How do I know I bought the new Time Capsule, the box looks the same.

Hi all, I bought a new 1TB Time Capsule via mail order after Apple announced they upgraded the TC. I haven't opened the shrink wrap. Is there a way for me to know I have the new TC without opening the box? The box design looks the same to me as the old TC. I can return the TC if I didn't open the shrink wrap. Thanks!!

I'm pretty sure the serial number is on the outside of all apple product boxes. Find the serial number and type it in here: https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do
It should give you the full name of the product. The new ones should say "Early 2009" somewhere in their name.

Do not setup a TC over wireless.. it is like sitting on the branch you are sawing off.
Plug it into the computer by ethernet.. press and hold the reset until the front LED flashes rapidly and start over.

  • HT3728 how do I know what my airport express time capsule needs to be replaced?

I believe I have router problems.  I have installed a new cable modem and I have good bandwidth from comcast but my base station, time capsule, router seems to now be able to handle the wi-fi in the house. I have the router serial number but I don't know the abilityof this instrument.

That is the oldest of the TC.. it is more than capable of 24mbps but wireless may become poorer as the power supply declines.. it will eventually stop working.. it is well over 4years old most likely unless you bought refurbished.. reliable operation is about 3years.. (plus 3days to be exact) at which point it can die any second.
You have had a good run.. replace it.
Poor signal on the Express.. which I note you didn't mention in your first post.. should be reset and located nearer to the TC.. they are not picking up enough signal to work well. If you have the latest express.. plug it by ethernet to the TC and bridge it.. turn off wireless in the TC and use the Express only.. that may work better until you steel yourself to purchase a new TC/Wireless router.

  • I just bought a new "Time Capsule" 2TB.  Apple says it is "Server Grade".  What does this mean?

I just bought a new 2 TB "Time Capsule".  I read somewhere recently that Apple claims this unit has a "server grade" drive.  I am reading here that the Time Capsule appears to have many failures.
I am asking today if the failure rate amongst users here is about typical for a large external drive or....and is the drive contained in this unit just another 2TB drive made by anycompany?

The original TC came with a Seagate 500GB ES drive. that was the seagate server series and were a better drive.. i dare say other than the dead power supply many of those drives will still be working fine. It is mean time between failures that is the measure of server grade. Since that time MTBF numbers  quoted by drive manufacturers all exceed the value that was in 2008 deemed server quality.. so they will claim server grade. Although all the drives used today are pedestrian domestic cheap ones.
But do not think the drives don't die.. they do..And new bigger drives means more data lost in one hit than ever before. I have seen a spate of WD dead drives.. both black from Gen2 1TB and green lately.. one on the bench today is a Gen4 with 2TB WD20EARS that corrupted the data partition of the drive. Getting data back is expensive and time consuming.. to say nothing of uncertain, having spent all the money that the recovered files are of any use.
Be paranoid... like Bob!! Keep a backup and another backup of all the stuff that you deem important. Remember in the past you had your photo album on film strips and printed in books. Now they are electronic digital format.. and a wave of the emf wand and they all disappear.. !!

  • Time Machine error -6584 can't run the programme, using new time capsule. Help please!

Bought a new time capsule and it appears to be OK, my Macbook has backed up nicely. Tried to get my imac 27" intel to do the same. Can seee the capsule and can save to the capsule but Time Machine won't run. I just get the error message -6584 .... any ideas anyone?

The problem seems to be common. Time Machine won't start: i.e. "it"... or the "Stars Wars" thing...
The following process eliminated the "error -6584"
Brand new out of the box, 2TB Time Capsule 4th Gen, backed up my iMac 24/4GB/10.7.2 over ethernet with no problems or errors. Time Machine did several incementals over night while I slept. When I returned from work, ready to reimage the OS, I discovered TC hung on an hourly incremental. When I tried to re-establish connection, no dice (error -6584) .
Several attempts to open the volume failed. I could manage all the preferences and configure the Time Capsule. I just couldn't open the back up or start Time Machine (app).
I dropped the %HOSTNAME file from the archive folder in Finder into the Disk Utilities image window to verify and repair, but received "file in use".
Restarting ("reset") the TC oddly resulted in renaming the volume label to "Unamed".  I open Airport Utilities and renamed the archive folder to "Data" as before...
Now able to mount (login into) the volume... But it shows "--" in available volume space and no "Oldest" or "Latest" backups are displayed...  Not a good sign. Waiting for backup to start..... Looking for backup....
Odd, instead of failing now, it started an incremental. Done!
I am now able to open Time Machine (or that cool Star Wars thingy that takes you off somewhere) and review all the backups starting with the first one I created before I went to bed last night.
The question seems to be what created the problem. I suspect my iMac went to sleep (shut down HDD) in the middle of an incremental. That may have set the "in use" flag on the archive and OS X didn't know how to handle that when I woke the machine up.
I hope this helps, and corrects my problem permanently.

  • How can i connect my existing airport express to my new time capsule network?

I have an older airport express for wirelessly extending my network in my apartment. I bought a new Time Capsule and my airport express flashes amber and cannot find the time capsule to connect. How do I get them connected?

You can use the USB3 connections for USB2.  That's downward compatible.  Just runs at USB2 speed.
Just this week apple announced a couple of TB adapters, TB-to-ethernet and TB-to-firewire.  But the FW adapter is not at the apple store as yet (at least at the time I am posting this).

