How do I install Ubuntu on Mac?

I was wondering about Ubuntu and learning more about it.
I used Boot Camp once to install Windows 7 Ultimate, but I wasn't satisfied with Windows 7, so I removed it. I thought Windows 7 was really boring and I missed many of the games included with XP that were excluded.
So how do you install Ubuntu on a Mac?
I've heard of using virtual software to install Ubuntu, but is it possible to install Ubuntu via Boot Camp?
Here's my system info:
15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz (Mid-2009)
Mac OS X v10.6.7 Snow Leopard
Let me know what I need to get started

Hi,
the Ubuntu community has a very good place to start here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook
Nonetheless I would propose to start with the free VirtualBox as install/use Ubuntu in a Virtual Machine.
If you don't like it it is easier to remove...

Stefan

    You could purchase any commonly available external USB DVD/CD writer, such as the excellent LG brand units sold on Amazon, for about $30 US.  I've used an LG writer for years to save wear and tear on my older Superdrive.

    Use the Flash Drive that came with your computer it has Snow Leopard installed on it. If you lost it or cannot find it then call Apple and they will replace it for you, I don't know how much they will charge.
    BTW when installing MS Windows please follow the directions whether you are using Boot Camp or a vitualialization solution (Parallels, Fusion, etc.) had  you done this you would not have had any issues.

  • How do I install Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite L670D-102

    Hello
    I have been trying to load Ubuntu 10.10 (tried both AMD64 and i386 versions of Desktop Edition) onto a Satellite L670D-102 using a Live CD. The CD spins for a while, there is some activity on the hard drive and then I get a flashing white cursor (a hyphen) on a black screen. I left it all night and it remained the same. I tried with a 'live' usb and again, no boot. The cds and usb work in other machines running both amd and intel cpus.
    The sort of questions that spring to mind are:-
    Is there some security or other setting within the cmos that prevents anything other than Windows being loaded?
    Are Toshiba simply anti- Linux and I need a new machine?
    Do I need a special bios to run Ubuntu?
    Any help in resolving the issue would be welcome.

    Hi
    I use a Toshiba Satellite L655. It came with a Win7. The first thing I did after buying it was to wipe out Win7 and install ubuntu 10.10 on the entire hard disk (not a dual boot or Wubi install). Now I want to try out ubuntu 11.04 beta from a live usb and I am trying to change the boot order. The laptop doesn't boot from the usb drive. I am unable to enter the BIOS. I have tried pressing ESC, F2 etc while switching on the laptop. So far, I have not been able to access the BIOS setup.
    I have tried googling and I read about Toshiba's "legacy-free" laptops. But am not sure if mine is such a one. Now, I don't have Win at all in my laptop. I have only ubuntu 10.10. I need to access the BIOS setup and change the boot order so that my laptop boots from the USB drive. How do I do this?
    Any guidance would be welcome.

    You don't have to use an Apple drive.  Any name brand

    You can test it out in a VM (free, VirtualBox) and OS X has had boot support for Ext2/3 in there. You could run Ubuntu on its own hard drive.

  • How to delete linux/ubuntu from mac?

    Please help I dont know what else to do I have tried everything. Everytime I try to delete it through bootcamp I get a message saying, "The disk is not journaled. You must enable journaling using Disk Utility before using the Boot Camp Assistant." And I have tried doing it in disk utility too. None of it will get rid of the particion. I really need to delete it because I need the space. Thanks for any help.

    Ok, you got a dual boot setup, you must of have used Bootcamp to create the partition and then installed Linux in there instead of Windows.
    First thing to remmeber is Linux reformatted the partition to EXT when it installed.
    Mac's can't read that format or even acknowledge it exists.
    Second it's likely a sub partition called Linux Swap was also created as this is how Linux handles excess memory needs, by swapping the contents to a seperate partition for security.
    It's possible this sub-partiton is under the main partition, so dealing with the main Linux partition should hopefully remove it in Step #4, else #2 or #3 will do it.
    Step 1
    The first order of business is your going to have to get a copy of your User file folders (Music, Documents, Pictures etc) out of OS X and onto a external hfs journaled (Disk Utility) formatted drive (not TimeMachine!) and disconnect this drive. (and any other drives as well so there are no mistakes)
    You should also make a note of anything like serial numbers, email addreses or other things that are very important as you might be having to erase and reformat the entire drive and reinstalling OS X.
    Note: Always keep a two copies of your vital data at all times.
    Step 2
    The absolute best method. If you have another blank external powered drive (not the one with your backup of files) then download the free to use Carbon Copy Cloner and simply clone (use the default settings for now) your OS X 10.6 to the external drive.
    When that's finished you can hold the option key and boot the computer from it. Now your happy.
    You can use Disk Utility on the clone to erase and format the entire drive, GUID partition map, HFS+ journaled and simply CCC back onto the internal drive.
    Reboot and run ALL of OnyX's maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot. Zoom
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
    Step 3:
    Not the best method, but works, hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk, select Disk Utility and Erase the whole drive format hfs+ journaled and quit, reinstall OS X, Software Update, install programs from fresh sources and finally files from backup back into their respective folders like before (not Library, leave that alone)
    When you enter the hard drive name, use the same name as before, when you go through setup, use the same username as before. This is important or you lose your pathnames to your iTunes music file locations and wind up with a bunch of exclamation points.
    Step 4
    A chance this might work and save yourself some work and be experimental before trying the Step 3 above. Go to Disk Utility and select the Linux partition, rename it BOOTCAMP and change the partition to MSDOS and let it rip. Then enter Bootcramps and see if it recognizes it and allows you to unpartiton it.
    If it works then the 2 and 3 steps are obviously not needed, but #2 is advised as a bootable backup method in addition or surplanting TimeMachine as TM drives  are NOT bootable.

