How do i Install Win 7 to an External HD

I have iMac 27" 3ghz Intel core 2 duo and love it! I am also a gamer and despise the fact that gaming studios don't make enough games for Macs. So I've tried using Win XP on my mac via boot-camp by dual booting but was not satisfied and didn't like having windows software directly on my apple machine. I don't want to give up gaming entirely on computers so........
I would like to install Win 7 to my External HD (LACIE Rugged ALL-Terrain 250GB 5400 RPM 2.5" USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b External Hard Drive), but i have heard that Win 7 is a little tricky when trying to install it on a machine with multiple HD's using different Operating Systems. Im not quite sure what all the issues are, but if you know how to properly install Win 7 on to an external HD so i can dual boot from that HD to play windows based games than please help! =)

I've not tried it myself, but I've read that if you use a third-party EFI tool like "rEFIt" and you are willing to make a custom install disc (DVD), it is possible. Just do a little Google searching and you should find the same links I found that talk about doing this.
Another thing I have not tried, but should theoretically work would be to use a "boot from VHD" configuration, where you put the VHD on an external drive. I don't remember where I read about booting Windows 7 from a VHD, but I suspect it was on MSDN.

There is no option on bios for SATA support or IDE
    please help me

    Hey buddy
You will not find any SATA or IDE settings in the BIOS. The problem is that you have not installed the SATA driver which is necessary to install the XP on this notebook.
The key is Intel Matrix Storage Manger!
The Storage Manager has to be included into the Windows XP OS during the setup procedure using the button F6.
At the other hand you could include the Storage Manger using the free application called nLite.
Search a little bit in this forum. There are enough threads and postings regarding this theme.

How can I install ntfs on an external hard drive so that my Samsung Smart TV can see my media files? Or is there a better option?

OS X cannot natively write to a drive formatted as NTFS, nor can it format a drive as NTFS. There are third-party NTFS drivers available on the market.
Just out of curiosity: Even with NTFS, how is your TV going to access the external hard drive? Does the TV have a USB port?

How can i install iTunes on an external hard drive?

Thanks, but I'm not referring to the music library, I'm referring to the actual iTunes application.  I've read other threads saying that it can only be installed on the C: drive, so guess i'm out of luck.
    Thanks anyway!

  • How do I install base system on external drive to boot MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 core 2 duo. I use an external HD for storage. Want to make external drive bootable (i.e. to run apps like DiskWarrior on MacBookPro).
How do I install the base system?
    Thank you.

First, be sure the external drive is partitioned using the GUID partition scheme. If it isn't then you will have to re-partition the drive which will erase anything you have on the drive.
Second, the external drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
Last, boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer and install OS X onto the external drive. Do not do an Erase and Install if you don't want to erase the external drive. You can customize the installation to omit any additional components you don't need such as language localizations, Asian Fonts, unneeded printer drivers, etc.

  • How to re-install Win XP on Portege 3500?

    Hi!
    I've got a problem with our Portege P3500 (PP350E):
The Windows XP Tablet PC Edition on it is currently still running, but due to a lot of installed and improperly de-installed software, it's very slow, so I'd like to re-install the OS "from scratch".
I've still got the two original "rescue CDs" that came with the Tablet PC, but there's neither a CD-ROM nor a floppy disc drive in the laptop.
I've tried connecting an external DVD drive via USB, but the laptop wouldn't boot from that. (And I don't know if the recovery CDs are bootable at all.)
To make a long story short: How can (re-)install Windows XP TPE on our Portege?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sebastian

    Hi
The problem is that you can not boot from a USB CD/DVD drive. This is not supported by BIOS and will not function. You can boot from external PCMCIA CD/DVD drive but not from USB CD/DVD drive.
I dont know if it will help you but I found an old, useful forum thread which describes a procedure how to install windows without usage of CD/DVD drive.

  • How do I install Tiger on an external HD?

Can I install Tiger on an external HD connected via FW from the laptop to which it's connected? It seems like the installation disk wants to restart the laptop and only install it there.
How do I do a fresh install of OSX on this external HD?

    It shouldn't be a problem.
First, run Disk Utility, make sure the FW Drive is formatted HFS+.
Let the Install disk reboot, once running off the Installer, you'll come to a spot to choose the disk to install to.

  • How do you Install Win XP using Boot Camp without use of an optical drive?

So I'm about at my wits end. I'm try to get Windows XP on my OS 10.5.5 MacBook Pro. I've run into what seems to be a bit of a dead in. Unfortunately my optical drive has gone stupid on me and won't allow me to get through the entire set-up. The Mac has know trouble seeing the Installation Disc. After my partition has been created and I click start Windows Installer, the computer reboots in a normal fashion up to when you get the apple with spinning progress wheel. At this point the screen goes black and I get a "-" blinking in the top right corner of the screen. I figure it's just trying to boot from Win Install disk but it just kinda sits there. So here's my question. Is there some way to boot this Windows Installation from anything else but the CD? I luckily have an image of the WinXP CD in about 5 formats. I'm going absolutely crazy because I had just Installed WinXP not more than an hour before I ran into this initial problem but wanted to change the WinXP partition to FAT 32 as opposed to the NTSC format I accidently used. I would really appriciate any help in my dark hour.
    System Info
    MacBook Pro 4.1
    Mac OS 10.5.5
    Bootcamp 2.1
Windows XP with Service Pack 2
    HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N
System was just recently re-installed with fresh copy of a software and updates.

