one for Linux. You then install Windows and Linux separately to their respective partitions. Download rEFIt
Use it as the replacement bootloader so you can properly boot from each OS properly.

attempting to update operating system on macbook pro with osx10.4.11.
how is this accomplished and what is the cost ? is the worth the expense give the age of unit?

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is once again available from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

  • How do I install sound drivers on the PC side of my MacBook pro

My son used bootcamp to create a PC side of our MacBook Pro. However, now there is no sound. I asked about it on a previous post, and was told to install the drivers from the installation discs. However, neither of us knows how to access the discs from the PC side. I could use some step-by-step instructions.
AND, another issue: I tried to download a massive (3.2GB) program (for a school course) and was unable to do so on the PC side because of corruption (SLLLOOOOWWW download speed). So I downloaded it on my eMac and transferred it to the PC side of the PowerBook via flash drive. I was able to install it, no problem (or so I believe), but then I couldn't open the program. The only desktop icon was the Install package (.dmg). I went in to the 'programs' section (of the PC) and tried to select it there, but again there was no icon to open it. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi again Bob,
When I went to that link about Bootcamp, it didn't tell me how to do the thing I really need to do. I can boot up into windows (hold down alt. key while restarting, right). But how do I ask Windows to find the right drivers? As you can see, I'm clueless on this. I need a step-by-step set of directions. Do you know of any post that has them? And if I have to "manually go to the device site", I assume that that means that the drivers don't exist on the Mac install disks. What device site would I go to?
About the PC program, I may not have been clear enough. The program I downloaded was not in Mac format. I didn't try to open it or run it on the Mac. I just spoke to the people who make the program and they say that, yes, it is possible to do what I did; the problem has to do with serial #'s of some sort. I'll let you know how it turns out.
    TIA
    Fred J.

  • How do i Sync my Free apps on My Ipad to my Macbook Pro

    Dear Community,
I have never bought or downloaded free Apps on my Macbook Pro, but always did on my IPAD. So now i would like to SYNC my IPAD Apps to my Macbook Pro and i have tried everything and it doesn't seem to work.
I have went under the tab "FILE" in itunes and clicked transfer purchases from "MY IPAD" and since i only purchased one APP (PAGES) which i already have on my MacBook pro i guess it's normal that it does not sync???? But i have like 50 FREE Apps on my IPAD that i would like to sync to my MacBook Pro and regular syncing does not work. I checked Sync Apps under the ITUNES APPS tab and it still shows 0 APPS on my computer....what the ****?!!??
Can we only SYNC from computer to IPAD????
    PLEAAAAAAASE HELP ME HELP MYSELF!!

    Amaru55 wrote:
But let me ask you...do you have to sync all tabs one by one.
    No you do not.
    Amaru55 wrote:
Meaning when you click Sync under the tab "SUMMARY" it should sync all the other ones right?
You click Sync in the bottom right corner of the iTunes window - not in the Summary Tab. You can select sync settings in the summary tab and that is different.
The bottom line is when you click on Sync - it syncs ALL content that you have selected in iTunes to the iPad. You don't have to go though each tab - unless you want to make changes in the sync preferences - like you want to add a new app that you downloaded on your computer in iTunes - or you want to add more photos - changes like that have to be made in the various tabs in iTunes before you sync.

  • HT1338 How do I update the Operating System for my MacBook Pro?

I currently have OS version 10.5.8.  I can't get the proper plug-ins for Flash anymore because my Mac OS is too old.  I've tried updating the OS, but it will not let me install it.  Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.

  • How do I reinstall the operating system on my MacBook Pro without using my apple id?

I'm selling my computer. Everything has been erased. Now the operating system, Lion, needs to be installed. I believe the computer did not come with a cd so reinstalling is done through wifi.

We bought it in January 2010. I'm not sure what OS it came with but when I look at the dates of each OS on wikipedia it looks like it came with Snow Leopard. The only disk I happen to have is Leopard.
Let's drop back a minute and go through what you can and cannot do with this machine.
    1.  If the machine came with Leopard, you can install Leopard and then go to Snow Leopard and up the line of the on-line Mac OS X versions, that is, Lion, and Mountain Lion and Mavericks as compatible.  If the disk for Leopard that you have is a grey face disk, that is a machine-specific disk and will only work if it is the disk that came with your MacBook Pro.  If it is a panted face (black) with a large silver X it is a retail version and will install IF your machine came with Leopard.
    2.  If your MacBook Pro came with Snow Leopard, it will not install Leopard.  If it came with Snow Leopard and is a 2010 machine, it will not install the retail version of Snow Leopard since that is 10.6.3 and the 2010 and later machines came with 10.6.6 preinstalled.  You must call Apple Customer Support and have them send you the machine-specific install disk for that machine.  There is a fee of something like $20 in the US for doing that.
    3.  If your machine came with Snow Leopard, you need to reinstall Snow Leopard and then move to the on-line Mac OS X versions, you cannot download a version with your Apple ID associated with the version currently on the machine.  The starting point HAS to be Snow Leopard for the new owner to do an on-line Mac OS X download.
    4.  With Snow Leopard installed and on-line software updated to 10.6.8, the new owner can then move up to Lion or above depending on the compatibility of the hardware.  To move to Lion or above the machine must have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.  To move to Mountain Lion or Mavericks the machine must meet the requirements in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842.
At any rate, the new owner must install Snow Leopard on that machine before any move to one of the Mac App Store versions of Mac OS X.

HI there - I just bought a 3Q portable HDD External U275-BS in Russia and it won't let me copy to it. Any suggestions? Thanks! Lorrain

Most likely the drive is formatted in Windows NTFS, which Macs don't normally write to (only read) without extra software. You should be able to reformat the drive with Disk Utility. If you only use it on the Mac, reformat it in Mac OS GUID.

  • Can I install a Windows operating system on my Macbook pro

I have been using VMWare Fusion virtual machine to access the windows side of my computer, but I think it is very complicated. It seems to me at one time you could install Windows directly on the Mac. Because of the people I serve I still have need of both Windows apps and OS Lion. Any recommendations?

Virtualbox is one of the simpler programs to do so, plus it only costs the Windows license.  Same with Apple's Boot Camp, but it requires using the special Boot Camp partition creator which could result in data loss if you aren't careful.  See my user tip on the many various options available.