  • How to find installed assets on mac in applicationdirectory

    Hi,
    File.applicationDirectory—the read-only directory where the application is installed (along with any installed assets)
    How do i get to this assets folders/files on a mac?
    I tried the following, but i don't get a list of files.... it works on a windows machine..
    structure:
    myapp.air
    assets/folder1/img1.jpg
    assets/follder1/img2.jpg
    assets/folder2/anotherimage.jpg
    urlarray:Array=getallfilesinfolder(folder1);
    public function getallfilesinfolder(foldername:String):Array
         var filearray:Array=new Array();
         var directory:File = File.applicationDirectory;
         directory = directory.resolvePath("assets/"+foldername+"");
         var contents:Array = directory.getDirectoryListing();
         for (var i:Number = 0; i < contents.length; i++)
                if(contents[i].type==".jpg" ||contents[i].type==".JPG" || contents[i].type==".png")
                filearray.push(contents[i].url);
         return filearray;
    Please some help.
    Perhaps you also know a solution for folders that begin wit a # (%23).
    When i want to get a filelist from that folder, the function simply stops on a mac. no error... nothing

    Hi, i found my answer.
    It turns out that mac doesn't use type. Instead i had to check on extension
    contents[i].extension=="jpg"
    How i found out? to alert some variables like this.
    first i checked if the folder assets/folder1 exists
    import mx.utils.ObjectUtil;
    var directory:File = File.applicationDirectory;
    directory = directory.resolvePath("gardenimages/"+foldername+"");
    Alert.show("test:"+ObjectUtil.toString(directory));
    It will get you a long list of info on the folder. by checking the nativepath, url and exists we can tell if the folder is there.
    Now check the contents of that folder to see if the images are there.
    var contents:Array = directory.getDirectoryListing();
    var sTemp:String = "";
    for (var i2:int=0;i2<contents.length;i2++)
           sTemp += contents [i2].name + "\n";
           sTemp += contents [i2].exists + "\n";
           sTemp += contents [i2].nativePath + "\n";
           sTemp += contents [i2].url + "\n";
           sTemp += contents [i2].type + "\n";
           sTemp += contents [i2].extension + "\n";
           sTemp += "----------- \n";
    and you will see.. on a mac type is null

  • How do I install applications on Mac OS X?

    Hi all:
    I am a complete newbie to the Mac World, am from the pc world.
    I am trying to install applications. I have downloaded a few from the web and I have no idea how to install them. Double clicking on them doesn't do the job.
    Please help
    Thanks!
    Powerbook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Applications either include their own installer or are provided and downloaded via a disk image.
    If an application includes an installer, you will be prompted for your admin password after double-clicking on the downloaded and then provided prompts such as where you want to install the application, etc.
    If an application is provided via a disk image, when double-clicking on the download (the download will include a .img extension such as xxxxxx.img), the disk image is mounted on the Desktop and the application is within.
    Open another Finder window and drag the application from within the mounted disk image to your Applications folder which copies the application to your hard drive.
    To unmount the disk image, drag the disk image to the Trash can in the Dock or select the disk image and at the Finder menu bar, go to File and select Eject. You can then delete the downloaded xxxxxx.img file.

  • How do i install and boot mac os 10.4 on a usb flash drive?

    i want to make a bootable flash drive for my powerbook g4 and i have a mac os 10.4 on a install disk.. i want to be able to boot from the flash drive.

    At some point in the past, when the hardware was more recent, some said they
    were able to make it work. To boot a PowerPC G4 iBook (USB2.0 ports) from a
    USB flash drive memory device. The read/write speed of the USB flash had to
    be optimal and the capacity large enough to accommodate the booting and also
    the necessity for Virtual Memory to run on the USB flash drive, as with a HDD.
    Some suggested they made a clone of a working system, boot from USB flash.
    https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=ibook+g4+boot+from+usb
    There still are some bits and pieces of information pointing to discussions or
    other topics of similar concept; some of the older sites aren't online any more
    where claims and 'proof' were given that this worked out OK. Figuring the older
    Apple portables were adapted to use CF or other camera memory cards, for use
    in systems prior to OS X...
    Sounds like a fun diversion, to take ones mind off weather, and other incidentals.
