I just bought a used IBOOK G4 and have upgraded the system from 10.3 to 10.4.8. The computer did not have Classic on it and I would like to install it. I have the original intall disc 1 of 2 for the IBOOK. How can I install the Classic Mode? Thanks for any help you can give.

Mac OS 9 for Classic will be on your "Mac OS X Install Disc 2". Insert the disc and install the Mac OS 9 Installer Package. This will install a copy of Mac OS 9 on your iBook G4 to run Classic.

I just hired an Apple Authorized Reseller to swap out my iMac's hard drive for a 300 GB model. They put in the new startup volume and installed Tiger, which I updated to 10.4.4.
Problem: I was accustomed to having access to MacOS 9 "Classic" mode before the install. Does the Tiger installation DVD offer a way to install "Classic" onto the hard drive? If so, how?
Also: will the new Intel-driven Macs allow Tiger to launch "Classic" mode at all?

Just out of curiousity I opened my Tiger Install disk 1 with Pacifist. I then used its Find function to search for "Classic Startup". There is a Classic Startup.app on the disk. It was in the Essentials.pkg. The only thing I can think is you don't have an OS 9 System Folder installed. I posted a link in a preceding post to a link referring to this. This is different from the OS X System folder, which says System & has a blue X on its icon. The OS 9 System Folder says "System Folder" with "Folder" capitalized. It has an orange 9 on it.
If I go to HD/System/Library/CoreServices there is a Classic Startup application there. Perhaps you could check & see if this is the same on yours. If this isn't here, something's wrong with your installation. I would contact the reseller.
About not saying anything about OS 9 during installation, I believe one of the screens say something about installing "Additional software". Can't remember now. Maybe the person who reinstalled your OS did not use this option.

Need help re-installing Classic on iBook

My brother recently gave me two old laptops: a clamshell iBook and a second generation iBook. The clamshell doesn't start at all, and I have given it up as a lost cause, but the other iBook seems to work just fine, with one significant exception. Whenever I try to start up Classic, I receive an error message reading "The system software on the startup disk only functions on the original media, not if copied to another drive". My brother swears he didn't do anything to it, and says that it had been in a dresser drawer for more than a year before he gave it to me. He hasn't got any of the disks that came with it.
I've tried using the software recovery disk for the clamshell iBook without any results, and I also tried a pair of AppleCare disks belonging to my mother (System Software Recovery Mac OS 9.0.4 and System Software Recovery for Power Mac G3 and iMac), also without results. The problem is that the installers seem to need Classic to run, and when Classic opens, I get the error message again. Is there any way of installing any version of Classic (preferably 8.6 or up) without already having a functioning version of Classic, or am I completely out of luck?

HI, FortunaMajor, and welcome to Apple Discussions. The error message you've quoted is usually seen when a System Folder has been copied from an installer CD instead of installed by the installer application on the CD. The system Folder on an OS 9 CD is designed only for use in booting the computer from the CD, and not for any other purpose.
Furthermore, the Install and Restore discs that come with any Mac are specific to that Mac model, and generally won't work with any other. You will need duplicates of the disc(s) that came with your more recent iBook or, if that iBook model (one of several) is able to start up in OS 9.1 or 9.2.1, you might be able to use a retail installer disc of one or the other version to install Classic on it. If it's an iBook G4, it can't start in any version of OS 9.
To obtain an OS 9 System Folder for use as Classic only — not for booting — copy the installed System Folder from another Mac that runs properly in Classic mode. Don't copy it from a CD.

HELP - How do you install classic without erasing OS 10.4.8

Please help....I just replaced my PowerBook G4 with a new MacBook and would like to pass the G4 down to my daughter. Most of the games that she uses are in classic from her old Imac. My G4 came with classic but I had to reinstall OSX a while ago and never put classic back in. I can't get it to boot from any OS CD that I have, please advise.

The Classic files for your PowerBook G4 are on the original install DVD that came with it.
A Panther (10.3.x) install set of DVD/CDs most probably?
Anyway, insert this original install disc, and look for "Classic Support" installer, something like that.
Double-click, follow the prompts.
Classic will get installed without changing anything to the existing Tiger installation, just like it would do with the original OS (Panther or Jaguar?).
If you don't find anything like "Classic Support Something":
Some original installations came through a first step of installing an additional software installer (example my iMac G4).
- No problem: In that case, you'll have to double-click the Mac OS X installation icon first, then instead of reinstalling Mac OS X, you'll find your way to a Custom Installation of additional/bundled software.
Proceed to install Classic.
Here too, it'll get installed without modifying your OS (whether it is the original one or your newly installed Tiger).

HI -- I have a MacBook Pro and need to install Classic Mode so my kids can play some of their games ... I looked online, got instructions to go to the disks that came with my computer and that Classic Mode would be there. But it isn't. What am I missing???

