How do I keep playlists if I restore or upgrade iOS?

Iphone is having trouble staying connected to home wifi, and its battery is "consumed." So recently, I did backup and restore from my computer, and then upgraded to iOS 7, from 6.
Naturally, after the upgrade, my purchased songs were all in the cloud, and my playlists were all gone from my phone.
Sure I may have not properly used a setting beforehand.
Anyhow, as I re-build playlists, how do I keep them on I-tunes for next time, when I get a new phone in the not-too-distant future?
Also, if I purchase songs, will the .mp4's keep physically downloading to my authorized and primary computer, or will the physical files be in the cloud and no longer accessible as physical files?
On the battery issue, if anyone wants to address that, is it possible the consumed battery is a factor in my phone not staying connected to home wifi?
Apple people at the tech support store said my phone antenna was detecting wifi fine, so they did not consider the phone damaged.
Any help to any of these things would be appreciated. Thank you.

When I want to set up a playlist, do I have a choice whether that playlist is hosted by Itunes and the Music Library, or, it goes on the phone? Or both? It looks like I can build a playlist for EITHER the library or the phone.
Also, I re-downloaded purchases into the Library and then drag-and-dropped it all onto the phone. The cloud icon stopped being next to the songs on the phone at that point, but now cloud icons are re-eappearing all over the place. How can I get rid of the cloud icons for good? Not into that.
I keep the physical .mp4's in folders on  the computer and I bring those to the library and to the phone. I don't mind the purchased songs being held by Apple into the cloud, but I want all of that in the background and rarely engaged.

iOS 5: Updating your device to iOS 5 or Later
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
An iPad 1 can only be updated to iOS 5.1.1.
If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update.

Why wouldn't you simply restore your iPhone?
If you elect to do that, you would use iTunes (current version 11.0.1), plug your iPhone in, sync it, and choose "Restore" from the iPhone's summary panel on the right.
A restore like this may or may not solve the issue (it likely would).  If it doesn't, you would restore as new (instead of restoring from the backup) and then manually sync the iPhone.

  • ITunes keeps telling me the restore (after upgrading to iOS 5) has been interrupted.

I am trying to upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.
As my MacPro is still running Snow Leopard, I decided NOT to sync with iCloud but rather with iTunes.
Every time I connect the iPhone, iTunes tells me the restore has been interrupted and offers to resume backup.
When I do, it starts restoring, restarts the iPhone and then I get same message.... over and over again.

Did you try to use another USB cable or USB port?
If you would be on a PC, I would also suggest to check the security software settings, but on a Mac there is usually no 3rd party AV software installed.
Any other USB devices connected during the update process, besides keyboard and mouse?
Maybe you should consider to remove and reinstall iTunes, if changing the USB port or cable does not help.

  • How can I keep a playlist on phone when syncing with new computer?

When syncing my IPhone I am prompted with an ominous message that says "Are you sure you want to remove the existing music ... from this phone and sync with this ITunes library? Music .... will be removed and items will be synced from this ITunes library" The answer is no because I have a playlist I would like to keep on the phone, but add one which resides on the computer I am attempting to sync with. That is not an choice presented, the choices are Cancel or Remove and Sync. Apple should either give more options or at least a better explanation. I have synced this phone and computer combination before but have since created a new playlist in the computer (a Mac Mini).
So how can I keep a playlist on the phone and add one from the computer too? Is it possible to view the phone as a drive and move items around in that manner? I use ITunes on both Windows and Mac platforms but this issue has always been problem for me. I also have IPhone 3 (used as an IPod), IPhone 4S and Iphone 5.

Unless you can get the iPod backup file (and restore the iPod from that file on your new computer) from the "dead" computer you will lose all the app data you can export via email.
    - Yu can trabsfer iTnes purchases from the iPod by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - You can transfer non-itunes purchased music to the new computer by using one of the third-party programs discussed in this previous discussion.

    - After you move the stuff to the new computer, either restore the iPod from the backup, or if no backup, restore to factory defaults, new iPod and sync.

The 1st and 2nd gen shuffles do not have an automatic syncing mode, like later shuffles and the "big" iPods.  It is maintained manually (or by using the Autofill feature).
If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  The shuffle appears in the sidebar, under DEVICES, when connected.
To add songs to the shuffle...  Show a list of songs in the iTunes window.  For example, you can select Music under LIBRARY (in the sidebar) to show your complete iTunes music library list.  Select a song and drag it to the shuffle in the sidebar.  You can do this with more than one song selected.  Alternately, select the song(s), right-click the selection, and choose the command to Add to Playlist -> [name of iPod].
To remove songs from the shuffle...  Select the shuffle in the sidebar.  To the right, it's Settings screen is shown.  Toward the top, where it says Settings, click on On This iPod (to the right).  The list of songs on the shuffle is shown below.  Select the song you want to remove and press Delete on the keyboard.  You can do this with more than one song selected.
NOTE:  At the bottom of the shuffle's list of songs, there are controls for the Autofill feature.  You can also use Autofill to fill your shuffle from your music library or from a specific playlist.

  • I recently had to completely restore my laptop, so I lost the music on my itunes. It's still on my iphone, but how can I keep the music I already have and continue to add more music from the newly set up itunes again?

I recently had to completely restore my laptop, so I lost the music on my itunes. It's still on my iphone, but how can I keep the music I already have and continue to add more music from the newly set up itunes again? Is there actually a way to do this? I can't help but wonder what the stupid icloud is for if my music is still somewhere in the 'cloud' but it's zero help for restoring music when it's lost on a computer....any help even a site that get's around apple would be great!

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Have you failed to do this?
If so, not good, you can transfer itunes purchases from the iphone to your computer.  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You can also redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

  • How can I keep my restrictions on my ipad will still restoring it.  I ask this because you can easily restore the ipad which disables restrictions.  Is there a way to always have restrictions on even in restoring it?

How can I keep restrictions on my ipad.  I know that if you restore the ipad as new then the password and restrictions gets disabled.  Is there a way to constantly keep restrictions on the ipad even with someone restores it as new or restores it in general

If it's restored to a backup, and the restrictions were in place when the backup was made, then they will be kept (they will effectively be copied back on from the backup). Restoring to factory defaults/as new will remove them and all other settings and content from the iPad, and you can't change that behaviour - one reason is that if you forget the restrictions code (and there are fairly regular postings on here from people who have) then the factory default reset then allows you to remove it.

How can i keep separate playlists on linked devices so we can both listen to different music when not on a network or wifi?

    Hi Nancy,
If you keep the entire iTunes folder as it was and you're still using the same platform, you'll be able to keep all your playlist and metadata.

Just curious why when you have songs and playlilsts on the IPod it doesn't just sync with the computer? It only syncs from the computer to the IPod not visa versus.
Well, iTunes will only transfer content from the computer to your iPod. However, there's some ways to get around this. Read this carefully:
If you have purchased songs from the iTunes Music Store, then those are pretty easy to transfer to your computer. You'll just need to follow [this instructions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305465].
All your other songs (for example, those ripped from your CD's), you'll need to use any 3rd party program to transfer them to your iTunes library!
Some can also transfer your playlists, videos, ratings, podcast...

  • When burning a playlist to disc, how do you keep the songs in original order?

When burning a playlist to disc, how do you keep the songs in original order?

If you are burning an audio CD, they will burn in sequential order as in your playlist.
If you are burning an MP3 CD or a data CD, they will burn as individual files, and can be sorted any way you like when you view the CD.  For an MP3 CD, the files will be prepended with a sequence number, so if you sort by filename, they will be in the original order.
