How do I install Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite L670D-102

Hello
I have been trying to load Ubuntu 10.10 (tried both AMD64 and i386 versions of Desktop Edition) onto a Satellite L670D-102 using a Live CD. The CD spins for a while, there is some activity on the hard drive and then I get a flashing white cursor (a hyphen) on a black screen. I left it all night and it remained the same. I tried with a 'live' usb and again, no boot. The cds and usb work in other machines running both amd and intel cpus.
The sort of questions that spring to mind are:-
Is there some security or other setting within the cmos that prevents anything other than Windows being loaded?
Are Toshiba simply anti- Linux and I need a new machine?
Do I need a special bios to run Ubuntu?
Any help in resolving the issue would be welcome.

Hi
I use a Toshiba Satellite L655. It came with a Win7. The first thing I did after buying it was to wipe out Win7 and install ubuntu 10.10 on the entire hard disk (not a dual boot or Wubi install). Now I want to try out ubuntu 11.04 beta from a live usb and I am trying to change the boot order. The laptop doesn't boot from the usb drive. I am unable to enter the BIOS. I have tried pressing ESC, F2 etc while switching on the laptop. So far, I have not been able to access the BIOS setup.
I have tried googling and I read about Toshiba's "legacy-free" laptops. But am not sure if mine is such a one. Now, I don't have Win at all in my laptop. I have only ubuntu 10.10. I need to access the BIOS setup and change the boot order so that my laptop boots from the USB drive. How do I do this?
Any guidance would be welcome.

  • How do I install Ubuntu on Mac?

I was wondering about Ubuntu and learning more about it.
I used Boot Camp once to install Windows 7 Ultimate, but I wasn't satisfied with Windows 7, so I removed it. I thought Windows 7 was really boring and I missed many of the games included with XP that were excluded.
So how do you install Ubuntu on a Mac?
I've heard of using virtual software to install Ubuntu, but is it possible to install Ubuntu via Boot Camp?
    Here's my system info:
    15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz (Mid-2009)
Mac OS X v10.6.7 Snow Leopard
Let me know what I need to get started

    Hi,
the Ubuntu community has a very good place to start here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook
Nonetheless I would propose to start with the free VirtualBox as install/use Ubuntu in a Virtual Machine.
If you don't like it it is easier to remove...

    Ask Linksys for a driver.
Sadly the only supported PCMCIA (not not PCcard) device is the 3C589. I use these and they work fine.
You may need to apply the PCMCIA patch from www.xig.com

  • How can I install windows XP on my Satellite A300-129

    Hello,
Since a few days I have bought a Toshiba Satellite A300-129. I'm very satisfied with the laptop, though I don't like to work with Vista so i would prefer to reformate the laptop and install Windows XP Professional(32 or 64 bits, dunno yet).
However I don't know if i have to do anything special for it, because this is my first notebook I've got and I only once had a laptop with drivers on a CD. Now i'm switching operating system i think i need some driver disc's for my webcam and stuff like that.
    I hope some1 can help me :)
    Thanks alot
BTW I'm dutch, so sorry for my English.

    > And i've got a legit license of XP Pro, though i dont understand what u mean with the sata driver things. Do u mean i need to ADD the drivers on the current Disc with windows XP?
The point is that your Windows XP CD does not contain the SATA drivers which are necessary to recognize the HDD during the XP setup procedure.
So you will have to include the SATA driver pressing the F6 button while the XP setup is loading. For this procedure an external FDD drive is necessary.
If you dont have a external USB FDD drive then you could create an Win XP CD and could include the SATA drivers using the free software called nLite.
One note; Use the forums search function for searching on other threads about the nLite and how to create such CD. I remember there are many threads in the forum about this theme.
    Cheers

  • How can I install Microsoft BT stack on Satellite A100 ?

How to install Microsoft Stack for bluetooth?
I've tried the way it is described in readme file:
Uninstall Toshiba Stack, restart, Install Bluetooth Monitor 2 (i did copy necessary files to C:\Toshiba\MS_Bluetooth), restart.
After this windows wants to install Toshiba RFBUS for which i have no drivers.
There is no way to enter windows bluetooth settings [no such control in controls panel].
    It's not working!

Sorry for asking you again. Is it an interal BT module or do you use an external USB BT adapter ?
So I assume you are using an internal BT adapter. So your discription is correct. You can use the switch tool after the removal of the Toshiba stack to enable the ms stack again. I see no reason why it should not work.
If you just want to use the nokia data suite then you should have a look into the Howto section of the BT webpage.
Which mobile phone are you using ?
So if you have installed the Toshiba Bt-stack and want to switch to the ms stack then you can also try
    the following:
    - Open the device manager (Run -> Devmgmt.msc)
    - Open the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section
    - Select the BT device "Bluetooth USB Controller-3 from TOSHIBA" or similar.
("Properties -> Details -> Device Instance Id" of it. It should display
    "USB\VID_0930...". )
    - Right mouse click on it -> Update Driver... -> No, not this time -> Next ->
Install from a list or specific location -> Don't search. I will choose
the driver to install. -> Next -> Select "TOSHIBA Integrated Bluetooth 2" or similar
    -> Next -> Finish
    - Now open the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section again
    - Select the "TOSHIBA Integrated Bluetooth 2" (or similar).
    - Right mouse click on it -> Update Driver... -> No, not this time -> Next ->
Install from a list or specific location -> Don't search. I will choose
the driver to install. -> Next -> Select "TOSHIBA Integrated Bluetooth 2" or similar
    -> Next -> Finish
    - Now the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section shows no BT device anymore
    - A new "Bluetooth Radios" section is available now with 2 devices "Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator"
and "TOSHIBA Integrated Bluetooth 2" or similar.
    - Start MS-stack (Start-> Run -> bthprops.cpl).

