How do i install windows 7 without a disc

I've purchased Windows 7.  I'd like to run it on my MacBook Air, it is a mid 2013 13" running 8 Gig of RAM.  As one would know I don't have an optical drive to read the disc that came with the package. I was told by an apple store rep that discs aren't used anymore and that it would be downloaded with the serial number (or something like that) through the web.  Please help...

You can create a disk image of the Win install program. Its rather simple. You can also install the DROP DMG program on mac, and create a disk image (dmg) of the Win7 OS DVD and copy that onto a flash drive if you arent inclined to buy an external DVD player

  • Can I install Windows without optical Driver

    Hi!
I have a Macbook pro Early 2008 - MB134LL/A but its optical driver cannot read any disc. Now I want to install Windows via BootCamp but it cannot. Anybody know how can I install Windows without optical Driver? I tried to boot by USBflash, USB DVD Driver but it cannot boot.
I think that does external optical drivers via firewire work?
    Thanks alot!

Thank you for your reply, and the information.  This is what I came up with:
I added the strings as instructed, however when I went to sign the script in terminal, I was told:
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: replacing existing signature
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: code object is not signed at all
    In subcomponent: /Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app/Contents/info.plist
Also, here are screen captures of the lines that I added.  Mine are the top string entries:
Thank you for your help, thus far!

  • How do I install windows using BootCamp without cd drive fot the new MBP?

New MBP doesnt seem to have a cd driver.
How do I install windows using bootcamp without cd drivers?

You can use a USB thumbdrive to do this, assuming you have access to a windows machine to format the usb stick.
I installed Win7 on my MB Air (2011), which of course lacks a DVD drive altogether, using this technique.
Basically, you download a tool called rEFIt to your macbook. ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/refit/files/rEFIt/0.14/rEFIt-0.14.dmg/download ) When this is installed, it gives you a boot selector menu when you boot the Macbook ('Do you want to boot to MacOS or to the USB drive?')
Then you download and run an Apple tool called Boot Camp Assistant, which allows you to partition your HD for the two operating systems to share; it also pulls down all the windows drivers you need.
Then prep the USB thumbdrive on a windows machine to be a Win7 installer disk. You'll want a drive in the 4gb+ range I think. You have to set up the thumbdrive to be bootable (lots of tools for that available), and then copy all the windows installation files over to it.
Put the thumbdrive in the macbook and boot holding down the option key.
Choose the rEFIt icon on boot, then choose to boot from the thumbdrive, then format your new windows partition to something Win7 can handle, and install windows.
On my machine I followed a slightly more involved process and wiped out MacOS entirely. I would have kept it on a small partition if I'd had a bigger hard drive.
If you need super detailed instructions, CNET has some here:

hello i have a few problems and i hope somebody has a solution my first problem is that how can i install windows vista without using a disk drive and my second problem is that should i tick mark the option which says Install windows 7 while using boot camp please reply, Thanks,

When running Windows in a virtual environment Windows and OSx share your computer's resources such as RAM. Therefore your games can not use all your computer's resources when running.
If you install Windows natively then Windows and your games can and do use all your computer's resource such as RAM.
But as already said, older operating systems are not supported and will not run natively using Boot Camp Assistant. You must use Windows 7 if installing natively in Lion or Moubtain Lion.

How do I install windows 7 on my imac

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Benchmarks of all of the above except Crossover can be found in Benchmarking Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox Against Boot Camp - The Mac Observer. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • How do I install Windows 7 on my new MacBook Air?

Hey everyone, I just purchased a MacBook Air (4GB ram & 256 SSD) with Lion OS... I have been a PC user for forever & a day... I am going to be installing Windows 7 on it because Wellview is not a mac friendly program aswell as other programs. I am trying to learn the difference between Parallels, Boot Camp, etc... I understand a partition & how it works on a PC & have been reading forums in Mac rumours to try & figure it out on this system... But, what would be the easiest way to install W7? I will have to download Windows 7 OS & it sounds like Parallel but it looks like this MBA has Boot Camp already installed on it. Also, would it be better to have the thunderbolt connected to a hard drive & keep everything off of the the MBA HD? Is there a way to upgrade the RAM in the MBA? I know, that's a lot of questions... But, I would rather ask them here & figure it out rather than asking someone on the phone... Yes, I am male... LOL... One other question I have is how will the touch pad work in windows, how do you hit the typically right mouse button when this laptop doesn't even have one? I know you use the different fingers for different actions as I have been experimenting with... Just wondering on that one... I'm sure it works somehow... LOL...

