How do I install Postscript Fonts (.pfb) in OS X

Howdy,
I'm a recent switcher from Vista to OS X, and I cannot for the life of me get any of my .pfb PostScript fonts to work on OS X? Its suppose to have built in support for it Like Windows but I am either doing something wrong or that was a lie!
All I have unfortuntely is the .pfb and .pfm files for my PostScript fonts.. do I need any other files? The pfb's on their own worked in Vista, so I'm just assuming that it should be the same for OS X right? I tried imported the fonts via the Font Book but I cannot select .pfb files, so I tried dragging the pfb and pfm files into Library/Fonts and still to no avail?
Any ideas on how I can get these fonts to work? or am I screwed?
ta
Steve

No, PC and Mac Type 1 fonts are not interchangeable. A Google search on "pfb mac" will give you plenty of hits. Here is one idea for conversion:

  • Font Book: Installed postscript Fonts don't always appear in Font Book list

    Greetings,
I was helping a user the other day with Font Book. I was showing him how to add/enable fonts into Font Book when I noticed a problem I had never seen before. Before I get started, the fonts in question are from the Adobe 7 Font Folio library. There were newly installed by me from the original disk, and known not to be corrupt. I also know that that Postscript fonts are an accepted font format in Tiger.
That said, when adding.installing a particular font using Font Book, it would not "Appear" in the Font Book" list of fonts. I would attemp to, again add/enable the font (by selecting it from the Adobe Library) and still it would not appear in the Font Book list with the other installed fonts. This would happen to any font that I tried to install. Once this happenend to a specific font, I could no longer get that specific font to install.
I removed the Font Book .plist - no luck. I also rebooted - no luck.
Obviously, no application was able to recognize any of the fonts that would not install.
It was as if Font Book would not recognize any font that I was trying to add/enable.
Could this be a corrupted cache issue, or .plist problem? Could this be a permissions related issue? What did work finally was to add the font to the "Computer" set, where it would be avaialbe to all users. But I could not get the font to install into the "User" set. Weird.
Also, What is the significance of these four fonts:
    HelveLTMM
    Helvetica LT MM
    Times LT MM
    TimesLTMM
These fonts above are part of the default package that is loaded into the /System/Library/Fonts
Is it safe to replace these with Postscript version from my Adobe 7 Font Folio collection?
I have read most of the font related tutorials and articals.

