How do I know if my AT&T unlock was successfull?

Hi, I called AT&T about an unlock for my  iPhone 4 (that I purchsed from a friend) two days ago. After being on hold for about 15 minutes the operator finally came to the phone and told me to wait about 3-5 business days to plug my phone to itunes and back up and restore it then it would be unlocked. She said the unlock was all approved on her end but she had to send a request through apple and she was positive they'd approve it since my IMEI number was clean. After I got off the phone with her I was so excited because I've been trying to unlock my phone for a couple weeks with no luck. Then I started reading forums and blog posts on the subject and people were saying how they reccieved an email confirming their unlock. Then I tried remembering if the AT&T operator ever asked for my email and she didn't! Does this mean I won't get the email? Should I call AT&T back? All the posts about this topic are from April of this year and I really need some new information so if anybody has anything to add, can answer my questions or has any experience with using T-Mobile on the iPhone 4 pleeeeease reply. I'm going crazy waiting over here!

You do not always get that message.  I didn't, and also was uncertain as to whether my iphone had been unlocked at the end of that process.  I did, later, get a text from AT&T saying my phone had been unlocked.  Call AT&T if you get no confirmation at all.
Here are some notes I took for my daughter to help her unlock:
!!!Sync your contacts first - iTunes does not back them up!!!
1) Sync your phone
           If you have a lot of apps, take screen shots of each of your screens - when your apps are restored, they are scattered all over the place.
2) Right click your phone in the left side column of iTunes and select "Backup"  
3) With your phone still connected, after Backup is successful, On the Summary tab in iTunes, under "Version" click "Restore"
   You will get a warning that all data and settings on your phone will be wiped out
   The process takes about 15 minutes
    When it's done, you get a message that your phone has previously been connected to "this" computer
    And you will be asked if you want to restore from backup - YES you do
You may or may not get a message from iTunes that your phone has been unlocked.  I did not get it, but did get a text from ATT that it was unlocked.  I called just to verify anyway.
After that restore, you need to right click on your phone in the left side column and select "Restore from Backup" to get your data back.
Sync your contacts again to restore them too.
