How do I keep OSX from automatically moving between emails?

I like to look through my list of e-mails and toss away the ones that are obviously spam WITHOUT opening them. I select them one at a time or by sets and drag them to the trash. The problem I'm having is that in the meantime, Mail is moving up or down the list and opening messages automatically, marking them as read. I would like Mail to stay put on a single message while I'm searching through my mailbox. I have missed reading quite a number of messages in my inbox, thinking that I'd already gone through them because they are no longer highlighted (Bold) as unread. How can I change this? It's quite disconcerting and annoying.

When you Shutdown or restart, uncheck this option.

  • How do I keep iTunes from automatically transferring purchases from my iPhone?

Well, earlier in the year I had a Hard Drive failure. After having it fixed not all my files where on my Mac, including my iTunes media. So I connect my iPhone and it asks me if I want to transfer purchases? I click yes, the transfer wnet fine but some old media transferd too. I didn't want it so I simply deleted it. But when I plug my iPhone in now, it automatically says transfering purchases from Alex's iPhone. I then clicked on the "X" to cancel the task. But how do I keep iTunes from automatically transferring the old material?

iTunes/Preferences/Devices - Select "Prevent iPods, iPhone, iPads from syncing automatically."

  • How do I keep movies from automatically downloading to my computer, when purchased from iPad or Apple TV

I purchase movies from Apple TV and from my iPad.  I don't want them to automataically download to my computer because I have limited space on my hard drive. I see in preferences you can choose to automatically download music, books and apps (or not).  I can't find a way to stop movies from automatically downloading.

As A. Hanwell says... However you should still be downloading your purchases at some point for local backups. iTunes in the Cloud is not a backup service, and if the copyright owners of the content choose to remove it from the iTunes Store it will disappear from your purchase history and you will no longer have access to it. The only solution is to backup your purchases locally.

  • How to STOP OS X from automatically changing between language input methods

I want to know if there is a way in OS X Leopard to stop the system from automatically changing the language input method. I use English and Japanese on my computer, but this would apply to anyone using more than one input method.
For example, when I click on a Japanese-language file, the system automatically changes input to Kotoeri (the Japanese-language input method). When I then click on an English-language file it usually, but not always, changes back to English input. But I almost never want to TYPE in Japanese. I just need to be able to read Japanese and to cut and paste from Japanese language files. It is very annoying when I start typing in an English-language file and find the input method has been changed to kotoeri without me realizing it—everything comes out in meaningless Japanese. When I want to type in Japanese, I want to manually change to the Japanese input system. That is, I want English to always be the default input method even if I am manipulating Japanese-language files.
So, I’m wondering if there’s a way to set the computer so that it never AUTOMATICALLY switches between the input methods. I want to be able to switch only manually. In the old days of System 7, 8, and 9, there was a third-party control panel you could get that would do this (I think it was called Stay There!) and I don't remember this being a problem in Tiger or earlier versions of OS X. Is anyone aware of any way to do this in Leopard?
    Thank you!
    Colin

Well, I do have it set that way, and I can look up there to see where I am, but in the work I do time is critical and I move back and forth between the two languages frequently. It is really a pain and a waste of time to have to look and make a change that should be unnecessary. The problem is not so much that I don't know where I am. It's that I don't want to ever have to think I MIGHT be in anything but English input unless I specifically want to be. In other words, I need to be able to forget about this problem even being a possibility.

  • How can I keep this from automatically starting up??

I just installed this and it starts up automatically and i would rather it not, because it also does not shut down when i am trying to close my computer.  how do i do this????  thankis

Finally sorted the same problem on both my pcs. If you are a member of Facebook, then the problem likely is because of that. What I did to spot Spotify automatically starting up. 1. Log into Facebook, and then into Account.2. Go to Account Settings (on Facebook).3. From there go to Apps (on left side of screen).4. Find Spotify in the list of Apps that shows up and press the "x" button to the right of "Edit".5. Log out of Facebook.6. Log out of your PC.7. Restart the PC.8. Spotify will still appear asking you to log in with Facebook or Spotify password.9. Log in to Spotify with your Facebook password.10. On Spotify - go to Edit (top left of Spotify screen).11. Scroll down to Preferences.12. Scroll ALL the way down to the bottom, and IF it says Log on Automatically, click the "Don't Open Automatically".13. Log out of Spotify.14. Log out of your PC.15. When you switch your pc on again - the problem hopefully, as in my case, was resolved. I have had this problem with other things starting automatically in the past, and it has always been because it is an "App" appearing in my Facebook list. Do the things listed above in that order and hopefully it will work. Hope this helps. Good luck.Steve.

  • How can I keep iTunes from automatically reseting it's library? Or, a faster way to bring my files back?