    where did
you get the information about pre-92 Adobe postscript
    fonts being uncompatible?
Oh, sure, it's hard enough for me to remember things these days and now you want me to remember where I learned them from?? geez... [gone lookin' ... okay, back] It was, as I vaguely recalled, on the Adobe site, re troubleshooting in OS X, in a list of "do this to solve your problems": "Make sure that you are using the latest version of the font... If the font's creation date is prior to 1992, a new version of the font may be available." The only Type 1's that have given me any problems were, all three of them, older than 92, and in troubleshooting something here a few weeks ago, that turned out to be a problem for someone else, too.
But all of the Tiger font
research that I have done suggests that Adobe
    Postscript fonts were acceptable.
Yes, well... Type 1's are supported. It seems that some older ones are a little funky (not in a design sense....)
Ideally, what fonts can be removed from Tiger from
the System/Libray/Fonts folder? I know that all four
of the MM's (Helvetica LTand Times LT), Lucida
Grande, Geneva, Keyboard, Last Resort, and Monoco
must stay, but what about the others?
You also need a real Helvetica - that is, not the MM version. You can replace the system's Helvetica with one of your own, but there must be an available Helvetica around at all times.
Then there's AquaKana (two of them, regular and bold). They're not on Apple's official "do not remove" list, but there's some anecdotal evidence of its being needed. It's "real" name begins with a period, so it doesn't appear in any menu, so it's not going to hurt anything if you leave it there.
In stripping down nonessential fonts, lots of people just remove everything from the Library/Fonts folder, but I think it's good to leave the basic most common web fonts available: Comic Sans, Georgia, Trebuchet, Verdana, Times New Roman. This keeps web pages looking the way they're supposed to - and they shouldn't conflict with anything that's being really designed!
This is assuming that the fonts
being used are not damaged and "Pass" Font Book's
    validation test.
The assumption within that assumption is false: Font Book's validation is pretty iffy. I think the only reason we don't see it as REALLY iffy is because fonts, on the whole, are pretty solid in OS X (your current experience to the contrary). I've installed fonts (properly) that flew through the automatic-on-install validation but failed when I used the Validate Font command afterwards. I've had fonts that pass both the on-install and specific after-install validation but get a Bad Font warning dialog when being re-enabled after a disabling. (And I didn't use the font in between... ) Who knew Font Book did any validating when you re-enable fonts??
This is what I would do:
    (Not necessarily in this order)
    1. Trash Font Book .plist
    2. Trash all Font Cache's from all three libraries
    (System, Computer, and User folders)
    3. Reboot
    4. Delete problem fonts from User and Computer
Libraries and reinstall using Font Book.
Please tell me if this strategy is ill-advised, and
what the better course of action might be.
None of it is ill-advised. I would add starting up in Safe Mode to see if the problems exist there as part of the narrow-down-the-problem stage. Same goes for setting up a separate user account and see how things are behaving there. (Yikes... did you try that yet??)
In addition, there are some special things to do when it's Office apps having the problem, or something going on with Adobe's application fonts folder...
Also, Zaph Dingbats is acting up as well. I removed
the .dfont version that was in the system folder, and
replaced it with the Adobe Font Folio Postscript
version (ITC Zaph Dingbats) that I loaded into Font
Book User/Library/Fonts folder. Now that I think
about it, that specific font has been around for
along time, and may very well be pre-1992. Hmmm...
Can you further define "acting up" ? In addition to the ZD dfont from the system, I've been using/testing ITC ZD from Adobe with no problems. It's version 2.0 with copyright dates of 1985 through 1987.
A lot to respond to. My apologies.
No problem. You caught me on a night when I'm too tired for real work but not so far gone I can't do this (tho I'm soon on my way, bleary-eyed, to get a fix of Sudoku puzzles).

  • How do I install new fonts with a Mac?I

I am using Fireworks 8 on a Mac and can't figure out how to install new fonts.  I've added the new fonts to the Font Book, and they show up  in other applications such as Adobe Illustrator, but not Fireworks.  Does anybody have any suggestions?  Thanks!

You must restart Fireworks after you add new fonts, as far as I know.
Once you restart it, you should see all new installed fonts!
    Hope this helps?
PS Hint: I think a future version of Fireworks will show fonts almost immediately after they're installed... At least, I hope so!

  • Cannot install PostScript fonts

I have just got the G5 with Tiger (10.4.4). I tried to add my PostScript font into the Font Book and nothing happened. I tried to put whole folder in it and just an empty folder appeared (more over all the folders such as "Classic, Fixed Width..." disappeared).
I tryed to use Suitcase Fusion from Extensions and even this program did not want to load the fonts - it can see the files but it's like it would not be the font files.
The problem is that the fonts which I am trying to add are working on 10.4.2 with absolutely no problems.
I tried to upgrade to 10.4.6 but that did not solve it. I even install the system again - no solution
I am desperate the last option - if you won't help me - for me is to format the discs.

I SOLVED THE PROBLEM - it was on my side. I have a backup of my files on the web server and I put the folder with the fonts ther. Problem was that I did not zipped it so when I downloaded it to my computer, somethig was probably changed so that the Mac did not recognized the files. Now I have the fonts from CD and all work 100%.
Seems like the OS X will be good system finaly

  • How come my installed system font is not working???

Basically they seem to be back peddling a little on one of the main selling features that they advertise to designers, not the the best response really, it is apparently a bug?

Problem with fonts in Muse on a PC?
    May 16, 2012 4:08 AM
I have created a site in Muse and everything is fine when the file is opened on my mac where it was created. My customer has brought a muse subscription as they wanted to maintain it in house, but they are on a PC. Muse was installed on the PC fine.
I have now given them the Muse file and it opens up ok in the PC Muse version apart from copy in Myriad Pro Bold (I assume as it's not a standard system font, it uses a substitute). The body copy displays ok as it's just Myriad Pro and that seems to be a system font.
So, they have purchased Myriad Pro Bold font and installed the font to their fonts library on the PC (WINDOWS 7), but Muse will still not recognise it when the Muse file opens and it also doesn't appear in the systems fonts list in Muse? Does anyone know how to import a font into Muse on a PC so that they can view the site without it using a substitute font for Myriad Pro Bold?