There might be a terminology issue here.
Classic is the ability to run OS 9 programs on PPC-based OSX computers. It would not have been included with a MacBook Pro which runs an Intel processor.
Rosetta allows an Intel-based computer to run PPC based *OSX* programs. It will not allow you to run programs that required OS9. This *is* included with your MacBook Pro.
Are these OS9 (or below) games or PPC games for OSX?

Unfortunately I've realized, after looking carefully at that "ID your iBook" article I linked above, that it doesn't enable you to distinguish reliably between some models on the basis of visual cues alone, and some of the ones that could be very hard to tell apart require different minimum versions of OS 9.
So I'm going to propose an alternate approach to getting Classic onto your iBook — one that probably won't cost you anything. This method will NOT enable you to start the iBook up in OS 9. It will only enable you to use OS 9 in Classic mode, that is, within OS X.
Start up the old desktop G3 and check the version of OS 9 that's installed on it. If it's connected to the internet, download the necessary OS 9 updaters (linked in my first reply above) to the G3 and apply them to its installed OS. (If the desktop G3 doesn't have internet access, download the updaters to the iBook while running in OS X, then copy them to the G3's hard drive using a USB flash drive or a burned CD.) When you've finished upgrading the G3's OS to 9.2.2, copy the System Folder from that computer onto the iBook's hard drive. In the Classic pane of System Preferences, designate that System Folder to be used for the Classic environment. OS X will probably tell you it needs to update some files for Classic operation. OK that, and you should soon be ready to use your old applications in Classic mode within OS X.

How do I Install Classic on 10.3.9?

I already have Classic on my wife's computer internal HD. I'm now setting up an external drive from scratch with the DVD install that came with the computer 10.3.7 . + updates 10.3.9
I'm not sure (don't remember) if OS9 classic came with OSX 10.3.7, because it is already on the Internal HD. Now I'm not sure if i installed it myself 2 yrs ago. Anyway it's there.
Now when I installed the OSX 10.3.7 from CD/DVD onto the external HD, the OS9 folder is not in the first level folder. Should I just copy the oS9 folder from the internal to the external and start operating the drive?
Does the classic OS9 comes bundled with the install CD/DVD?
If so, maybe it did not get installed because I may not have had the OS9 box selected, but disk utility on the 10.3.9 (wife's) does not have the OS9 box option like the DU in my computer using 10.2.8.
I'm looking at Disk utility (v10.3) in my computer running OS10.2.8 and I see the OS9 box to select, with MAs OS extended (no Journaled) ... but on my wife's computer, she's running OS 10.3.7 and Disk utility v10.4.4, there are MAc OS extended and MAc OS extended (Journaled) but no OS9 Box .....to be selected!!!! Non existant!
So I cannot re-format the drive with OS9.... I have done the entire install of 10.3.7, repaired permissions, updated software 10.3.9, and repaired permissions again! Should I use my version of Disk utility ? Or is it even worth it to do again?

I'm afraid to do this because I want to do a clean install...... cuz the internal drive keeps freezing on my wife at least 1-2 times daily...so I do not want to copy any problems onto this newly "clean" external drive

I did have the "additional software" CD and OS9 was in there !!

IMac w/OS 10.3, how can I install Classic?

I'm sure you all get this question constantly, and I'm so sorry to be a broken record, but here goes...
I bought my mom a slot-loading indigo iMac, refurbished, from our local Apple certified repair and resell shop. It came with OS 10.3 pre-installed, but no Classic environment and, of course, no disks.
I would like to have some version of OS 9 on it to run some older apps that my aged parent apparently cannot be happy without. Today I popped in my retail copy of OS 10.4 which has OS 9.2 on it, but I'll be darned the iMac wouldn't read the DVD at all and spit it back out at me. The nervy little Mac! I wasn't trying to boot with the disk either.
Sooo, I poked around the dusty studio and found a retail copy of OS 10.1. In the box was a copy of OS 9.1 that shipped with 10.1.
What is my best plan of attack to get Classic on this little iMac without compromising the existing OS 10.3? I'm nervous about messing up 10.3 because I can't reinstall it. I personally jumped from 10.1 to 10.4, and failed to buy 10.3, darnitall. I read in another post the option of making a copy of an existing 9.2 system folder, which I can do from this my trusty dual G4 running 10.4 and 9.2. Does that actually work, and do I only need the 9 system folder? Or are there other mysterious files in obscure locations that also need to copy over?

Insert the Mac OS 9.1 CD, restart the computer with the C key held down, locate the hard disk in the Finder, open the folders System, Library, and look at the CoreServices folder. If that item has a smiling Mac icon, drag the item System inside it to the desktop. Either way, install Mac OS 9 normally, and if you moved that item, put it in its original location.

How To Install Classic?

How do I install Classic on my iBook G4 (1Ghz)? I already have 10.4.10 installed. I have the Mac OS X Tiger Install DVD, but cannot find Classic to install.
I booted from the DVD, but there were no options to install Classic. Is Classic not available for Tiger? That would really be a major problem, because I have thousands of files that I need to acces, and cannot get to otherwise .... !!