What IP address does the TC have and what IP does the computer have?
We need more info as we really have no idea what your network looks like.
Modem router, model, type of broadband?
TC setup as bridge or router?
Is the computer getting internet via the TC?
Are you using wireless or ethernet?
Have you set IPv6 correctly to local link in the computer on whichever network client is doing the connection?
Did this work the first time for backup and has now failed? If so simply reboot the TC. It is a constant bug that the TC is lost to the network.

  • DHCP problem with new Time Capsule

Just bought a new time capsule, and cannot get it to work.
I previously have a Belkin router/wireless that works great with my cable modem.
I plugged in my new Time Capsule into my cable modem, and it does not seem to get an IP address from the cable modem. I have it configured to use DHCP as I did with my old Belkin.
I can get the TC to work in bridge mode with my old Belkin.
I've tried resetting the cable modem (both powering off and hitting the reset button).
I've updated the firmware on the TC.
I've tried just the TC and the cable modem, no difference.
I haven't tried to configure things manually, without DHCP since I'm not sure how to configure.
    Thoughts? Help?

I also have a belkin and a time capsule, ive managed to get it to work in bridge mode. All you have to do is go into airport utility and find your time capsule, then you click on 'manual setup' and from there click on the internet tab and then at the bottom there should be a dropdown box where you can select 'bridge mode'. Apply the changes, your time capsule will restart, and thats it. You might have to activate bridge mode on your belkin, that easy though.Just type in its IP address into your browser while your connected to it wirelessly to acces its settings (im sure you probably knew that!) and allong the side there will be a 'wireless bridge' button or similar, simply click on that and turn it on.
Its best to let your belkin handle dhcp and nat, i tried fruitlessly for weeks trying to let the time capsule handle this, but i was only bombarded with double nat errors and matching ip addresses ending up in a factory reset of both the TC and the Belkin!
    Hope this helped =]

  • New Time Capsule Ethernet operating at 100mbps

    Hi,
A collegue of mine just bought a new time capsule for our office (3TB one) which features '3 gigabit ethernet ports'. I have my Macbook Pro plugged into a Belkin Thunderbolt Dock and the ethernet from that to the TC (the ethernet socket in dock is gigabit). When doing this I only get 100mbps, but if I take the ethernet cable plugged into the WAN port of the TC and put it into my dock I get 1 Gigabit connection through my thunderbolt dock.
Clearly it is the TC limiting the link speed, and at the moment it is better to operate on wifi with a link speed of 450mbps. My question is what do I have to configure on the time capsule to allow the ethernet ports to give a 1 Gigabit link speed.
    Help is appreciated!
    Regards,
    Jayden

Two TCs here both check in at Gigabit Ethernet on all of the LAN ports, so you might want to take the TC to an Apple Store or Apple Servicer if you have one near you to let them take a look.
There are no port settings or adjustments in AirPort Utility 6.x to make changes to the Ethernet ports.

  • Airport utility cannot find new time capsule

I have moved house and bought a new time capsule. The airport utility cannot find it. As context, I have successfully set up the new wi-fi network - should I use this to connect to the time capsule of my main wifi network ? I have also done a factory reset already. I think the cables are correctly plugged in - from the LAN output on my router to the WAN port on the TC - is this right ?

As context, I have successfully set up the new wi-fi network - should I use this to connect to the time capsule of my main wifi network ?
No, your cabled connection is far superior.
I have moved house and bought a new time capsule. The airport utility cannot find it.
Do you have iphone or ipad?? If so download the airport utility for iOS.. it is far superior to the Mac version.. and should be able to discover it.
If you need to do it from the Mac.. start over.. sorry .. yet another factory reset is helpful.. do it properly like this.
    1. The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local only.
    3. After the reset the TC will appear in the WiFi as a new device. And in the Airport utility as Other Wi-Fi Devices (1) which you click.. from upper left corner of the AU.
    4. No luck do it the hard way. Or what I should say.. is the exact manual method that brooks no exceptions due to lousy networking in Mavericks.
Plug the TC into the computer by ethernet.. make sure IPv6 is also set link-local only in the ethernet interface of the computer.. and simply do full manual setup. Turn wireless off in the computer. You can do this in full network isolation.. ie TC plugged into computer. Start with factory reset.. that is assumed before the following steps.
These are the steps for manual configuration.
    1. Make sure you are getting an IP in the computer from the TC.. the router must show 10.0.1.1 after a reset. The computer will be 10.0.1.2
    2. Open the airport utility and go to the top menu area. Open File / Configure Other.
    3. Type in your IP address.. after a factory reset there is no password required. But if it complains it is public
    Click ok.
    4. You will then get the full edit screens where you can manually setup the TC to whatever you want.
    5. For mavericks I strongly recommend changing to all SMB compatible names, ie short 2-20 characters.
    No spaces and Pure alphanumeric.
    eg
    6. Use same rules for wireless. Set security to WPA2 Personal..
use a password of 10-20 characters mixed case and numbers... but still pure alphanumeric.
You can use a different name for 5ghz if you want.
You can also set channels at least for 2.4ghz I am not sure if 5ghz is relevant for AC models.

  • Older airport extreme base station as a network extender with new time capsule

I just bought a new time capsule (802.11ac). Can my older airport extreme base station (model A1143) be used as a network extender with it?

    Yes, although it maybe disappointing..
There are two kinds of extending.. wireless repeater type which is poorest as it has to transfer all packets in two steps instead of one.. hence will halve the speed.
Or using ethernet to the old extreme and set it in bridge.. You can then setup roaming network... this is much better.. but getting ethernet to the right place could be messy or expensive or both.

wireless extend doco.. mind all of this is out of date.. the basics are correct.. the methods via the airport utility may be obsolete.