    Kirkdan:
I really would like to help you and get your issue resolved in your dark hour as you said. I am afraid that I do not have good news for you. This is because the limitation put on by this entire process of installing Windows via boot camp.
The answer to you question to install windows from any other medium other than your built-in optical drive is a NO. This won't work since once Windows begins to install then it will not have all the drivers installed to recognize the external CD drive (USB/Firewire) and installation will halt.

  • Installing win XP on external esata drive failed

    Hello,
I have a problem with a lenovo T520. I installed win XP sp3 on its internal harddrive and it working fine. I have an external harddrive that I connect to the laptop via the eSata port. I want now to install additional win XP sp3 on the external drive to get a multiboot system.
But while setup, and after the first booting screen of windows, a blue screen of death appears with c0000218 unknown hardware error message.
I examined a little bit, and I saw that while win XP is booting it switch off the external harddrive (or reset the eSata port), and I think that what create the problem,
So is there a way to solve this problem.
    Thanks for any help!

I'm not sure if you can get it to boot normally out of the eSATA port. With XP on USB installs, you have to get it to load the USBSTOR driver early in boot.
You'd probably get better luck on the MSFN XP subforum with this question.

  • How do I Install OSX to an External Drive Partition?

I have an external FW800 drive that I've made two partitions on. One partition I want to install OSX to, for external booting; the other partition is just for storage. I'm trying to use the SNL install disk but It's not installing, it just stalls out. I must be doing something wrong.

Is the external drive prepped correctly?
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.
Or you can clone your current system to the partition:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • How do I install Leopard on an external?

I have a MacBook that for some reason won't take an OS. My thought is to install the OS from my MacPro on a 2.5" in an enclosure and put it in the MacBook.
How would I go about installing Leopard on my hard drive this way?
    -Kyle

Installing onto an external HD should be a routine matter. Ensure that the ext HD is partitioned w/a single partition, has the GUID partitioning scheme, and is formatted Mac OS X. Personally, I prefer FireWire to USB. FW is significantly faster than USB. BTW, ensure that the MacPro has the latest OS update on it. That should allow it to boot the MacBook, but I don't have either to do any testing. BTW, if you're getting those machines sans their HDs because of problems, my experience indicates that most issues are SW related and not HW related.

  • How do I install downloads to my external hard drive?

The download manager automatically installs everything to my C: drive. I am running out of room on my little laptop. :P
How do I tell the download manager to install to my external hard drive? This is for games and fun stuff.
I have Windows Vista on the laptop.
    Thanks.

DEpends on what you want to do - your question is not clear
If you want to copy your iPhoto library to your external drive simply drag it to the external drive either as back up or to run it there
If you want more usable copies of your photos on your external drive use the iPhoto program to export them (file menu ==> exports) to the external drive

  • How do I install Leopard on my external FW drive?

Hi, 30 minutes ago I went out and bought a new external FW 750gb drive. I was planning on using the method described in here:http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20071025100548752 but you now have to pay for it and I don't want to for one bit of info. How was it done. I want 4 partitions. I want the leopard boot disc on one partition, leopard on another. Time machine on another and a folder for my music backup lastly.
Any help anyone? I don't even know which type of data to have it formatted in. Journaled, extended etc.

The key to the install on an external firewire drive that you want to use with Leopard as a boot drive is this... go to the disk utility and click on the firewire drive in the left column. Go to the Partition tab, click it and under the "Volume Scheme:" click on the button and select the number of partitions you want to set up. Now go to "Options" at the bottom of the menu and click it to discover the trick to this settup: select the first partition scheme "GUID Partition Table" and then click "OK"
Don't forget to name each partition in the first menu and make sure the format is Mac OS Extended (journaled) if you desire the journaling feature. Now click on the "Apply" button and you will now be able to boot the Leopard install disk and select the external firewire drive for the install. I did this and it works great!

  • How do I install Win 8 on Satellite C850 following HDD failure?

I have a PC repair business, and a customer has brought me a Satellite C850-1KN laptop which has had a catastrophic hard drive failure (just clicking sound coming from the drive.)
I replaced the hard drive and tried booting from a Windows 8 DVD, by changing the boot order in the bios, however, it still gives a "no bootable device" error message.
I see no way of turning off UEFI boot, it is grayed out in the bios setup.
How can i reinstall Windows on this laptop?

First of all you should know that the setting (CSM/UEFI mode) needs to be changed only if you want to install non-UEFI capable system (Win 7 and older).
Win 8 and Win 8.1 are UEFI capable systems and you should be able to use the UEFI mode option.
How about the secure boot option?
Did you find it and did you try to disable this option?
