How do I keep quiet passages quiet when bouncing with normalization?

I do a spoken-word podcast. There is a 2-second gap between paragraphs. While the file is in Logic Pro X, everything sounds perfect and the gaps are silent. If I bounce it without normalization, the audio file is too quiet and people complain; if I turn on normalization, the file is at the right sound level but all of those quiet passages progressively become louder with hiss (any random background noise, things that should normally be below the threshold). How can I prevent normalization from gradually raising the gain of the silent passages? The rising-noise pauses sound abysmal.

I am a little bit embarrassed -- because I just now discovered the cause after months. It was that the "Music" app on my iPhone was set to the "Late Night" EQ setting, which performs this automatic levelizing as a track plays. I've no idea how long it's been set, probably years. I was about to buy a new set of studio monitors because the hiss I get from my iPhone doesn't show up when I listen to the track on my computer. I've been trying to solve this for months, and it never occurred to me the cause was on the playback side. (I do the "crappy speakers" test via my phone.)

Firefox 2.0.0.20 is the last ever version of Firefox for Win98 / SE / ME.
You can get it from here, but you are better off using K-Meleon (derived from Firefox) or Opera instead an old version of Firefox:
    [ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/2.0.0.20/win32/en-US/]
You can try KernelEx to get Firefox 3+ to work, but it would be very slow with an old PC of less than 750Mhz. 3.5 and later supposedly doesn't work.

  • How can I keep 16:9-format when making a DVD

I am trying to make a DVD based on 16:9-films made in iMovie. I want to keep full quality in both pictures and sound. But the dv-file comes out in 4:3, not in 16:9. How do I keep the 16:9-format all the way from iMovie to iDVD (I can not go directly from iMovie to iDVD, because I am going too put more than one film on the DVD)? Do I need Quick Time Pro? I am thankful for a clarifying answer...
      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Besides starting with a 16:9 iMovie Project you must choose the "Expert Settings" when exporting to QuickTime.
Choose DV Stream. Double check those settings by clicking the "Options" button. This is where you'll find the aspect ratio for your DV file.

  • How do I keep the keypad open when making a call? I may need to enter an extension and the screen is black.

After I make a call sometimes I need to enter an extension. When I receive certain calls I need to be able to hit a keypad number. The phone screen goes dark in both situations. How do I keep it lit?

It remains dark even when you move the phone away from your ear?  Is the proximity sensor covered by a screen protector or case, perhaps?
Try hitting the menu button to see if that lights up the screen so you can enter extensions or respond to prompts.

What? Do you work for Apple?
I have been on the phone for Apple since 5:30 Eastern Time today. We are still on the phone with them. It is 10:14 PM. We are going to get a new phone because the ios6 has major problems! The wifi connectivity is a serious problem. Apple is aware of it. More people need to do something about it. I am willing to start a class action suit against them. I have means to an attorney pro bono. If you are having problems using your iphone 4 or 4s with wifi and ios6...I suggest you spend time calling a senior advisor and get a new phone sent to you. They know they messed up but they can't fix it.

  • How do you keep film roll data when exporting?

I'm moving to a newer computer and wanted to transfer my large library to the new setup. I have film rolls organized with original photo dates, but when I import the library in the new iPhoto setup from a hard drive all the dates change to the day I originally imported them by scanning, not the dates of the photos themselves. How can I keep all the film roll data I worked hard on to organize the photos?

I hope that someone comes along soon to tell you a better way, but in the meantime, here is what I do when I need to reset the date.
Open an event and click on one of the photos.  Select the 'Photos' pull-down menu and choose 'Batch Change'.  This allows you to change the date for all of the photos in the event.
I decided it was too much work to do batch change dates when I moved my photos to iPhoto four years ago so I keep most of pre-DSLR photos in a Picture file outside of iPhoto.  Inconvenient at times, but I don't need to access older photos all that often.  When I do, I just pull a folder of photos into iPhoto and batch change the date then.
I am sure there must be an easier way; I just stumbled onto this accidentally.

  • How do you keep the graphics on the screen with AWT?

Hi. I have been playing around with applets a lot lately and I keep coming to the same problem. Once the applet is loaded, if you draw something in it and then move another window in front of your applet the thing you originally drew disappears. I have been wondering how to avoid that problem for a while but I can't figure out how except to keep a bitmap or double array of color values for every pixel in the applet and then redraw the entire thing every few milliseconds. I also noticed that the same thing happens to java window panes, unless you use Swing. I found out about it pretty much yesterday (the fact that swing automatically refreshes the missing portion of the graphics), but I would prefer not to use swing unless it is really that big of an improvement. The reason being that I want to learn how they managed doing the refresh without using up massive amounts of your computer's concentration. Does anyone have an answer?

