How do I install Samba 3.4.6 on my MacBook Pro?

I'm having many odd problems associated with using Samba at work (where PCs and linux boxes rule & Macs are shunned). I hear the samba version that ships with the latest OS X (I have a 17" MacBook Pro running 10.6.2) is kind of out of date and was hoping to install the latest Samba version 3.4.6 available via:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16066/samba
http://us1.samba.org/samba/
However, despite someone advising me (in a MacUpdate forum post) to use MacPorts and Porticus along with the implication that would 'just work', I can't for the life of me figure out how to install the latest version into my Mac. There is an installer for most other platforms, just not for the Mac.
Is there some kind soul out there who can help me please?

Thanks - I'll try my luck in the Windows forum. I just figured I was in much the same sort of domain as with Apple's X11 i.e. the X11 that shipped with snow leopard was very rough around the edges and the latest xquartz release (http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/Releases) runs rings around Apple's version and it comes with an installer that replaces Apple's X11.
What is "run rings around"? I use X11 every day and it works fine. X11 is one of those things that is easily misconfigured and poorly understand. People like to replace it hoping that the "new" version will replace the "buggy" version that Apple ships with the OS.
But while I'm here, I may as well state the most irritating issue I have with Samba. If I connect to my own linux box via samba in the Finder then I can certainly see and edit all my files etc. However, if I select a file and do cmd-D for copy or do a cmd-N to create a new folder then I get messages saying that there is no disk space left. That is simply not true, and I can get around these limitations by e.g. editing a file a want to duplicate and doing a save-as in the same directory. The new file is created without any complaints about the disk being full.
That sounds like a misconfiguration on the Linux side. Most users of 10.6.2 have no problem duplicating files and/or creating new folders.

    Hi Armin.S,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your question. If you are asking about the system requirements for running various versions of Windows under Bootcamp, or just more generally how to set up Bootcamp on your Mac, you may find the following articles/pages helpful:

  • How do I install windows 7 drivers correctly on my macbook pro retina?

I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) twice now, and each time I get on, none of the bootcamp drivers seem to be installed correctly.  This means I can't access the internet because a network adapter isn't present, and I can't play games because the NVIDIA drivers aren't there.  I've seen other people have had this problem in the past, but their fix was to download bootcamp 3.x from Apple's download site, but obviously that doesn't work now as the version is newer.
Does anyone know how to correctly install Windows so this doesn't happen, or how to get the drivers installed correctly?
Thank you very much for your time

For 2 reasons, and they are about the hardware.
    1) Apple/Mac and BC restrict the way you use the computer. Maybe not for you but for me. It does not allow you to create any other parttitions for Windows to use. You can't even re-partition the BC partition into 2 drives. That will HOSE the Windows system and maybe the OS X part.
    2) Apple/Mac does not allow the use of all the hardware. You can not use both graphic cards. switch between them. Windows Must use the descrete graphics adapter which cause the system to run hotter. This is a limitation imposed by Apple as with Reall Windows PCs that have both the Interl embedded and add-on descrete graphics you can switch between them.
Actually BC 4 has been out since Lion shipped on new Mac's. BC 4 also restricted the installation of Windows to just Win 7, no more XP. Which was what you could do with Snow Leopard and BC 3

  • How do I install/upgrade iWork 2005 on my new MacBook Pro / Mountain Lion?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro (converted back from Windows) and installed an old version of iWork (2005) I purchased years ago, hoping to upgrade it. It didn't install properly as it only shows a folder in Finder/Apps, with a couple of docs in the folder and doesn't show up as an app for Upgrade. The guy that upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion at the Apple Store told me this should work.
       1) How do I install iWork 2005 on my MacBook Pro / Mountain Lion?
       2) How do I upgrade it without having to purchase a new copy?
    Thanks!

You cannot link any version of iWork installed from a retail disk or trial to the Mac App Store.
You install iWork '05 on your new Mac just as you always have, making sure you have the serial number to enter. But the iWork apps are very reasonably priced on the Mac App Store & have come a very long way in 7 years. And now Numbers is available for spreadsheets.

  • How do I install Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 on new MacBook Pro without DVD drive?

I just purchased my first MacBook Pro and am trying to get everything set up and installed. I purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 and retrieved my serial number and have the redemption code -- but I can't figure out how to install Photoshop without a DVD drive. The Photoshop package I purchased only provides DVDs and I don't have a DVD drive. Is there a website I can go to to install Photoshop and enter my serial number or redemption code?

Have you tried downloading the trial version and using your serial
    number to activate it?
The trial version is a complete product and can be activated by
    inserting the valid serial number.
    Good luck.

  • How do I install The Sims 3 on my new macbook pro?

I jsut got my MacBook Pro and im still learning how to run everything but i cant figure out how to install my Sims 3 game. I put it in and it acts like it is going to bring up an installer window like my old Dell used to do but then it stops and nothing happens. Where do i need to go to download the game?

Go to the top menu bar where it says Finder (if it doesnt, click anywhere on your desktop and it should show up)
Click on "Finder" Go to "Preferences", then under the "General" tab where it sais "Show these items in the desktop" make sure the option "CDs, DVDs and Ipods" is checked.
Close that window and reinsert the game disc.
It should show up on your desktop, a CD icon, just click on that icon.

  • How can I install epson stylus nx625 driver on my Macbook Pro?

I've spent a frustrating few hours today going back and forth between Apple tech support and Epson tech support and still do not have a solution to what should be a simple problem.  I got a new MacBook Pro as a work computer and want to install my home printer on it so that I can print when working from home.  The printer is an Epson Stylus NX 625 all in one.
The directions on Epson's website indicate that the only way to install is use the "Software Update" function by going to the Apple icon on the upper left corner.  When doing this, the system looks for an update and finds nothing.  Printer is connected to the MacBook  via usb cable and is also on my wireless network.  I called Apple tech support and they said they don't have a driver for this Epson device and I should contact Epson.  I called Epson tech support and they say that they don't even have the driver for this device on their website because "Apple has signed off on ownership of this driver and only they can deliver this to you via their software update".   Can anyone help?
I am running Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8.1
    Thanks for any assistance provided.

  • How can I install my CS2 upgrade to my new macbook pro?

Help! I have a new Macbook pro and an old upgrade of CS2 photoshop (upgraded from Photoshop 6). I bought these two for a PC and was told in the Mac shop that I could run them on my fancy new machine..........apparently not, it won't install classic photoshop 6 as presumably it's too old. I also have CS2 Indesign but can't find the install button to press for that either......Am I screwed? I can't afford new programmes.

CS2 is the oldest version that can be upgraded to CS5. You may want to do that now before you lose the opportunity when CS6 comes out. You can upgrade and crossgrade to CS5 for Mac.
    Another thought...
I run CS2 for Windows on Linux through Wine. It works fine. You could probably install Wine on Mac and do the same.
The salespeople might have been referring to running your Windows software on Mac with a virtual machine... with the help of such apps as VMWare Fusion or Parallels. These let you run Windows on top of Mac OS X without rebooting into a Windows partition. See the marketing line: "It Runs Windows Too".

Why isn't the files you put on USB that you downloaded from Boot Camp Assistant not working? That IS where you get drivers.
You are talking to users not Apple.
And everything is in BCA anyway or go to Boot Camp Support (apple support bootcamp web page).

If you have the application on a DVD, you have two options:

    2. Buy an external DVD drive and use it to install Adobe CS6 Design