Does the new font appear in any other program on their computer? The font should appear as "Myriad Pro". Then they would need to select the bold option on Muse's toolbar. Beware that Myriad will be rendered as an image, not live text. This will hurt the web site in search results. Consider using either a Typekit font or one of the 'web safe' fonts for maximum visibility of your client's site. There's no point in making a great site if nobody can find it.

Yes, it appears in Word, which is why we couldn't figure out why it wouldn't at least appear in the system fonts section in muse? This bold version of the font is mainly used for navigation to control the look, so we chose that to use as a graphic, so I understand your point regarding searches, maybe the body copy can be altered to a more web friendly font, but this displays fine and appears in the menu as Myriad Pro, but it doesn't help us with the navigation display that we'd like to keep in bold and control the look of. Even with the font loaded in the library it dosen't appear as a sub weight of Myriad bold, so do you think we done something wrong to get Muse to recognise it is there, sorry I still don't understand why Muse hasnt added it to the system fonts library?

As the font appears correctly in Word, this topic becomes less of a 'general question about using Muse' and more of a bug report. http://forums.adobe.com/community/muse/adobe_muse_bugs

Ok thanks, as I really need to address this issue for my customer, as I recommended that they buy a subscription to Muse to edit their website content in-house and one of the main selling features of Muse for them is that you can use any font and embed it into the website and it obviously isn't quite working on Muse for PC and for which they are now paying monthly. So can I report it somewhere asap, is there an area where you do this or do you log it as a bug now?

.pfm/.pfb are Windows Type I fonts and cannot be used by OS X. You must acquire Mac versions or convert them to TTF or another kind of font which the Mac can use. Apps that might do this are Fontlab and Fontforge.

  • How do i install missing fonts into my trial?

Hi I have three fonts that I want to use in my company formats that are missing in my trial indesign download. They are Arial MT Pro Light, ITC Franklin Gothic and ITC Franklin Gothic Demi.
How do I get these? Can I do it within the trial or do I need to pay for full licence or fonts?
Are fonts on my mac or in Indesign?

All three of those fonts are sans-serifs, and I would bet that whoever did the original probably didn't have enough weights in any single sans family. If you have other faces, like Helvetica or Helvetica Neue, for example, or even Myriad Pro (which comes with ID) in a large enough collection to include light through very bold weights, you can take a look at font substitution and see if the look is satisfactory.

  • Life after Suitcase Fusion. How do I install a font manager to Tiger?

I just rid my Dual Processor G5 Power Mac w/ Tiger 4.7 upgraded system (gasp) of Suitcase Fusion, (say no more). I need to install Font Agent Pro 3 or FontExplorer X.

G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Running Adobe Creative Suite

I guess my real gripe is that why? would Apple remove a feature from the OS that was there for more than 15 years...
A very good question. There are a lot of pre OS X features that have slowly worked their way back in, such as spring loaded folders. But why this feature still hasn't reappeared this far into OS X's development is puzzling and frustrating.
I'd never heard of Font Smasher before, so looked it up and downloaded the demo. Being from the same folks who produce Font Agent Pro, it's probably pretty nice software. Rather pricey though at $49 for a single usage application. Especially for someone in your position who would have to purchase more than a few copies in order to spread them around the shop. I'll stick with using Font Doctor for now since I already have it.
But yes, it drives me a bit nuts that we still can't do this as easily as we could in OS 7 - 9. A copyright issue Apple had to conform to? Not very plausible since we could do this up until OS X. About all you can do is give Apple feedback and ask that we get this function back. I'm sure you know as well as I some of the mishmashed suitcases clients send that need to be cleaned up in order to use them.
The need to do able to get into font suitcases will be around for a long time, so it's not a minor thing.
