How do I install an Airport card on a G3?

I bought this Powerbook G3 a while ago, with only Ethernet connection, and I finally broke down and bought an Airport card, after trying some of the other stuff! I have the card 90% into the slot on the left back side of my Powerbook but how do you get it all the way in? Without a hammer? LOL It came with an install disc but it says, "you cannot install Airport on this volume (my Macintosh HD). Your Airport software is currently up to date" but in System Profiler "No information found" under Airport card?
My Imac I'm waiting on reinstall discs, from Apple, the 'book hasn't froze in at least 2 - 3 weeks! I have music playing on that I want to migrate here!
Thanks, Willy

WillyBlues,
Please identify your powerbook G3:

If you have the Powerbook G3 FireWire M7572 "Pismo", there is an original AirPort card available, but it installs ONLY under the keyboard, not the PCMCIA/CardBus slot on the left side of the 'book, plus it works only in the Pismo. Here is what it looks like and how it is installed:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58581
If you have a WiFi PC card, please identify the card and software in addition to what version software you are using.
The PC card on the left side will always extend beyond the frame about 1". You should feel resistance in the last 1" of travel, then you may have to push hard to fully seat it. A PC card icon will then appear in the menu bar. It's possible the PC card slot is in the locked position; read this article on how the slot works.

I have never installed anything in a computer by myself. Should I try installing an Airport Card in my G4 Powerbook by following this site's directions or should I take it to get done? Basically, how easy is it to make a serious mistake doing it by myself? I'd like to try if answer to this question is "not very". Thanks.

You're kidding, right? How do you think it connects to the cellular network? The SIM is what identifies the phone and links to the cell network.

  • HT4634 how to check if my airport card is installed? I can't find it in the network settings, so no WI-FI :-(

Since I bought this iMac more then 2 years ago, I wasn't really bothered that this feature (airport) didn't work in my iMac as I connected my iMac directly via Ethernet to the routher. The wireless router then connects to the other devices in my house. But I want to move my iMac to another room and need the airport-card to work. It was bought with it, but it has never been switched on. Any suggestions, where to check:
1.if the aiport-card has been installed when I bought it?
    2. if yes, how to switch it on? it doesnt pop-up on my screen when I use the '+' in the network settings? Only 'ethernet' and 'blue-tooth'.

Is there a way to see if the actual hardware with driver has been installed in the iMAC?
    it shows that tht following software versioin are installed for Wifi;
    Software Versions:
      CoreWLAN:          2.1.3 (213.1)
      CoreWLANKit:          1.0.3 (103.2)
      Menu Extra:          7.2 (720.1)
      configd plug-in:          7.4.1 (741.1)
      System Profiler:          7.0 (700.3)
      IO80211 Family:          4.2 (420.3)
      WiFi Diagnostics:          1.0.2 (102)
      AirPort Utility:          6.1 (610.31)
But I can't find any hardware in the list of 'system report' that refers to 'airport card'
Is there a way to find out if there is any of such a device built in the iMac at all?
the hardware overview shows: no devices installed  of the following:
    ATA
    Fiber Channel
    Hardware RAI
    PCI Cards
    Parallel SCSI
    SAS
    Thunderbolt drivers not loaded.
it's a iMac, OS 10.7.5, but started with 10.6 when I bought it, 4GB, ethernet, 27".Wifi never worked.
any other solutions that could work? thanks for your help so far Barry!

I've always just connected to the internet via an ethernet cable to my router/modem, but now I don't want the long cord going from the phone line to the office within the house. I have a Airport Express and was wondering if I could set this up in the lounge and connect my computer/laptop/stereo etc.
To do this do I need to have an airport card installed. If so, which one and are they easy to instal?
    Appreciate any help.
    Cheers

If you remove the side door and look down at the mother board, you can observe if the airport card is there. You can also use ASP . There are kits for the bluetooth and airport card available. Installation is not difficult. The difficult part is finding the connector wires. these are tucked at the top border of the mother board. The other issue is which lead goes to which connector. You can find the answer on the internet, just Google it.
Bottom line on the original Mac Pro the wireless reliability with that card is short range. Must have not too much interference.