OMG Morgan, you are an inquisitor .
But I will try and answer all your questions:
1+2: it depends on your demands: if you use both OS's often, and have a "normal" HDD you want to avoid restarting all the time and use a Virtualizer. With a MBA restarting is superquick. If you use Mac apps at the same time with Windows you better use the Virtualizer. But if you are having "bootcam windows" and decide to install a virtualizer later, this Virtualizer can make the VM of the bootcamp partition...
3: you can not install Windows without a disk.
    4. The X stands for 10: Snow Leopard is 10.6... Leopard is 10.5... Lion is 10.7... They are all OSX. Befrore that there was OS9.
    5. The Bootcamp install is very good guided: Bootcamp makes the partition on your SSD and after that it will ask for the W7 install disk (in case of a CD you need the Apple superdrive). This partition will be about 60GB for W7.
    6. If you use Parallels, there is Kaspersky antivirus included (half a year), it will only install when you say yes on the install question (say no for W7) but as I said before: only use an antivirus in W7 and NOT in OSX, if you do not pay very good attention Parallels will install it also in OSX. Better use Avast, AVG, they are free, simple, fast, and good. NEVER use norton. But you can use the one you know form your PC life....
    7. delete button: same as backspace, if you hold the "Fn" key at the same time it deletes forward.
    8. When a new OS comes available (this not the same as update), make sure before you install it, that all your apps have compatibilty: you can read a lot of posts here of people who did not check before upgrading to Lion!
(same goes for Windows 8, when it comes).
No I don't know where W7 is the cheapest.
    9. 32-bit or 64 bit: both are good, it does not make much difference either will run a 32 bit app. I use XP which is 32 bit on a 64-bit Mac OSX, and 64-bit W7. Thus: it depends what you want to run. My old Bankapps are all 32-bit and will not run on W7.
I hope I informed you enough to make your decisions now.
    have fun.

How do I install Windows on my macbook pro retina display so that I can play an external cd

I inserted a flashdrive and followed the bootcamp directions.  I then thought that I could purchase windows online and download that program.  When I went to buy windows online, it was $199.00 so I started searching further for an alternative.  That led me to blogs regarding parallels, fusion and Virtualbox info.   Which led me to more confusion after searching the apple store to buy paralles.  I then found out that I needed a windows disc or something to download to actually get windows.     Then I quit.
I'm not sure why this particular CD wont play.  Some of my music CDs do play so I know the device works.

The OpenSolaris CD is a "Live CD". You can boot off of the CD, and either run the OpenSolaris operating system directly, or you can select the "Install" icon on the LiveCD desktop. You can find full instructions here: http://dlc.sun.com/osol/docs/content/IPS/getst1.html

  • Installing Windows WITHOUT Boot Camp

Upgraded my MB to a 250Gb HDD and now have the room to run Windows. I'd use Boot Camp, but I have the HDD partitioned in two and BC requires a single partition. Since I prefer the separate partitions, can I do the following?
    1. Backup everything
    2. Erase second partition and divide remaining space into two new partitions (resulting in 3) one of which is for Windows
If so, how would I install Windows on the third partition? Can I just boot of the Windows CD and be very careful to install Windows on the 3rd partition?
And yes, I have the Mac driver CD ready.
    Thanks for your help

As it turns out, you don't. I simply backed my drive up, partitioned it into three, restored Tiger to Partition 1, my photos to partition 2 basically just a data drive) then installed Windows on partition 3. I can boot to it by holding Option on bootup and I can also run it in a VM using VMWare Fusion. Looks like Boot Camp is just a way to do it for those unfamiliar with partitioning, etc. I'm guessing decades running PC's told me it was doable. May also have given me somehow know-how that I applied without really thinking about it. Dunno.
Bottom line: Boot Camp is NOT required to run Windows natively on a Mac. Nevertheless, I thank you both for your comments
PS rEFIt was not necessary either

I downloaded Elements 11 to my laptop about 3 years ago and now purchased a new computer and need to install it.  How do I install Elements without purchasing it again?

