How do I keep a photo's proper orientation (vertical or horizontal)?

My pictures on my computer that were taken holding the camera vertically show up horizontal on my Itouch when they should be vertical, and when I rotate the Itouch 90 degrees, they show up vertical. I don't use Iphoto, I use the Canon software that came with the camera. I've tried rotating the picture on my computer and then uploading it to the Itouch, but that doesn't solve it. Any ideas?

I ended up shutting down my system, and when I started it back up, I was able to drag the photo to the trash and delete it (I did get a message warning that my deleting the photo might negatively affect the application that was "using" it, but I deleted it anyway...it worked...and I'm hoping I didn't adversely affect another application!).

It should change automatically when you turn the phone but note that there are some screens such as the home screen that do not rotate and some apps that don't support rotation. Also the orientation can be locked. You can turn the lock on or off by opening Control Center (while on the home screen swipe up with one finger starting from below the bottom of the screen). The orientation lock control is on the right end of the top row in Control Center and looks like a lock inside a partially circular arrow. When on, the same icon displays in the menu bar.

Thanks for you reply. When I paint, I bring up the photo as you suggested. I begin painting. After about 10 minutes or so, the photo goes blank. And, I have to start the process over again to get that same photo. It interrupts the painting process. I think it goes blank due to a sleep function. I have gone into the Apple TV settings and turned off the sleep function. But, this does not seem to work. What can I do to keep the image on the TV screen permanently?

If you are talking about your device lock password, then the only thing that can help is the user-created device lock password. There is no "master" or "override" password...only the password you created, entered exactly correctly (including all ALT, NUM, or SYM key modification uses) can unlock it and prevent the wipe.
If you have previously attached to a PC and know now to type your password on the PC keyboard, then you can do that and the counter will reset...it's the same device lock password counter regardless of which method of entry you use.

the metadata transfers ok, it is the description of that photo that does not transfer.

Use the File -> Export command and note the settings to write the metadata to the file on export.

The way to keep the photos from downloading to your wife's phone would be for her to go to Settings > iCloud > Photos > and turn off iCloud Photo Library. How Do I Keep My Photos on an external drive?

I was using an external drive to store my iPhoto Library. When I clicked it to convert it to the Photo app, I started seeing my laptop's hard drive space slowly ticking down. I had no option to keep my photos on my external drive, it seemed they where transferring over to my computer. I don't see where they are saved on my laptops hard drive either? Any recommendations how I can convert my library without bogging down my laptop?
(I won't save them on the Cloud because I have a TON of photos and it will fill that up too)

My iPhoto library was on an external drive. I just dragged and dropped that library onto Photos and Photos then made its own library on the same external drive. Photos does not convert your iPhoto library but makes a whole new library with all your photos. You end up with both libraries and, if drive space is an issue, you may need to trash and empty trash the old iPhoto library.

Each iPod has it's own settings, if you don't set the iPod to sync photos then they won't be added. You can set each iPod up however you like and they will update whatever you have chosen to update.

Could you be a little more specific?

What type of folder do you mean? Is it an Album, which is listed in the Source Pane (left column)? In iPhoto a Folder is something that can contain Albums or other Folders, so that you can create a structure in your Source Pane.

What kind of folder do you mean here? Another album? Or are you talking about folders in the Finder, and not in the iPhoto application at all?
If you are trying to export an album to the Finder and preserve the order from your album, then you can export with the option to "Use album name". This will lose your original filenames and replace them with the name of the album, appended with a number. The Finder always displays your files in alpha-numeric order. If you don't want to lose your filenames or iPhoto Titles, then you can go through the album and place a number at the beginning of every photo title. Be sure to pad the first one with the number of digits you need for the last one (ex: for 100 or more files begin with number 001, 002, etc.). Then export with "use Title" selected.
If you are trying to manually arrange a Smart Album, you can't do that. You can only sort by the options available in the View > Sort menu.
How do I change the tags?
Do you mean keywords? Look at iPhoto's Preferences to edit your entire keywords list. Or click the little key in the lower toolbar to open the keywords pane, then drag photos to a keyword to apply it.

On Pages my imported pics keep coming up as a grey envelope saying placeholder how do i keep the photo file as it is when i have imported it. Some pics stay as they are

I am creating a Pages document with pictures inserted into the script. Some pictures are fine but some keep converting to a grey envelope that says placeholder. When saving the document a little box comes up with a list of images that cannot be saved.
The pictures are photos of freehand drawings which have then been cropped and adjusted within the editing of iphoto.
Any ideas as to how to change the placeholder back to the image please.