What type of files are you wanting to access? I ask this because I don't know of many older files types that can't be opened by OS X applications, including Appleworks. Almost every commercial app was moved to OS X long ago and are capable of opening their respective file types.
You also need to know that new Macs don't support OS 9 Classic at all. So if you ever buy a new Mac you'll need to convert those files anyway.

How do you Install iBooks on iPad 1?

I restored my old iPad version1 to factory settings and gave it to my father in law. I then let him start a new apple id. I was showing him how to download from the app store, and tried installing iBooks, but I am unable to Install a version of ibooks that is compatible with iOS 5.1.1. I just get an error message telling me that iBooks 3 is incompatible with the iPad, since it cannot run iOS 7.
How can I install a compatible iBooks version for iPad 1 iOS 5.1.1 from the app store? (For a new install on new apple Id)
I realize if I use my own apple id and restore my old backup, when I update an existing app, iTunes will ask if I want to update to an older version, but I don't want to do that.
Is Apple forcing me to junk this old ipad by not allowing me to install iPad apps if they have been updated to version 7? If so, you are making a good case for not buying any further Apple products. Microsoft is still supporting Windows XP, 12 years after it was released. My iPad is just over 3 years and now it's ready for the junk pile?

I started my iMac from this CD, but it doesn't show

I'm running it everyday on 2 other Macs I've upgraded
from 10.4.9.
Unfortunatelly, I didn't keep a written receipe
of how I managed it (shame on me!, and anyway it was
a long and non human path from 10.2 to 10.3 to 10.4
through all the updates).

Normally I'd say do what you just did. In fact, that's how I've installed Classic on older PPC Macs in the past.
Is this OS 9.1 CD either a generic (white) CD or the CD which shipped with the iMac?
I can't tell if its a generic or specific one, because I always
bought any new version of the system. Nothing specifying which
kind of CD is written on this CD. It's a mostly white CD with
a huge orange 9.
The white OS 9 CD is usually a generic 9.x CD. Later versions are usually 9.1 or 9.2. The CD which ships with a Mac is usually coloured: green or gray or blue or some other colour.
I found a workaround: I copied the "System Folder" from the
last backup on MacOS X 10.3.9 on "/". I then started up "System
Preferences" and "Classic" was among them and I've been able to
select the freshly copied "System Folder" to start Classic
from.
Copying over the _OS 9_ System Folder will usually work, so long as you don't copy the System Folder from a CD. Copying the _OS X_ System folder (note small 'f') will not work.
After a few tests all my files necessary to make my work
were again available and opened with the right application.
Nice to know that all is well.

I do have disc for 10.2, but I hate to drop it down a system.

Installing classic illustrator and photoshop to Mac os Tiger

How can I install classic illustrator and photoshop applications to Mac os Tiger
Mac OS X (10.4)

Illustrator 10 and Photoshop 7 were the first OSX version, the next version of each they called CS (for Creative Suite, they were really pushing buy the Suite of 4 or 5 Adobe programs which cost big bucks) and the latest versions are CS2. I've heard of many having problems with CS2 so I haven't upgraded. Both Illustrator CS and Photoshop CS work well in Tiger.
But!!... on an Intel Mac programs need to be Universal versions, specifically designed to run on Intel Macs, older version can run but will open in to an emulation mode, Rosetta, that runs much slower, you will be running at least 50% slower than on a G5. But it's not like Classic, you won't even know when Rosetta is running.
And, apparently there are problems converting Illustrator and Photoshop to Universal and it's going to take a while. The rumor is that CS2 will not be updated, you'll have to wait for CS3 and there is no planned release date for that yet.
On the other hand, I read a recent article that said if you install Windows XP on an Intel Mac (Apple has a free program called Boot Camp that will do this but you need to buy XP), then the XP version of Photoshop will run really fast, faster than most boxes running XP. Oooo, the irony!
Anyway, there is a program that allows you to run a Classic emulation on the Intel Macs but I can't find my bookmark on it so you'll have to do a web search (or someone can post it).
I'm assuming you already have the Classic versions. You'd probably be better off getting the Classic emulation and running those until Adobe upgrades to Universal software. Kind of a waste to spend the bucks on brand new versions of Illustrator and Photoshop now when the versions you need are probably a year away.

I found out that I still need Classic (Mac OS 9.1).
How can I install Classic?
The message below is what appeared when I tried to install a software.
"There is no valid system software to start classic. Please consult the user documentation about installing the appropriate system software."
P.S. I used to use Mac OS 9.1 but installed Mac OS X on top of Classic.

Unfortunately with lack of your information one does not know where to begin. Procedures need to be followed carefully or things such as a reformat of the HD may be in order to install Mac OS 9. Mac OS 10 can be installed with or without Mac OS 9's HD drivers however Mac OS 9 may not install from a CD without the drivers. There is also Mac OS 9 .dmg installs but those are machine specific and may not permit one to boot into Mac OS 9.
Other than going back through your documentation and understanding what went wrong may take some time. But you will understand proper procedures better, that way.
