An optical drive is a CD or DVD drive. They are standard on all MacBook Pros and most other Macs released in the last ~15 years.

How do I know whether my computer (13" MacBook Pro, purchased in 2010) will allow me to play hd movies downloaded from iTunes, or whether I need to download sp versions?

It will play them. Even my 2008 MB plays them perfectly.

  • How do you know if your computer is running 64 Bit?

How do you know if your computer is running 64 Bit?

That's actually a kind of complicated question. Strictly speaking, there's no such thing as "running 64-bit".
That aside, Intel Core 2 Duo processors and late-model Xeons all have chips that have the Intel EM64T instructions set (64-bit extensions developed by AMD and later adopted by Intel), so they are capable or executing those added 64-bit instructions.
In the Leopard OS, most of the system software has been compiled to make use of 64-bit libraries, but at the same time, 32-bit versions are included for compatibility with pre-Leopard software. So, at any given time you can have software running that uses only the 32-bit instructions, or uses the 64-bit instructions.
Now, albeit the 64-bit libraries are capable of addressing a 64-bit address space, until recently, iMacs and Mac notebooks used Intel chipsets (not the CPU, but the chips that connect the CPU to the other parts of the computer) couldn't address more than the 32-bit address space (a portion of which was reserved, which is why you couldn't use more than 3G of RAM in those Macs).
So, based on that you can ask these questions to see if you are running in 64-bits:
Is the computer a G5 Power PC, Xeon, or Core 2 Duo CPU? If no, you are 32-bit, else go on...
Are you using OS X 10.5 or later? If no, you are 32-bit, else go on...
Does the application "require OS X 10.5 or later" or does it advertise that it's a "64-bit" application? If no, the application is probably 32-bit.
On OS X 10.5 and later, most of the pre-installed Apple-branded software uses the 64-bit versions of the libraries, so they can be said to be "64-bit".

how do i know if my pc is infected by a backdoor virus?.... there was a window, which said that i won something.... the only button was the "ok" button, to go on.....there was no red X on the upper side left and i could not even close safari..... so i said "ok" and then I couldnt use safari anymore, until i started the computer again(doing it usually didn´t workd, so i had to shut it down just holding the start button)....now i´m scared i could have a backdoor on my pc now..... what can I do?... or how do I know if my pc is infected or not?
    please help!!

You can't get a virus merely by loading a web page. As long as you didn't enter any personal information or open any files downloaded from that site, you're safe.
Quit Safari (by force if necessary.) Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. That will stop the page from reloading automatically. Select Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove all website data to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

I have macbook pro and am on OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 . I am having lot of warning message on my browser that my computer is infected with malware/spyware and use mackeeper. How do I solve this issue . This is happening more on chrome and Safari browser

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.
If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same string you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • How do you know when your MacBook is infected?

Hey All. Well my question is how do you know when your MacBook is infected with a virus? I came off windows and i have norton antivirus so i have something to tell me there. But on the Mac OS you rarely get viruses and i dont have a anitvirus program, so how do you know when you have one? And what does it do?
    Thanks!

Since no ones got one that I know of it is hard to say. I figure that when the day comes that someone writes a Mac virus you will know real quick what happens. If your concerned you could use ClamXav. I use it if I download something for my wife's PC but have never found anything yet.

  • Have had to re-download Mozilla due to malware - final step of installation asks if I will allow unknown publisher to make changes to computer - click YES and get message my computer is infected with malware - click NO and cannot open Mozilla

Long story short, unwisely allowed unknown publisher to make changes to my computer (which I thought was related to my anti-virus protection) last night. In the process, seems I allowed malware (called antivirus8). Neither Explorer or Mozilla were available - seemed to have been wiped out by antivirus8 thing. Explorer came back up (with favorites still intact) after doing full scans and a few other things...but Mozilla did not. Uninstalled Mozilla and re-downloaded. Final step of installation asked if I wanted to allow an unknown publisher (and I'm sorry to say I don't remember exactly what it was...something with safe in the name, I think) to make changes to my computer. Clicked NO and still not able to access Mozilla...redid and clicked YES and immediately got message that my computer was infected with malware. Have used Mozilla for years...hate just having Explorer. Anti-virus program is Kaspersky...ran full scan and it did not detect a thing...so I really don't know what happened!

Try running several malware scanners to see if Kaspersky missed anything. It is best to run several as each will pick up things that the others miss. Some scanners you can try are:
    * [http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php Malwarebytes]
    * [http://www.superantispyware.com/ SUPERAntiSpyware]
    * [http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php Ad-Aware]
    * [http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx Windows Defender]
    * [http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html Spybot S&D]
If the above malware scanners do not find any malware or can not clear it, you should consider posting in one of these forums for specialized malware removal help:

  • How do I know if my computer has a virus?

    Hello,
When I am on netflix and click on certain buttons more windows open on my computer. It didn't used to happen so I am worried that my computer has been attacked by a virus. How do I know if it is a real virus?
    Thanks!

You may have installed one of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

  • How do I know if my computer has a SuperDrive?

I am trying to use IDVD but it wont appear at all and then it said you needed a SuperDrive so I don't know if my computer has one?

Click the Apple icon in the menu bar and choose 'About this Mac'. Click the 'More Info...' button.
In the sidebar or the pane which opens, click 'Disc Burning' (expand thue 'Hardware' list if necessary to see it) and in the list you will see 'DVD write' and the types it can burn: if it doesn't have this you don't have a superdrive (unlikely, I would have thought, they've been standard for some years).
If you need to follow this up please ask in the forum for your model of computer: this forum is for the creation of podcasts.

  • HT5228 How do I know if my mac is infected?

I am new to mac and just saw media reports about 600K infected macs.  How do I know if mine is infected?

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
Post the lines of output,if any, that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
Repeat with this line (triple-click anywhere in it to select the whole line):
    find /Applications /System/Library/CoreServices -type d -name *.app -exec defaults read {}/Contents/Info LSEnvironment \; 2> /dev/null | grep DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
If you get no output from either step, you're not infected with any variant of Flashback that I know of.
