How do I install Lion on both SSD and HDD in my new iMac 27"

When I try to install Lion on my new iMac 27", it offers to install it on either my 256 SSD or on my 1TB HDD. I haven't gone ahead with the installation, in case it can't be installed on the bigger disc (i.e., the 1TB HDD). I'd be very grateful for any advice.

Are you saying that you copied your system or installer from your laptop onto a thumb drive?
Please be specific: you really can't copy the recovery partition by itself because it's hidden - you can use Apple's recovery assistant to create a bootable startup on a thumb drive with which you can boot your system and then download/install. But, I believe that method requires the same machine ID to work.
IF you have the full installer, you need to boot up from another drive (the installer may not be bootable) and then direct it to another Mac.
So where do you want to install it? And exactly what is it that you have on that thumb drive?
If you just want to install Lion on another Mac, you can simply download a fresh copy from MAS.

  • How can I install only OS on SSD and have the HDD only for apps?

I am looking to buy an SSD and install it in my CD area of the macbook pro with an adapter. But I wanted to know if it's possible to instal only my OS on the SSD and have the HDD only for Apps/Software....Is this possible and if so how can I do this?

I suppose you could do this by just installing Mountain Lion onto your SSD, and then move your applications folder and documents to the HDD.
But I would be wary of doing this because:
It seems like it would defeat the purpose of having a SSD, that is to make your computer fast. The computer would have to switch back and forth between the SSD and the HDD. Sounds like that would unnecessarily complicate things.
I like to keep things simple. I think the software engineers at Apple know what they are doing and I just keep things installed simply and the way they intend them. Then they seem to work. I put a SSD in my laptop about a year ago and it works perfectly. I haven't had a problem with my computer in a very, very long time.
This doesn't mean that you can't have a lot of files stored on a secondary drive somewhere, whether it is on an internal or external drive. But I'd keep the system software and apps where they belong, on the drive where the installer puts them.
And this doesn't mean that you can't try your plan and see how it works.

  • How do i use both ssd and hdd drives on macbook pro together

have a mid 2012 macbook pro 15 inch. I replaced hdd drive with ssd drive and put hdd drive in optic bay. Was wondering what the best way to use both together is

Use your SSD for your system, applications, working projects, as a scratch disk (if you're editing photos or video, for example) and you can use the HD to store you user files (Documents) and infrequently accessed files.
The only disadvantage that I see with a setup like yours is backups. You can use clones to backup both drives, and Time Machine to - at least - backup your boot drive, but you're going to run the risk of losing data if you don't clone your HD. That's a minimum of two clones for one computer (I shouldn't be one to be talking about excessive clones, though, as I keep three clones of my SSD, one clone of my 2TB 'working' drive, and two Time Machine backups of my SSD).
But that's the way I'd treat the drive in the opti-bay - just as an 'internal' external drive.

  • Bootcamp using both SSD and HDD

I have just purchased an iMac, with a both a SSD(256Gb) and a HHD (1Tb) and am looking to install windows 7 using bootcamp. I am planning to install the windows OS partition with half of the SSD space, but how do I also half my HDD to use with windows aswell?

you adjust the disk partitions when you setup bootcamps you can set more then 1 hd's space into ntfs

  • Can I install CS6 on the SSD and HDD of the same computer without losing licence?

I just upgraded my Macbook Pro, Mac OS X 10.6.8 with a new SSD.
I am not sure how smooth and errorless my original HDD OS X has been running, so instead of using Set Up Assistant or the Migration Assistant, I did a fresh installation of OS X on the SSD. Now I want to either individually carry all apps to the SDD or, more favorably, put a fresh install on the SSD.
If I try to simply install the CS6 from my downloaded install software, I suppose it will ask me for the serial number. As far as I know I can install the CS6 on two separate personal computers. I want to save my second option for the iMac I want to buy later on. So how can I do this installation on the SSD?
And, once I do the installation, I will keep working from the SSD, but still want to keep the HDD version as a backup until I am sure the new SSD works flawless for some months.
Same question will go for LR4.

on you hdd, open cs6 programs and click help>deactivate.
you're then ok for two more installations/activations.

How do I install bootcamp so I half both my ssd and hdd for windows and lion?

Sorry about that one. There are THREE not just two, about SSDs, and the iMac SSD + hdd one.... well  that one was private (not sure why).
Most questions have been asked/answered, multiple more than once, times, and therefore: public bookmarks and search please. (some gets asked almost daily, a few multiple times in one DAY of all things).
I'd like to see pdf guide and error messages, faq and how to articles re-written, updated, and checked for errors.
www.apple.com/support/bootcamp is where I usually send people to seek out the pdf and do some readiing and backups. you will need backup no matter what.
Windows won't install iwth two drives/devices with GPT so you have to remove or reformat the data drive for now.