I have Elements pulled up on my old computer, can I find it in the program?
No but if your old computer runs Windows then you can use the free Belarc Advisor software to extract the serial number from inside the computer.
Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit, for software, hardware and security configuration information on your computer.…
Tip for future reference: when buying software, always keep your serial numbers safe and handy. Don't rely on websites, the Cloud or anyone else to retrieve them for you when you need them most. They are the single most important thing you get when you buy software and they are unique to you personally.
You can download software installers from the web any time but, without your unique serial number, you'll be stuck with using the software in trial mode.

  • How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1

How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1 ?
My Superdrive is far from super anymore, So I managed to make an extern drive with both Snow Leopard Partition, Lion Partition (Since I thought Boot Camp 4,1 would bypass my problem), and Time Machine partition, Since I got 1. USB drive that works.
    - My general issue is that Boot camp Refuse to see the USB drive - (Many "how to"´s though show how they install windows perfectly through the USB port, but they use airbooks!, and somehow the Macbook will not ?)
I fix that issue with >> rEFIt <<, that suddenly makes it possible for the Mac to see the USB drive, and partitions.
Which was very strange since I could use an extern HD with the whole installation to start up wipe the whole disk, and then use my extern drive with partitions to install Snow Leopard and get everything as before with timemachine. Very smart with timemachine, but very lucky that I have a extern drive that runs the whole system and that I made the partitionsdrive before. DVD-drives are the past!
Point: So the original system could see the Snow Leopard installation USB disk, but boot camp cannot find the USB drive ?????????
After rEFIt I booted and then I got this error:
    Starting bootmgr.efi
    Error: Unsupported while loading bootmgr.efi
I read it could be a problem with the Windows software, so I purchased an extern DVD drive, Used Disk Utility to make an image (.DMG), then used another program to convert the .dmg to .ISO.
Then downloaded a trialversion of vmWare fusion, and installed windows from the iso. Everything worked brilliant, except and that is why I want to use boot camp, Running windows in another program while running the mac system is a little hacky and slow.
Point: Nothing is wrong with the windows software, and windows runs fine.
I then downloaded the Windows DVD / USB Tool, reformatted a USB drive as Master Boot Partition, MS-Dos Fat partition, then after lots of struggling got Vmware, windows to recognise the USB drive. And installed the windows software on the USB drive, as all the walkthroughs recommend.
Then I tried for "fun"! to just install windows form the extern USB drive, and with rEFIt it will see the drive and start to do something, but then when it starts to boot, the screen just turns into black and nothing happens, and you can see the drive does NOTHING. (I think it is because I only have 1 USB drive and the Extern DVD drive does not get enough power, but again the mac refuse to see the USB drive unless it is a Snow Leopard installation USB-drive!
Well trying to install Windows Ultimate 64 Bit, which worked great in vmware, because that program installed from the .ISO file that I had on the desktop, but trying with Boot Camp did not get anywhere, what kind of **** program is this boot camp anyway!?, but then I try the new USB disk with windows made from windows, thorugh rEFIt, it sees the disk and then starts and then I get this ERROR:
    rEFIt - Booting Legacy OS
    Starting legacy loader
    Using load option ´USB´
Error: Not found returned from legacy loader
    Error: Not found from LocateDevicePath
    (x 9 times)
Error: Load Error while (re)opening our installation volume
The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple´s firmware for legacy OS booting
(Hey Apple please send out a updated firmware that fix this issue?!)
So how do I do it ? - or is the only option to fix the partition running the system from the extern disk. Format the whole drive in 2 from the "bottom" and install windows and then afterwards install Mac on the other partition ?  Or just run windows on the mac and forget about mac software ? What a stupid solution...

There are strings in the pliist file to add other Macs so that you can use some USB-DVD drives.
This is 5 page thread, so a little more 'meat' to it:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3410900?start=60&tstart=0
And on PC booting Windows from a USB DVD to do the install is usually a piece of cake, sometimes you just need to specify that USB in the BIOS boot order and sometimes select via F12 (or another Fkey) and that is it.
What you have here seems to be everything and everyone is excluded unless there is a  mac-model device ID string that specifies yes.  An unnecessary hurdle.