I have decided recently to back up all my audio to iTunes, seeing at it is a powerful tool for audio archiving. My issue is that I want to keep my hard drive free of the enormous library, so I have an external drive dedicated to it. In the advanced features, I can set that. But, why in the world does iTunes insist on relocating my library when I forget to plug in the external disc? I know why, to make a smooth experience for me in the short term -- since these are built for a mass market that doesn't think -- but for me, I know what I want, but sometimes I'm forgetful. So if Apple wants a smooth experience for me, then how about this oversight? The reorganization process ("keep iTunes organized" preference) goes through all 300 hours of audio library by piecemeal, when it should just be looking for changes and surpassing anything that doesn't look different. Perhaps it is only looking for changes but can only do so by piecemeal, anyhow this seems like something that could be devised in preferences. Am I missing something? Can't iTunes send a warning before importing in to a reset library? Does this question make sense?

If it reverts to default because you forgot to plug the drive in, plug the drive in and start iTunes with the option key held down and show it the library on the external.
    Does this question make sense?
The first part did. I started to drift after the "keep organized".

  • How do I keep ITunes from automatically starting when I boot my PC?

Everytime I start my PC, my I tunes starts automatically. I close it an it automatically starts again 5-6 minutes later. It happens when my IPhone is not connected. The problem began immediately after I updated to the new IPhone iOS 5 software.

I appreciate the help attempt greatly, however, I do not have an Iphone, only an Ipod that I use with Itunes. Basically I have Itunes on my Windows PC, (NOT MAC) and it just has a mind of its own and opens randomly, whenever. I have scanned and searching the Itunes application for something to click off for automatically run, or something to that effect and I see nothing. There has to be a way to disable Itunes from running automatically. It has nothing to do with whether or not my ipod is attached.

  • How do I keep itunes from automatically importing mp3's from other sources

I merge multiple files into single mp3 files.  I used to be able to do this and add them to a folder to add to iTunes at a later point, at my leisure.  Now, when I merge these into mp3 files, they are automatically being added to iTunes and it is driving me nuts.  I use either internet explorer or google chrome.  I have since deleted chrome as this problem started soon after I installed chrome.  However, it is still automatically importing these files.  I want to add them, but at a later point, not automatically.  Any ideas on how I can make this stop?
    Thanks.

Hmmm ... the only the possibility I can think of is that:
something is causing Windows to open the mp3 files as soon as they are created, and
iTunes is set as the default program for mp3 files
This would result on the behavior you are observing, though I'm not sure what the "something" would be.  It may be worth trying this:
In Windows Explorer, select any mp3 file
right-click, select Open with and then Choose default program
Is iTunes selected here, like this?
If so, try changing the default to Windows Media Player, make sure the "Always use the selected program ..." box is checked, and click OK.
Now try your mp3 joining process again - when it finishes, does the mp3 file now open in Media Player rather than being added to iTunes?  Even if so, this doesn't really solve the problem as I would expect the mp3 joiner program to just create the mp3 file and not subsequently try and open it ... however, this might give an indication whether this a direction to go in (or not).

  • We have a few different apple products, but we don't need them all to have the same information. How do I keep everything from automatically being shared thru iCloud? For example, I don't need our contacts on the device our kids use

    ...

You don't have to use iCloud at all. You can either log in with a different Apple ID, or just log out and not use any Apple ID.
Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (it just deletes it from the device). It won't affect the Apple ID logged into FaceTime, iTunes, iMessage, etc.

  • How do I keep Mail from reloading already read emails

I travel for 3-4 months at a time. I have an iMac G5 at home and travel with an iPad mini retina. When on the road, I read and answer all emails on the iPad. When I return home and start the iMac, all these 100's of previously read emails on the iPad will now load on the iMac. Takes for ever and difficult to go and erase individually.
I am using an  embarqmail.com account.
    THanks for for your help.

    Here's the answer from Marketcircle:
This is an expected behavior in Mavericks.
Mavericks made a change in the Mail app which Daylite Mail Assistant was not able to bring over certain items when adding them in Mail. Our temporary solution is to have the Daylite Mail Assistant highlight the content which allows for the proper import into Daylite. Our engineers are investigating ways to try and have the highlight disappear so that you don't see this.
    We apologize for the inconvenience!

Looks like one problem was fixed and this one created for me. I'm not sure if you had this problem, but before Mavericks, when I would tab down in Mail from the addresses (cc, subject) then onto the main body, it would always give me a tabbed start point on the page. Very annoying, but now it doesn't do that. (another DMA problem)

How do I stop my imac OSX from automatically opening itunes 10 when a new device is attached via USB? The devices do not pop up in itunes under a sync category, so I can't turn them off one by one, nor would I want to.
I apologize if this has been answered, but I couldn't find the solution for this problem.

Thanks for the reply but it didn't solve the problem unfortunately and I didn't think it would as I only downloaded Firefox for the first time a few days ago even though I have had this problem for over six months using IE.

  • How do I keep iTunes from moving files when I add them to my library?

I use a site where artists give away their songs via torrent, so I like to seed as much as possible. But recently when I've added files, they're removed from their original folder and moved to a more generic "music" folder. How can I keep iTunes from doing this, so that my uploads aren't interrupted?

In iTunes, go to Edit > Preferenes > Advanced, and make sure that "Keep..." and "Copy..." are both unchecked.