  • How to change SATA disk controller on Toshiba Satellite A135 s2276

Hello guys, I know that there was a similar question already (kindly answered by Mike), but my situation differs a little.
I'm trying to install the SSD intead of my hard drive.
Problem is that even though BIOS can see the SSD I cannot install Windows on it (tried XP and 7). Cannot even format it from installation disk (it just hangs).
When I hook it up on a usb cable, it works fine (SSD). I can format it (from windows) and copy files on it like and external drive it doesn't have any issues.
When I try to install windows on it (either from a CD or usb) it hangs. The same situation is if I try to install the system when the SSD is in usb port or if I put it inside, where my hard drive originally is (SATA connection). It just seets there. Comes to copying files and then stops.
I think I'd need to change the SATA disk controller in BIOS (sata to ide or compatibility mode) in order for it to work, however there's no such an option in the latest BIOS for this model (1.60).
    Any help appreciated, thanks Miki
ps. update - I succesfully installed windows on another Toshiba (which has the option to change the sata controller in bios), using the same SSD so I think this is definitely the problem. Any ideas apart from buying a newer comp?

    Hi
If such option is NOT available in BIOS then you will be no able to change this!!!
In such case the HDD controller will say in SATA mode and if you want to install an operating system then you need to install the SATA drivers firstly!
    Bye

  • How to replace the battery in a Toshiba Satellite S55DT-A5130

I'm not finding anything in searches.  The battery is not replaceable.  So, how do I replace it?  Is the laptop considered a disposable when the battery dies or is it really replaceable, with a little work?  The battery is fine for now.  Just planning ahead.  Thanks

  • How can i install Mac OS on toshiba intel celeron satellite  L450-9P

can i install Mac OS on in Windows 7? for dual-boot purpose

But you can install Windows on a Mac via Bootcamp for dual boot.
For the purposes of Windows®, a Mac is just a generic piece of PC hardware, so installing on to it is permitted by Microsoft's EULA.  On the other hand, Apple have explicitly stated in the EULA for OS X "Mountain Lion" that it should only be installed and run on Apple-branded hardware.  Section 2, Paragraph B, Sub-section 1:
you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license […] to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of the Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer…
    (emphasis mine)
    Section 2, Paragraph H:
The grants set forth in this License do not permit you to, and you agree not to, install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-branded computer, or to enable others to do so.
Also, discussion of how to run OS X on non-Apple branded hardware is against these forums' Use Agreement, Section 2 Paragraph 8, including Sub-section 1:
    Keep within the Law

  • How do I Install Ubuntu 14.10 on efi HP110-225ea machine?

I am installing 14.10 64 bit on to an entry level, mATX, new HP 110-225ea Desktop PC. It has an AMI bios version 1.8.0.0 and the machine was preloaded with Windows 8.1. I have reformatted the drive to eradicate Windows. The 1 TB hard drive that I installed to is the first drive in the BIOS Boot Order. (The only other drive is an optical dvd player)
    I get this error.
"Error: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed."
Upon re start I can get into a setup menu with esc.
From there I can do this:-
    Run UEFI application
Hard drive id appears - only one entry as expected
    Enter
EFI appears - only one entry as expected
    Enter
Two choices appear <..> or <ubuntu>. If <..> is selected there are no choices. If <ubuntu> is selected there are 3 choices, MokManager.efi, grubx64.efi and shimx64.efi
I can start Ubuntu by selecting grubx64.efi. I can run sudo update-grub ok. When I reboot I get the same error message "Error: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed."
What do I need to do to get Ubuntu to auto boot?

I want it to work under the ext4 file system.

You can test it out in a VM (free, VirtualBox) and OS X has had boot support for Ext2/3 in there. You could run Ubuntu on its own hard drive.
Don't know Ubuntu server, tried the client, and played around with SuSE 10.

  • Installing Arch on my Toshiba Satellite M70 - NEWBIE

Hey everyone, I'm a complete noob to Archlinux. I have used Ubuntu and have had that running for a while. I've read good things about arch and have installed it on my M70 notebook.
The installation went fine except for two things:
    1) My timezone failed when booting into linux. I'm not sure why but after I set the clock, the rc.conf didnt update it to match my timezone (Australia/Brisbane).
    2) My network connection failed. This is where I'm really confused as I really don't now where to start. I'm not sure how I can find the name of wireless card for the laptop and how to setup DHCP and put in my WPA password.
I am wanting to install GNOME aswell, however, I need my connection working to install this.
    Any help would be great!

    I just came across this:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wif … d_Firmware
So judging by this I typed in:
    # lspci | grep -i net
    And the output is:
    6.02.0 Network Controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2915AGB [Calexico2] Network Connection (rev 05)
    I then get up to:
    # iwconfig
    Output:
    lo no wireless extensions
    eth0 no wireless extensions
So I'm not sure what to do.
