How do i keep itunes off of my C drive

so im still going through the problem that itunes wants to be on my C drive and wont go away. i installed it to my D drive, had a problem earlier today with low space on my C and i see that itunes has set itself up in my "my music" folder and its over 4 gigs. no... F no... so i move it to the destination where i thought i installed it, which it did have itunes and other mac stuffs in there. so i copy paste from my C to the D, everything go fine but now its like itunes is fresh from being installed. thats another story, so i see in preferences that it sets a itunes media folder on C as default. ok... so i change that and then go to unF'ing my apps and itunes stuff. and so while im doing this i check my C drive again after i synced my phone and it uploaded the apps and there it is again... and now its a gig. what do i do now? is there a setting that im missing or something? im already ****** enough as it is that it defaults to the C after being installed on the D and now i have to redo everything for my play lists and it seems to have killed off all the apps i had. i didn't sync or apply the apps or anything because this error came up but now there nowhere to be found. is there a way i can recover them? im trying to bottle my rage right now, this has been a major set back. why didn't it automatically save to the partition where it was installed? anyhow, let me know if there's anything i can do here.

The iTunes application is normally installed to C:\Program Files. If you changed the target location during install then the application should have been installed where you requested. That said, various support files may still have been placed in the C:\Program Files\Common Files folder and the user's profile folder.
The iTunes library is normally created in the user's Music folder regardless of where the application has been installed. If you had redirected your documents folder to somewhere on D:\ then the iTunes library would have followed this too.
If you press and hold down shift when starting iTunes you can create a new library or choose an existing one. Depending on how you moved your original library from C:\ to D:\ you should be able to use this technique now to reconnect to your original media collection that you moved to drive D:. Alternatively use the method to create a new library at D:iTunes. You can then move the various bits of media, iOS application files etc. into the *D:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Audomatically Add to iTunes* folder to rebuild the library.

  • How do I run iTunes off an external hard drive?

I have an 80GB laptop which is getting pretty full, so I've added a 500GB external hard drive with the intention of transferring my music files (amongst other things) to the external drive, freeing up space on the laptop. This has proved (almost) more trouble than it's worth...
Initially I simply copied iTunes over to the external drive using Windows Explorer. Surfing the apple discussions, however, convinced me that I ought to do the "consolidate library" thing as well (which resulted in me duplicating the files on the external drive). Finally sorted that out, deleted the music files on the hard drive, and discovered that my music library was allegedly "empty". Further surfing on apple discussions made me decide to copy the various iTunes library files from the main iTunes folder back to the hard drive. This has resulted in iTunes being unable to open, due to an "unknown error".
I'm ready to give up! Anyone out there successfully running iTunes off their external drive? How do you do it?

Follow up: My next move was to copy my iTunes folder back onto the hard drive. I had only been doing this for ten minutes (the process took twelve hours the previous time I did it) when iTunes was up and running again, and indeed "seeing" all my music files on the external drive. I cancelled the copy process, deleted all the newly copied iTunes music files from the hard drive, leaving all other files intact, and everything seems fine. The problem is now solved, but I'd nevertheless be grateful if someone could explain to me what was going on!
    Thanks
    Ian

  • HT1473 I want to keep my music on my external hard drive to free up room on my computer how do i get itunes to recognise the hard drive to play the music?

I would like to keep all my music on my external hard drive but I can't seem to get itunes to recognise my hard drive.  How do I get itunes to recognise my hard drive so I can play the music off there rather than copying the files over each time?

Click the icon to launch iTunes
Immediately press and hold down the shift key
Keep holding shift until asked to create or choose a library
If iTunes opens normally close and go back to step 1.
Browse to the iTunes Library.itl file you want to open.

If you had copied across as directed there would be no need to move anything back...

  • How do I keep itunes from putting things into the cloud after I've downloaded them?

Hello - Not everyone lives in Silicon Valley or New York City.  I have a relatively slow internet connection so it takes about 2 hours to download a 45-minute tv episode.  Yesterday I did that, and today I went to watch it and it had been put back in the cloud!  "No problem," says Apple, "You can download it again."  It takes f**** 2 hours to download it again.  How can I keep Itunes from putting things I've already downloaded back into the cloud?