I own two I macs. I bought and installed Lion on one computer. How can I install Lion on the other compute without additional charge?

If it's the same email address Apple registration on both, use the 2nd computer and go to the App Store and find Lion. If different, use the second computer but log in to the App store with the address you used on the first go round. The buy button should instead say install. Then go through the same process again.

How do I install Lion on more than one Mac?  As I have a MacBook Pro and a iMac?

Purchase Lion on one of the machines.
Log in to the MAS with the other machine, using the same Apple ID you originally bought Lion with. Go to the Purchased Tab and Lion should be available for download. It should say Install.
It's possible that you will be asked for credit information as a form of verifying who you are.

USB on Intel Macs has always supported booting, that is what MacBook users have had to deal with. With a Mac Pro you have four internal drive bays, Firewire, and all of those are more suited and capable.

  • We are a small design studio how do we install lion on all machines

We are a small design studio with 8 imacs. How do we install Lion on all 8. Do we have to download the installer 8 times! at 4gb a download that is a lot of bandwidth. Or can one person sign in to the App store and download then distribute to all 8 machines?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

You might want to peruse the licensing agreement for Lion, available here:
    http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/
I have absolutely no experience with commercial or volume licensing; but, as a business, you might want to pay special attention to para. 2B and C. The terms are not the same as they are for a single user.

  • How do I install lion and format the hard drive?

How do I install lion and format the hard drive, as though this was a new mac.

If your Mac is a 2011 model and originally came with Lion Pre-Installed by Apple then you can use the Internet Recovery HD system to Wipe/Erase the Complete drive and Re-Install Lion.
If it is an older model, even and early 2011 model, that did NOT come with Lion Pre-Installed by Apple you can not sell or give it away with Lion installed on it. You have to install the original version of OS X on it.

  • How do I install LION on a separate HD and keep Mtn. Lion on Macbook.

I am having problems with Mountain Lion and need help with installing and using LION on a separate hard drive.
    Please help.

If your Mac Retina originally came with Lion Pre-Installed then you have one option.
That is to use the Internet Recovery system to download the original Lion version that was installed on your Retina MBP.
If your Retina came with Mountain Lion Pre-Installed there is NO option to install Lion on your system and any version of Lion available for download does not have the correct driver package to work on the newest MBP models, any of them.
To use Internet Recovery at boot hold down the Command+Option+r keys until you see a spinnin globe in the center of the screen. That will boot the system from the Online, Internet, Apple Recovery system servers which will be for the original version of OS X installed on your Mac. Have an extternal drive connected before you start this. Select Reinstall Mac OS X from the page tha is displayed and point it to the external drive you have connected. Lion will be downloaded to that drive and when it is finished downloading the install will reboot the system and start the install on the external.
Good Luck, Best Wishes and I hope this has helped.

  • SSD and HDD Installed but it runs super slow? Please Help!

Hi, I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2 GHZ Intel Core i7
8gb of ram. My hard drive died in my mac and I decided to replace it with an SSD and installed an HDD in the optical bay following Ifixit instructions. I booted into internet recovery and installed Mountain Lion (as it would not let me do a straight Yosemite install from a flash drive I had made on my gf's macbook, because it couldn't authenticate). After booting up and declining the usual iCloud prompts, I rebooted and installed Yosemite from the USB. It took a while, but eventually i booted up.
I moved my home folder to the HDD a 7200rpm Western Digital Black, which is in the optical bay, (the SSD is a Samsung 340 Pro and is installed in the Drive bay). Everything appears to be functioning, but it's slower that it had ever been using Yosemite on the HDD that had died. It take 35-40 seconds just to open System Preferences. I have used First aid on both drives via the Recovery and repaired permissions on both. I have reset the ram using option-command-r-p. I have booted into Safe Mode and Restarted the computer multiple times. Just opening a second safari window causes the spinning wheel to go for ten seconds or so. If anyone knows anything I can do, please help! I'm at a loss as to what I can do to fix this.
I'm really not sure what is going on. It seems to take a very long time to load a website, but after using safari for a bit, the app doesn't seem to have a problem responding to commands, just takes way too long to load anything. System preferences is all of a sudden crazy snappy, but is giving me the spinning rainbow wheel when I try and click on a pane saying "Could not load Users & Groups preference pane." After I click "okay" and try again it loads right up. Grrr.

    Etrecheck report if it helps:
    Problem description:
Running super slow randomly with a newly installed SSD and HDD.  Home Folder is on the HDD.
