HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED MORE MEMORY

My system seems sluggish at times and locks up on me for a while then resumes.. I have 4GB of 1334MHZ.. Do I need to add 4 to 8 more GB? Will that resolve my issues?  I run a lot of stuff at the same time and at times might have 10-15 pages open at a time.

In order to tell if you need more memory open Activity Monitor (located in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder).
Select the System Memory tab at the bottom of the window:
Notice the entries labeled Page outs: and Swap used: if the system is short of physical memory these entries will have increasing numbers in them.
The best way to check this is to first re-boot your machine and log in. The entries should both be zero. Now use your system as you normally do, while occasionally looking at the entries. If either increases then you could benefit from more physical memory.
However other factiors such as a root disk that is short of free space can also cause the sysmtoms you report. So check that also.

  • How do i know if i need more ram

mac is running slow, how do i know if i need more ram?

Well, how much RAM do you have? Post back what you have.
Another possibility is that your hard drive is getting too full - the Mac OS needs a minimum of 10 - 15% of hard drive space free and available at all times. So, click on your hard drive icon once and hit Command and I on the keyboard. In the resulting window, post the results: space available, used, etc.

  • HT1342 so how do i know if i need more ram? (upgrade from snow- mt. lion)

Here is the mac that i have. I want to upgrade from snow l. to mt, lion when it comes out. articles are saying that i will need 4gb even though the updae page says 2gb. how do i read the activity monitor to see if i need more ram for the update? or do i just need to wait, install teh update, and then check? I want to get this all done in the next month so help would be great!

2 GBs is the minimum required. 4 GBs or more would be better. Your model supports up to 8 GBs.

The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • How do i know if I need to replace the battery in my MacBook Pro?

How do i know if I need to replace the battery in my MacBook Pro?

There are a few ways (none of which are covered in the above link). On more recent OS X versions, when you click the battery icon in the menu bar you may see a "Service Battery" or "Replace Now" message. If you aren't seeing that, the system probably thinks the battery is fine.
Also, in your System Information utility, there is a Power section that provides Health information for the battery, with a Condition status and Cycle Count. If the Condition is Normal and your battery is under 300 cycles (for removable batteries) or 1000 cycles (for non-removable batteries) it is not time to replace it yet.
But of course, the other time to replace it is if you don't think you're getting the runtime you want out of it.
If none of those is a problem, don't worry about it.

How does one know if they use "java applets"? What do they do? How will I know if I need to 'disable the java web plug-in browser' if I do not use them? (Obviously I'm not very literate in computer-speak.)

Well, when you go to a web page a section of the web page will have a coffee cup picture where the java applet will run. The applet loads then runs. If you are not seeing this behavior then you are not using java. If it make you feel more comfortable then disable the browser java plugin. On my machine I have not disable java- but you
    may what to.

  • TS2083 How do you know if you have more than one graphics card installed?

How do you know if you have more than one graphics card installed? My MacBook Pro does not provide a connectivity to TV via HDMI.

You can go to <http://support.apple.com/specs/#macbookpro> find your Mac's technical specs.
Depending on what kind of video output port you have, you should be able to get an adapter to HDMI.  For example a Mini Display Port to HDMI (I have one of these).

how do you know your iphone needs a new battery ?

  • Need more memory?

My computer is running very slow & I've been told I need more memory. How do I know what to buy and where to get it? Also, how do I install it, or do I have to get it done somewhere?

This HP support document should tell you everything you need to know about upgrading your memory on a desktop computer.
However, before you spend time and money adding memory, you might want to try the tips and tricks in this document: Improving System Performance without Adding Memory (Windows 7). It offers some very useful techniques for speeding up your system. (Here's the version for Vista, and for XP/ME/9x). You might find that you don't need to add memory, but even if you still do, the suggestions are great for maintaining a healthy, quick computer.

  • Page ins 1.46GB outs ins 87.3MB...do i need more memory?

