How do I keep my iMac running smoothly?

I now know that Mac Keeper is bad news. What can I do, or is there a program that will keep my 27 inch iMac running clean and smooth?

If you search MacKeeper on these forums and elsewhere you'll discover many tales of woe and how it has mucked up otherwise perfectly healthy Macs. All MacKeeper seems to do well is con people into thinking they need it. Some useful information here in Klaus1's User Tip:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3030
It's really only necessary to resort to third party applications to try and resolve a specific issue, so if everything is running tickety-boo just forget about it - your Mac will take care of itself.
Avoid all apps that claim to 'clean/speed up/protect, etc.' your Mac. Hopefully others will spot this thread and add their comments so that you can get a variety of views.

Yes, it means to let the battery discharge all the way until the phone shuts itself off, then charge the battery completely. Apple recommends doing this once a month.
    From http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html :
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month.

  • How do you keep a VI running while waiting for user input?

    I have a VI that:
    1.  The user enters set points.
    2.  The user starts the VI and the VI sends the set points to an external process via a serial interface.
    3.  The VI  stops running.
4   The user waits for the external process to complete.
    5.  Repeat sequence. Go to Step 1.
This works well except for one small problem.  Starting the VI in step 2 causes an external micro controller to reset.  During the reset it will ignore set point commands.  To get around this problem a delay has been added between when the VI opens the serial port and when the VI sends the set points to the external process   Is it possible to keep a VI running continuously in this type of application, thereby eliminating the start up and shut down of the serial interface?
If yes, how do you keep a VI running while waiting for user input?

The ones for the event structure specifically. I'm posting from my phone. Look at the basic ones for user input. even a simple while loop with a boolean and a case statement would work.

  • Can I keep my iMac running at all the times?

I have iMac, early 2009 version and in good condition. I would like to know, whether I can keep the machine ON at all the times ( 7 * 24hrs) or should I switch it off every night? So far, I am switching it off every night and switch it on the next morning. Please clarify me.

In talking with a tech guy at Applecare, I was told to shut the iMac down--all the way down--every so often. I'd been using "sleep" for months and months, but this chap said the processor is running at about 10% capacity in sleep mode. It was then accumulating signals, loading up the RAM, and slowing down the computer. If you shut down the computer from time to time--stopping the processor completely--the accumulated "noise" is erased, and the computer will run faster as a result.
I've used a lot of vague language here. I'm not sure exactly what happens when you use sleep mode for extended periods, but in following the tech's advice, my mac is running fast and smoothly.
So I'd say, DON'T keep your machine running forever.
    FWIW.

  • How can i get my Imac, running OSX 10.6.8 with a 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, how can i get Final Cut Pro 4 and DVD studio pro 2 to run on it?

I just bought an IMAC running OSX 10.6.8 (not sure what flavor that is). The processor is 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (Late 2006). When i run Final Cut Pro 4 on it I get the following error.
                        "Configuration error
This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing
                                    * AGP graphics Card"
If Final Cut Pro 4 doesn't run on my system, what version of Final Cut can I run on this as I am a filmmaker and really am comfortable with Final Cut Pro.
On the same note I also have DVD studio Pro 2 and that just quits without any message.
Hope any of you can be some help.
    Thank you,
    Doug

I do know the software version for sure, but the Intel/PowerPC is very confusing. I just need to find someone who would know about this question. It doesn't say G5 on this computer. Thats my biggest confusion. Help Me...

  • How do I keep BI Publisher running when I log out of the console in linux?

I am using the standalone version of BI Publisher and I want to keep it running even after I log out of the console. I have a script that starts it so I typed 'nohup start_bipub.sh &' but when I log out it shuts down anyway. I started my apache server the same way and it still runs after I log out so the only thing I can think of is that X is being killed due to the logout and BI Pub needs it. Is there anyway to keep this process running?
    Thanks,
    Denise

It depends on the data path from the tower you're using, through NATs and many routers, all the way back to the server. Which depends on your current location and sheer luck.
For some users, the data path stays alive for 30-45 minutes at a time... thus the phone only has to ping the server that often for push to work. Their push doesn't use much battery.
Other users have the misfortune of being connected via pathways that only keep a connection alive for 5-10 minutes. Their iPhones eat battery like crazy, and they usually end up switching to a 15-30 minute timed fetch instead.

  • How to restore my intel iMac running Tiger 10.4.11 to factory default - keeping my files, must I Format HDD ?

First, I need to know how to confidently Back-up all my files to a External HDD, since Tiger does not have Time Machine.
Next, Keeping my files, I wish to restore the mac to it's original factory (out of the box) settings. The 'Home' Directory got "renamed" and messed up where everyone's files/playlists etc. were.
Was considering upgrading to a newer O/S but most say that is not recommended. ?? Any suggestions
iMac spring 2007 vintage, intel duo core 2.16 ghz? (I think?)
    thanks,
    JP

    1. You won't lose any data, you may lose updates but these are very easily restored by simply running Software Update and following the on-screen instructions.
    2. Again if you don't restore setttings their settings may be lost. In short you can't have your cake and eat it too. You originally said you want to restore the system to it's factory out of the box settings so you need to decide what to do. Frankly if it were my system I'd do a fresh install and restore everything including the settings and your system will run better and retain the settings you have tweaked over the years.
    3. If the kids want to update their iPods then yes you have to get to a more current version of OS X. You're several generations behind now. Assuming you have a system that will support Lion 10.7.2 which would be:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Then for $60 total which is $29 for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and $29.99 for Lion 10.7.2. You can skip Leopard (10.5.8) which is nice. And no you cannot skip directly from Tiger to Lion. Plan on spending an evening or morning updating. Total time depending on the amount of data you have would be about 2-3 hours.
    4. You can determine the IOS version on each iPod Touch by clicking Preferences - General - About and look for the version.

