USB on Intel Macs has always supported booting, that is what MacBook users have had to deal with. With a Mac Pro you have four internal drive bays, Firewire, and all of those are more suited and capable.

When major OS versions are released I wipe a drive completely and install the new OS and my apps. I do not use Migration assistant. I install clean.. from scratch. Over the years this has helped maintain a very stable OS and eliminated 90% of slowdowns, reinstalls, and troubleshooting.
But.. how do I do that with Lion? I do not want to install 10.6. I want to use a bare drive and install 10.7.
Do I download 10.7 burn the download to disc then use that? Will the download allow burning a boot disc?

Unable to install Lion on new hard drive.

My brothers laptop hard drive died so I am fixing it for him. I've replaced the hard drive, created a bootable USB Lion install by following http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/08/make-a-bootable-mac-os-x-10-7-lion-installer-from -a-usb-flash-drive/.
I plug in the USB, hold down option, select the USB drive, and I get the wheel spinning and apple logo. After two or so minutes it turns into:
Does anyone have any idea as to why I am getting this? I've tried changing which USB hub it uses, tried redoing the USB, used a different USB, verified the md5sum (145dc094527a8d5f5f601c7fa53d7577) all to no avail.

Most likely you have a non-functioning system. It could be because the flash drive was not partitioned and formatted properly before you created the system on it or a flaw in your cloning. Not knowing which specific model you have it could also be that the system you cloned is not able to boot the computer because the computer requires a different version of Lion.

This is assuming you downloaded the installer from the app store, and didn't just install it onto your mac. If all you have done is install it on your mac. Go to your purchases Lion should show up. Then click download.

Lotus notes is incompatible with 10.8. The app store will not let me redownload lion even though i paid for it. I do have the "installESD.dmg" and I get the message that the new system is newer so it won't install it. Any suggestions? I need to install 10.7 on an external drive as school starts next week and I have to do a bootcamp prior to learn the school's sytem of doing things. TIA. How can I install Lion (10.7.5) on new iMacs 13,1

I have software and printers that will not work with Mountain Lion. Have partitioned and installed Lion on new partition using an older Mac as a slave and booting the new iMac as target disk. The Lion software installed, but now when booting Lion, partition just hangs with ghostbuster sign. Same with Lions recovery partition.
Why Apple any work arounds? Have not yet tried external drive with Lion installed. Any ideas appreciated.

New models that came with Mountain Lion pre-installed cannot run Lion. There is no known backward compatibility.
I suppose you could try running Lion in emulation using VM software like Parallels or VM Fusion.

Install new drive, insert OS X DVD disc in DVD drive and then start the system. Hold down either the C key or the option key. C key will boot the system from the DVD drive, Option key will bring up a boot selection screen and then give it about 30+ second to read the DVD disc and select that.
Once the OS X install disc loads select Utilities from the menu bar nd then Disk Utility. In disk utility select the drive model number and size entry, the top most entry, on the left and the partition tab. In the partition tab select One partition from the partition layout area and then give it the name Macintosh HD, Format Mac OS Extended and then click the Options button and make sure it is set to GUID as the partition table. Once that is done close the Options screen and click the Apply button.
Once that is finished exit disk utility and proceed with the install of OS X.
Once that is all done the system will reboot to OS X on the internal drive. You then insert the Applications DVD and install all of those or the ones you want leaving out the ones you don't want.
Once that is done run Software update under the Apple Logo icon in the menu bar. If you have any problems with installing the iLife app from the Applications DVD you might need the installer update which should be available from running software update first.

How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive. Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure. You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive

3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume. Click on the Restart button. You should boot from the new drive. Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.
It's possible to make a USB flash drive installer, but it's not simple. First you need to capture a Lion installer application: Downloading Hardware Specific Lion Installers.
Then use the following procedure:
Make Your Own Lion Installer
1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that you can use without having to re-download Lion.

I have the MacIntosh volume and the Boot Camp partition only. I know that when I installed Lion, I had to go through a whole back-up and recovery of Windows and then re-format the drive.
The tech at the Apple Store had a previous life as a MSCE and was very helpful. I believe he even said that I should not have htis problem with Mountain Lion which is why they gave me the flash with it onboard. I was in the process of starting a new job when I went to Lion, so I have waited to do this next and probably last upgrade to this old MBP since I doubt Apple will support this MBP in Maverick.
I do not have another installation, so that is not an option. I will try to create an external, I have plenty of hard drives around and see if I can get it done that way.
