How do I know if Mountain Lion has installed properly?

I can only guess that the install process was interrupted, maybe after the files were extracted but before the install, maybe on the reboot?
If it was dome ot would say version 10.8. And you would have the reminder and notes apps as well, also an easy thing to check.

Hi. App Store had me update the info in the billing section which I did. When I updated it and click done it came back to the Mountain Lion page still with the icon Buy App. I clicked that for a second time but it said (something like) that I I've already purchased it. I noticed there's the Mountain Lion logo on the Launchpad and it seems to be downloading but there seems to be no progress bar. It seems like it's not moving although we're only subscribed to about 1Mbps with our landline based broadband.
Is it downloading and have I purchased it properly? I've forgotten what the icon display once you buy something because I don't purchase that often (the last was Lion from last year). I know once it's installed, the icon says installed but when you're downloading it should the app say "downloading" instead of going back to "Buy App"?.

If you want to check the progress, go to the app store>purchases. If something is downloading, the progress bar will be there.

I'm booked in at the Apple Genius Bar in Bordeaux, France on Wed ... quite a challenge as my French isn't great! The current internal disk is 500gb, does anyone know whether I can upgrade my 21.5" iMac (circa Oct-2009 vintage) to a larger size internal disk, 1Tb or even 2Tb? I already have one external 2Tb drive and another one on order (I have masses of media stored and more planned as I've just taken up photography). Seems a bit of a pain managing with only 500gb internal storage. OR, can you advise me on how I can store all my photos on my new 2Tb external drive - I can't seem to figure out how to set the path for iPhoto to see them (I can't even figure out where they are stored right now!). Same with iTunes, how do I set the default storage to the external drive (I moved everything manually and then imported them all from the new drive - it worked but seemed very convoluted). Hi, My mother now has a new to her late 09 mini that originally shipped with snow leopard. When she bought it it came with mountain lion preinstalled from a private seller. We were thinking that to be on the safe side that it might be better to erase and install what's on it just to be sure it is secure. I tried to erase and install snow leopard from a disk but it says that the installer is not compatible with this version of osx(mountain lion). Question: How do I erase mountain lion and install snow leopard?
I've read here that there is possibly a built in recovery disk that I can use to erase and reinstall mountain lion. Q: Is there a built in recovery disk available in my situation? and if so should I use it or be even safer by installing snow leopard instead?

That has never been a feature of Mac OS X, but I believe there was some kind of third-party software that could add that capability. i don't recall what its name is, but you must have had that installed, and it either isn't installed anymore (perhaps removed as incompatible?) or is not working properly in Mountain Lion.

I think you'll need to find a way to delete or move files to an external drive to free up some space. Generally, you want at least 10% free space on the HD for best performance. In your case, you probably will not get ML to install. Assuming you are talking about 2 GB of hard drive and nor 2 GB of RAM.

You cannot install or run an OS X version lower than what is, originally, installed on your Mac.

Purchase a high quality USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt hard drive, formatted as an OS X exetnded (journaled) drive with a GUID partition scheme and install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion to the external drive and boot and run your new iMac from this external drive.
This is the only optioh to run an older OS X version on a new Mac.
I have a 2009 iMac that the lowest OS X version I can run from the iMac's internal hard drive is OS X 10.6.1.
I have an external drive with OS X 10.5.8 and can get my iMac to boot and run this older OS X version from the ex eternal hard drive.

Your only other option is to return your new iMac within 14 days for a full refund and look for older iMac, either new or used that came with OS X Mountain Lion as its original, preinstalled OS X version.

I don't think common operating systems have an easy way to do that check.
If you have a limited number of files, implement access control yourself, instead of using operating system permissions. E.g. write a configuration file that contains:
# Syntax: "filename": "list of users who can access that file"
somefile.txt: fred, alice, bob
somedir/anotherfile.txt: bob, joe
Read in the configuration file and check against it when a file is being requested.

If you can download the ML installer you can make a bootable install media by using:

If your Mini came with ML you can also boot to Internet Recovery
OS X: About OS X Recovery
and it will install ML. Make sure you boot to Internet Recovery and not the Recovery Partition. If to the partition you will only get Mavericks.

So here's what I done so far:
tried resetting PRAM - No success
Done disk utility. Disk verified with no errors. I even re formatted disk. - no success starting.
Tried re installing mountain lion via download . It froze halfway installing -no success.
Tried backing up a time machine backup from my USB hard drive. It froze at 1% - no success
Tried booting from safe mode - no success
Tried the command line boot - no success.
Please someone help!

Sounds like the hard dre has left the building, Died, in the Sh*tter, Gone to the hard drive resting place in the sky.
Buy a new drive connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can install Mt Lion on that drive connected externally. If you can then the drive inside your system has failed.
Oh Wait!!!! You have the 2009 model. They are known for bad drive to logic board cables. So it may not be the drive itself but the cable going from the drive to the logic board. Do the same as above then if the system runs OK with the new drive connected externally install it in the system and see if it boots. If it does you are good to go. If it doesn't then it is more then likely the cable that hs failed.
I would suggest you also SAVE a copy of that download of Mt Lion and create a USB install drive from it using Lion Disk Maker, once you get your system up and running.