  • How to install the airport card to my macbook?, How to install the airport card to my macbook?

One time when i was browsing using my macbook, it suddenly hanged. I waited for several minutes for it to return to its normal function to no avail. What i did was removed the battery then switched it on again. It worked again. But could not access the wifi anymore. When i clicked the wifi icon, it says, no airport card  installed.  What should i do?

I'm guessing there is a language issue here.  The graphics card is the actual hardware (chip) in your computer that allows it to create graphics and show them on your display.  There is no way to disable the graphics card on your Air because there would be no way to use it (it would not be able to display anything on any display).  This is a little different on machines with multiple graphics processors, but that's not the case with your Air.  I'd imagine you know what you want to do, we're just having trouble understanding your question.

  • Help! How can I tell which Airport Card I have installed in my Mac Pro?

I bought a mac pro from comp usa in December, without the airport extreme option. I later got an airport card from apple on-line and took it to my Apple store to have it installed. I just don't know if it's the newer 802.11n card or an old 802.11g?
Any way to tell this in system profiler it just says:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87)
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.80.79.1)
    Thanks a lot!

There is only one model of AirPort card for the Mac pro ( it is draft 802.11n compatible ). Some other intel Mac's may or may not have had the 802.11n enabler update applied. The enabler is/was a $1.99 download from Apple, so priced as the FTC deemed that it "added" features rather than revised existing firmware.

  • How does one update original airport card for WPA?

Hi, I've an earlier AX, and an original airport card that I understand can be updated to be able to be WPA compatible. How do I do this? The AX is setup for WPA/WPA2 personal, and I have no trouble joining the network from other macs, and I just learned that the original airport card is supposedly able to be updated to also handle WPA. This card is installed on a g3 imac 700 se with os 10.4.11.
I also posted this question in the airport express forum, but thought it may have a better chance of being answered here after I thought about it a bit.
    Thank you,
    ez

You can't get it to do WPA2.
You can get it to do WPA if you have the right software installed, which you probably already do:
AirPort Card: When You Can Join a WPA Network
The base station or equivalent has to be set up for 802.11b/g that is BOTH b and g, since the \[original] Airport card is 802.11b.

  • Got a new Mac Pro 2008 - need to install an Airport card

    Hello all,
To ensure quickest delivery I opted for the standard config new Mac Pro 8 core (early 2008). I did the same with my G5 4 years ago an installed an Airport Extreme card (with some difficulty !). Apparently the card in my G5 is not compatible with the Mac Pro. I cannot find any official reference to installing an Airport Extreme card in a Mac Pro…just a couple of 'hacks'. Apparently Apple doesn't want users to do this anymore.
    Q1/ What card do I need ?
Q2/ I see 3 antenna connections labelled 1, 2 and 3 on the cables. One is for Bluetooth apparently…but which one ?
Would very much appreciate any help.
    thanks in advance
    PA

    kura,
I ordered my Mac Pro with standard conf for the same reasons you did. I also discovered, as you did, that the newest Mac Pro required a different airport card and that installing the card doesn't appear to be user-friendly. I since found the following web site which presented installation procedure:
    http://meanderingpassage.com/2007/07/18/how-to-installing-an-airport-extreme-car d-in-an-intel-mac-pro/
I also was able to order the correct card (part number MB363Z/A) through a local Mac reseller although I see that it is available from other sources including Amazon (will ship from J&R).
I ordered the card yesterday but the dealer said that it was in stock and would take a few days to arrive so I have yet to actually install it.
Having installed airport cards on a number of other Macs I've owned, it is baffling that Apple would make this so darned difficult and awkward. In retrospect I should have ordered it as a build and had Apple install it but it is what it is.
    Hope this helps -