  • How Can I get My iMac Running again when its stuck in the Loading boot up Screen?

My 2010 21.5 Imac wont  stop loading, The wheel just keeps spinning and it doesn't even boot in safe mode. the only thing i can do is get into single user mode. My Mac doesn't respond to command + r. I am able to pull up a disk to boot from but it doesn't show a recovery disk, only "Macintosh HD", when i click it I'm back at the apple logo screen with spinning wheel. At this point i want to do one thing and that is factory reset the computer. a fresh install, delete everything, NO BACK UPS. I don't have the install CD (This Computer had a previous owner). If i were to buy a copy of the OS X from the apple store (I believe my computer was running 10.6.8, Im not 100%sure and i dont now how to find out at this point) would i be able to even put the CD in the disc drive? would it read the CD even though its stuck in the boot up(loading) screen? How would i get it out if the Drive doesn't read the disk? Do I have Other options? Thanks guys!

You are using Snow Leopard. There is no COMMAND-R for a startup. That's for Lion or later.
Call Apple and purchase replacement discs for your model. You cannot use the retail version of Snow Leopard on your model. You have no other options unless you have the original discs that came with the computer. When you get the discs:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • How can I keep my iMac on the wireless network when it goes to sleep?

I have a new iMac (from Santa) and when it goes to sleep, so does its wifi connection.  I use it for work and need to keep my instant messaging app open and running at all times, even when it's asleep. I also like to have all of my email waiting in the inbox when I come back to the desk.
Is there any setting (or workaround) I can do to keep it connected even when it goes to sleep? I have a MacBook Pro that keeps its connection when it goes to sleep so can't figure out what's happening. Thanks in advance!

going to sleep means disabling the network connection to save power
so what you're asking is not really possible
unless you can change what going to sleep mean on your computer
in the power saving settings you may be able to set going to sleep to just turn off your monitor
because thats pretty much the only thing that can go to sleep if you still wish to use it over wifi

  • How do I get my iMac running Lion 10.7.4 to work with the PreSonus firestudio firecontrol Lion driver?!

Firestudio unit worked fine with other computer and older OS X driver.
Unless the PreSonus firecontrol driver is JUST BAD, the problem must be that my operating system isn't allowing the firecontrol driver to run properly.
How do I fix this? This is very frustrating but I refuse to give up on the problem. I have A LOT OF MONEY INVESTED IN THIS STUFF!!!
    HELP!
    Marco

    Allan,
Which version of what do I have?
Firestudio 2626 is the firewire MIDI audio interface
iMac OS X Lion version 10.7.4
Logic Pro 9 just downloaded 5 days ago (newest version)
The firestudio driver I'm trying to run is called "firecontrol" and is for Lion. It says the firmware version is 31.7.0.0 and the FPGA version is 0 and the software version is FS Universal 1.0 and the driver version is 3.5.6.11118
Not sure what you were asking about but I'd be happy to give you more information if it would help!
    Thanks,
    Marco

  • How do you keep macbook pro running quickly

I always thought that using a MAC would eliminate the need to re-image a machine like you have to do with Windows. However, my recently purchased MacBook Pro 13" retina display with 8Gb RAM, 3Ghz i7 processor is already beginning to slow down - just like a Windows laptop. I have used MacKeeper in the past, and that has improved the performance of previous MacBook Air's that I had. However, I have been warned off MacKeeper (anyone have any evidence that this is a real, solid, non-invasive application that is safe to run?).
Just need some help in how to keep this great machine humming - it's only 2 months old!
    Thanks

Basically... Make sure you have enough Free Hard Drive space for your Mac to Perform as expected...
This is what Apple has to say.

  • How to get video on imac running windows 7 from any source via mdp

I have an imac ( 2011 / 27" ) running windows 7 and I want to get video from any source ( ie my macbook pro & mac osx ) via MDP ?

Can I use Target Display Mode with Boot Camp and Windows 7 using a Thunderbolt capable iMac?
No. Target Display Mode is not supported using Boot Camp and Windows 7 on a Thunderbolt capable iMac.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4617
The 2011 iMacs with Thunderbolt can (at the moment) only be used by other Thunderbolt-Macs as an external display when running OSX.

Any tips what I can do to speed it up, would appreciate any helpl!

I have an 8 year old iMac.
IMHO, here is no magic bullet to make a very old computer run applications like the ones you describe fast.
Compare the specs on your machine with a 27" iMac (current line):
    27-inch: 3.2GHz
    Specifications
    3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB (two 4GB) memory
    1TB hard drive1
NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M with 1GB video memory
I don't spend other people's money, but if it were my money I would seriously consider a new computer.