My macbook has been getting slower and slower, i suspect i need more memory?

they are probably going to strain your hard drive long before you run out of ram. they only load there first part of the audio file and then stream the rest from the disk. you would no better than anyone just how many sounds you are using. do the sums. with the setup you are describing i am doubtful if you are taxing the computer/memory/harddrive all that much. if it was double that then i'd start to get concerned. i think your problem is not memory related - or at least not in the way you think. perhaps faulty RAM? could be.
if it was working fine and then crashed, maybe you just ran across one of the little ol' bugs that still lurk within logic. if that's the case chalk it up to experience and move on - keeping a close eye on it of course.

  • Do i need more memory for mountain lion?

I'm trying to update to Moutain Lion but get a pop-up box saying that I need more memory.  Is this something I need to buy and install?

Mountain Lion requires a minimum of 2 GB of RAM however most users recommend a  4GB or more. Installing RAM is extermely simple and yes you need to buy it. We would need to know the exact model of iMac you own in order to advise which RAM your system needs. I'd recommend contacting a trusted vendor such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial or your local AASP, each can assist you.

  • Need more memory, need help

    Hi There,
I tried to download some software for my Powerbook and a window opened and said not enough memory. Where do I go to buy memory? I want to buy the Apple Word Version and update to Leopard but don't know if I need to buy 2 or 4GB or MB. What do I do? Do I go to Crucial or NewEgg? My budget is kinda limited as I'm a student currently. My CPU speed is 1.33 GHz, I don't know if you need more info. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Nina:
So what brand memory do I buy and where is the most reasonable & reliable place to buy from? NewEgg or Crucial?
The PowerBook G4 behaves better with optimal quality RAM. This module from Crucial is what you need.
    Can I install it myself?
Yes, you can with these directions from iFixit.
And will 1GB be enough memory for Apple's Word and Leopard?
It should. When you have installed an additional ! GB module you will have a total of 1.25 GB. That should easily be sufficient.
Don't mean to bombard you with so many quest. ;)*
    My pleasure.

Hi, does your MacBook have Firewire, or just USB?
FW is far faster if you have that.
    Avoid Bus powered ones.

  • I want to purchase. how do i know if i need 16, 32 or 64G?

i like individual games (i.e. scrabble, angrybirds) and shared games (words with friends) that i play on my iPhone. I don't know how to choose the G i need and what criteria to use to figure that out.
    can someone help?
    thx

The size that you need depends on what you planning on having on the iPad. Apps themselves, and ebooks, tend not to take up too much space e.g. Angry Birds HD is 20 meg, Scrabble for iPad is 18 meg (the size of an app is listed on the left-hand side of its description page in the iTunes app store). The things that tend to take up a lot of space are films/TV shows, music, and photos. I have a 50 minute HD documentary on my iPad that is 1.4 gig, the same size as a 1 hour 40 minute standard definition film that I have. With the settings that I have for my music I average about 50 to 60 meg per album - but I tend to have my music at a fairly low quality setting, albums bought from iTunes will be about 120 to 150 meg (I think), though you can then convert them to a different setting via your computer's iTunes before syncing them to the iPad.
Personally I would say get the largest that you can afford - it is always best to have too much space than not enough. And once you've bought the iPad the size can't be increased, so if you buy one that you then find is too small then you can either sell it (e.g. via Ebay, or locally to family/friends or local small-ads) and buy a larger version or just swap content on and off the device.

  • How do I know if I need to pay for new version of Mac Os

I bought a MacBook pro in June last year (2011) - a month before the new version of Mac OS came out. I paid $29 for the update, however a few days later, I got an email from apple telling me about a free update to the version that I had paid for. I feel like my $29 paid last year was wasted.
As another new version of Mac OS comes out soon, how do I know whether I should pay for the update?
Is there a specific rule that says for how long a serial number qualifies for free version updates?

you have to pay for the new update.  It's only free if you purchased a new mac June 11th of this year or later.  You'd have to call Apple if you want to inquire about a refund from over a year ago.