How do I keep itunes from putting things into the cloud after I've downloaded them?
You don't. They are in the cloud as soon as you make a purchase. As in immediately/right now. They don't get uploaded from yoru computer to the cloud.
Did you delete it after you watched it?

  • How do I keep iTunes from automatically transferring purchases from my iPhone?

Well, earlier in the year I had a Hard Drive failure. After having it fixed not all my files where on my Mac, including my iTunes media. So I connect my iPhone and it asks me if I want to transfer purchases? I click yes, the transfer wnet fine but some old media transferd too. I didn't want it so I simply deleted it. But when I plug my iPhone in now, it automatically says transfering purchases from Alex's iPhone. I then clicked on the "X" to cancel the task. But how do I keep iTunes from automatically transferring the old material?

iTunes/Preferences/Devices - Select "Prevent iPods, iPhone, iPads from syncing automatically."

  • How can I get iTunes off of my iPad so that I can authorize my laptop

I can only use 5 devices for iTunes. How do I get iTunes off of my iPad to authorize my laptop

Only computer's iTunes are authorised, you don't authorise your account on an iPad. If you've reached the 5 computer limit then you will need to de authorise one of your computers (individual computers can only be deauthorised directly on them), or log into your account and 'deathorise all' and then re authorise the computers that you still have : Authorize your Mac or PC using iTunes

  • How do I keep iTunes from moving files when I add them to my library?

I use a site where artists give away their songs via torrent, so I like to seed as much as possible. But recently when I've added files, they're removed from their original folder and moved to a more generic "music" folder. How can I keep iTunes from doing this, so that my uploads aren't interrupted?

In iTunes, go to Edit > Preferenes > Advanced, and make sure that "Keep..." and "Copy..." are both unchecked.

  • How can I keep iTunes (10.5) from randomly starting up?

How can I keep iTunes (10.5) from randomly starting up, just out of the blue?  I have disabled wifi sync to my iPad
Has anyone figured out how to stop this annoying behaviour?

I am sorry, but the Windows OS is totally unfamiliar to me. I'm a Mac.
I did Goggle the issue and there are a number of support articles about this error message on the Internet. It seems to be a problem in your OS but like I said, I am not Windows knowledgeable at all.
You either have to reregister the Windows installer or reinstall it - if I am reading any of this correctly.

  • How do I copy iTunes Library to a second drive?

How do I copy iTunes Library to a second drive?
Thank you for your time and patience.
                                                                   W.W.

Thank you so much Niel. I can tell that you are the iTunes specialist!
So if I drag that iTunes-library into the second drive's iTunes folder, isn't it going to ask me to replace it?
And if I say yes I won't be able to import what is in this library? How do I get around that? My last and final
question: I see a lot of prior libraries in the folder (probably from earlier iTunes versions) Can they be opened
again? Thank you so much for your time and patience.

  • How can I keep iTunes from automatically reseting it's library? Or, a faster way to bring my files back?

I have decided recently to back up all my audio to iTunes, seeing at it is a powerful tool for audio archiving. My issue is that I want to keep my hard drive free of the enormous library, so I have an external drive dedicated to it. In the advanced features, I can set that. But, why in the world does iTunes insist on relocating my library when I forget to plug in the external disc? I know why, to make a smooth experience for me in the short term -- since these are built for a mass market that doesn't think -- but for me, I know what I want, but sometimes I'm forgetful. So if Apple wants a smooth experience for me, then how about this oversight? The reorganization process ("keep iTunes organized" preference) goes through all 300 hours of audio library by piecemeal, when it should just be looking for changes and surpassing anything that doesn't look different. Perhaps it is only looking for changes but can only do so by piecemeal, anyhow this seems like something that could be devised in preferences. Am I missing something? Can't iTunes send a warning before importing in to a reset library? Does this question make sense?

If it reverts to default because you forgot to plug the drive in, plug the drive in and start iTunes with the option key held down and show it the library on the external.
    Does this question make sense?
The first part did. I started to drift after the "keep organized".
