How do i knockout in illustrator???

I'm trying to send my artwork for a business card to the printer, i need to mask d to mask out certain elements of the card. in order to do so i need to knock out a white shape that is on a dark background can anyone help me???

How do you know it is not knocking out, are printing seperations?
Go to Ai>view>overprint preview. (Does the white spot become clear?)
Select the object then go to window>attributes> uncheck overprints. (does this change the overprint preview?)

Doug's got it right. It sounds like you are trying to open a later version file in an earlier version. This will always be handled as opening the PDF portion of the file. Try Googling AI_openMultiPagePDF for a script to open these or Resave from the newer version to the older.

Still got the problem that after sAIObjectSet->DeleteObject the brush (Pattern on Path) isn't deleted but has a funky name "Deleted Plugin Object 1".
Any correct way of making deletion of a brush work, if I already know the brush's name (and what kind it is).
I also have tried various selectors with sAIPlugin->CallPlugin with AIObjectSetMessage.
I'd be happy using sAIDictionary instead of sAIObjectSet if there were a hint how to get the dictionary with those brushes, and I'll be happy with separate dictionaries per the separate brush plug-ins, just like the object sets are per brush plug-in.
But how to get to those brushes dictionaries, if they exist?
Rest of my plug-in works great, but can't use it or give it to anyone as long as it keeps amassing brushes and I can't clean it up.

What happens if you try to set in in the Characters palette (you may need to click Show Options in the flyout)?
If it fails to work, there may be something wrong which makes it worth looking at the following list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

Have you tried File>Scripts>SaveDocsAsPDF? There should be a folder of sample scripts installed in your AICS3 folder and a folder of documentation which contains an Illustrator AppleScript Reference which has examples.