When a component in a AWT or Swing GUI is made viewable (after having been uncovered as you describe, or being de-iconified, or at the program's request) then the GUI thread calls the paint() (or in Swing, paintComponent()) method.
Your program should provide a reasonable implementation of paint() or paintComponent().
I also noticed that the same thing happens to java window panes, unless you use Swing. I found out about it pretty much yesterday (the fact that swing automatically refreshes the missing portion of the graphics), So does AWT.

Does anyone have an answer? This should have been covered in just about any introductory tutorial or book about AWT or Swing. I'm surprised you didn't see it. (Well actually maybe not. Sun is pushing Swing hard and as I recall they don't exactly make it easy to find AWT tutorials.)

  • How to get around a performance issue when dealing with a lot of data

    Hello All,
This is an academic question really, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my issue, but I have some options.  I was wondering if anyone would like to throw in their two cents on what they would do.
I have a report, the users want to see all agreements and all conditions related to the updating of rebates and the affected invoices. From a technical perspective ENT6038-KONV-KONP-KONA-KNA1.  THese are the tables I have to hit.  The problem is that when they retroactively update rebate conditions they can hit thousands of invoices, which blossoms out to thousands of conditions...you see the problem. I simply have too much data to grab, it times out.
I've tried everything around the code.  If you have a better way to get price conditions and agreement numbers off of thousands of invoices, please let me know what that is.
I have a couple of options.
    1) Use shared memory to preload the data for the report.  This would work, but I'm not going to know what data is needed to be loaded until report run time. They put in a date. I simply can't preload everything. I don't like this option much.
    2) Write a function module to do this work. When the user clicks on the button to get this particular data, it will launch the FM in background and e-mail them the results. As you know, the background job won't time out. So far this is my favored option.
    Any other ideas?
Oh...nope, BI is not an option, we don't have it. I know, I'm not happy about it. We do have a data warehouse, but the prospect of working with that group makes me whince.

My two cents - firstly totally agree with Derick that its probably a good idea to go back to the business and justify their requirement in regards to reporting and "whether any user can meaningfully process all those results in an aggregate". But having dealt with customers across industries over a long period of time, it would probably be bit fanciful to expect them to change their requirements too much as in my experience neither do they understand (too much) technology nor they want to hear about technical limitations for a system etc. They want what they want if possible yesterday!
So, about dealing with performance issues within ABAP, I'm sure you must be already using efficient programming techniques like using Hash internal tables with Unique Keys, accessing rows of the table using Field-Symbols and all that but what I was going to suggest to you is probably look at using [Extracts|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/9f/db9ed135c111d1829f0000e829fbfe/content.htm]. I've had to deal with this couple of times in the past when dealing with massive amount of data and I found it to be very efficient in regards to performance. A good point to remember when using Extracts that, I quote from SAP Help, "The size of an extract dataset is, in principle, unlimited. Extracts larger than 500KB are stored in operating system files. The practical size of an extract is up to 2GB, as long as there is enough space in the filesystem."
    Hope this helps,
    Cheers,
    Sougata.

  • How can I keep logo background transparent when flattening for web?

Hi, I have a logo designed in Illustrator which I'm bringing into Photoshop to save it for the web. It comes into Photoshop with a transparent background, but when I save it for the web or flatten it, it gets a white background. Can you tell me how to keep the background transparent?

File > save for web (& devices). That will give you the best and smallest web-ready graphics. With save as you're embedding all kinds of info that doesn't need to be in the image. File size can bloat ten-fold quickly. Use save for web.

  • How do I keep my iTunes music when i give up my business iPhone when leaving employer

I originally setup a i Cloud I.D. account when i received a new iPhone from my employer.  I personally purchased music from iTunes and have it also available through iTunes for Windows on my home PC.
I will be leaving my job and returning the business iPhone back to my employer.  The phone will be redistributed to a new salesperson to setup for his purposes.
    My questions are:
"Will my existing i Cloud and iTunes be terminated or deleted when it is set up by the new employee assigned the phone?"
"How can I continue to enjoy my purchased music without  an apple device?"
"What happens to my current i Cloud I.D. when I give up the iPhone?
"My current i Cloud I.D. has my personal CC on file for Apps and iTunes, how do i delete this account and create a new I.D. to store my i Tunes?"

    Brian,
Turning in the phone does not necessarily mean giving them control of the account.  If you can do so, keep the iTunes account, and as soon as you can, change the password.
Whether you do or don't keep the account, make sure that you have a copy of the music song files on your own personal computer.  It is normal AAC audio that can be played on a range of devices. I repeat:  make sure you have a copy of the song files in your possession!!!!
