You can either use Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop, or VMware Fusion to run Windows on your Mac. Many people have done this without running into problems.

Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox are available from their respective sites. Read their installation instructions which explain how to install Windows.

  • How do  I Install Windows 7 on Mac Book Pro via a Bootable USB Drive

    Hi Guys,
I have a Mac Book Pro 13 inch, Early 2011 Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 (I initially had OS 10.5.8 which I upgraded to OSX 10.9.4 a few months ago).
When purchased it, I installed Windows via Super Drive (that being the only time i ever used the super drive). My Windows got corrupted for some reason 2 months ago. Hence, I removed the windows via Bootcamp to perform a fresh install. I discovered my Super Drive was no longer working.
Thereon I have been trying to install Windows via a bootable USB Drive but am failing to do so. After going through several forums, I have reached the following stage.
    1. Created Bootable Windows USB Drive using Windows USB (http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Bootable-Windows-7-or-Vista-USB-Drive). Have used this USB drive to install windows on a DELL Computer
    2. Bootcamp wasnt creating a partition for windows since no Windows Installation disc was being detected in super drive. (Solved it by downloading Toast Titanium and loading the .iso file on a virtual drive).
    3. Boot menu was initially not detecting external drive, so installed rEFIt - An EFI Boot Menu and Toolkit. Now it is detecting the USB Drive.
Now when I boot from this device, it get a black screen with the message "No bootable device - Insert Boot Disk"
Request someone to please help me install windows as some softwares which I work with are windows based.

So my understanding is that my Boot Camp Assistant (BCA), since it does not allow USB installer, it sets NVRAM to boot from Optical Drive. Right?
    Yes.
So can I change it or update it to another BCA version which supports the same??
All BCA versions drive the logic based on the Mac Model Identifier. Unfortunately there is no real workaround. .

  • How do i install windows on my mac mini

The newer Mac mini's don't have an optical drive. I have a Samsung external dvd drive but i don't know if i need to have the "Superdrive" and will mine work when installing.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
On a Mac without a built-in optical drive, any external optical drive will work to install Windows. If you have Windows on a DVD, insert the DVD, open Boot Camp Assistant (it's stored in /Applications/Utilities) and follow its steps.
If you want all the steps to install Windows, select the Boot Camp file that belongs to the OS X version you have > http://support.apple.com/manuals/#bootcamp

  • How do I install Windows Xp - Rookie Mac user

I will 1st apologize for asking this question, probably for the 1000 time on this site.
I am very new to the "mac" way, and need to install Windows XP so that I can run Office 07' for work. And, after dropping $3000 on a MBP, I am very hesitant to just stick the disk in and try to figure it out on my own.
I understand the Boot Camp concept, but could partition something if my life depended on it.
If anyone could post a link directly to where I need to go and read the directions, that would be great
Thank you all for you patience as I drink the "mac kool-aid" and convert from PC
    Chris

First, you should read the Boot Camp manual carefully and follow it in detail.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Boot_CampInstall-Setup.pdf
Second, you should be aware of the points that I have noted below.
You should format your Windows partition using the NTFS format. Fat 32 will not support files larger than 3.5 GB.
To access your Mac hard drive from Windows, you would want to check out MacDrive 7, which is really good.
    http://www.mediafour.com
Under NTFS, you will be able to read your Windows drive from your Mac drive. However, if you want to write to it, you will need the following software from Paragon.

    Three choices
    Boot Camp. Parallels or Crossover
    Boot Camp
    http://www.apple.com/bootcamp/
    Parallels
    http://www.parallels.com/en/products/workstation/mac/
Note both of these choices require a full copy of Windows.
If all you need to run is a single Windows application now and again then I would recommend Crossover from Codeweavers, which allows you to run Windows applications on OS X without needing Windows itself.

  • How to install windows on 2011 mac mini

how do I install windows 7 onto mac mini? I have read people say to copy windows onto a flashdrive.  Then install from that.  Question is do I use my iMac to copy windows install DVD to flashdrive, then plug flashdrive into my mac mini and finish install with bootcamp?

If you want, instead of using a USB drive with the Windows installer (and as you have Windows in a DVD and not in a ISO file), I recommend you to buy an external optical drive to use it to install Windows on the Mac mini. Any external optical drive will work.
If you need help installing Windows, print this file > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf

Just looking for some info on how installing windows as well as iOS works and wether they work well together.. All feed back will be much appreciated.

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • How to Install Windows 7 on mac?

How can i get Windows 7 installed on my mac?
Is it pre installed ? can i get it pre installed when i buy a new one ?
    Regards,
    Robin Paulose

    Robin,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
MS Windows must be purchased separately, you can buy it anywhere Windows is sold including Best Buy, Fry's, online stores etc. Next you must decide how you want to install it. Primarily there are 2 ways, Bootcamp or using Parallels or VM Ware Fusion, the differences are:
Bootcamp is free and comes with Leopard and Snow Leopard. It allows the user to boot their Mac in either MS Windows (XP, Vista and now Win 7) OR OS X but not both simultaneously. In short when you boot you are turning your Mac into a Windows machine. Apple officially supports XP and Vista but doesn't officially support Win 7 installation yet. However many people have done successful Win 7 installations. Look over the Windows on a Mac video here.
The next way is to us either Parallels or VM Fusion. Both products essentially do the same thing, allow the user to run Windows within OS X. This is productive if you want to move files across platforms or don't like the hassle of rebooting every time you want to change OS's. There are many reviews on Parallels and Fusion (just use Google), read those over and then decide which one you would like. They will cost you roughly $60-$80 and can be purchased directly from the manufacturer or most Apple resellers.
Note: Remember when you install Windows on your Mac the partition it is installed on will be susceptible to all the virus's and other malware any MS Windows machine is so use Windows anti malware and virus software to protect your computer. Any virus's will not affect OS X though.

  • How to install windows on a mac

    hi,
I was wondering if anyone has an easy guide on how to install windows on a mac. I purchased a external hard drive to make it easier but still absolutely no clue on how to do this. At college some software isn't compatible with mac so i need to install windows aswel. Any help would be great as not very good with this at all and bootcam

An external drive is not necessary. There are several options.
    One is Parallels
    Second is VMware
Third. Partition the hard drive using Boot Camp
Boot Camp Assistant is pre installed on your Mac in your Applications > Utilities folder.
If you use Boot Camp, you will need to purchase a Windows install disc.
