Problems I am having with my superdrive(not so super):
1) It just ejects 8 out of 10 discs I insert aftew few seconds of trying when my other Macbook Black or my wife's old Dell laptop can do it in few secs. Discs arenot so scratched either.
2) I am confused if it can write DVDs or not because when I check the info about my superdrive on it says I can as you can see above but idk I also have Windows 7 installed on my MBP using Parallels and inside My Computer my superdrive is tagged as "DVD-ROM drive". What is it?
3) When I insert a already burned DVDs or CDs containing data,  my Superdrive thinks its a blank disc and asks me what do I want to do with it for eg: burn.
What do you think about this? What is happening? Is my superdrive being dead? Is there any thing I can do as a last resort before thinking I have a MBP without an optical drive?
Oh btw I was also searching on Google for the solution of this problem and I saw few people talking about their region locked superdrive or something like that? Do you think my superdrive is refusing to read discs because it is region locked or something?
Thank you so much for your time

The lens may be dusty. Try using a lens cleaning disc.

Ignore it.

No. That concerns only commercial entertainment DVDs (movies).

  • MacBook SuperDrive Reads/Writes DVDs but not CDs

The SuperDrive on my first-gen MacBook (bought May 2006, Intel Core Duo) is acting up, but in the opposite direction of what you might expect: It can read and write DVDs, but fails on all forms of CDs: it cannot mount commercially-produced audio CDs or CD-ROMs, nor any form of CD-R (blank or previously written). It ***** them in, spins a bit, hesitates and then finally spits them out after a minute or so.
But it can read all sorts of DVDs (video and data), whether commercially stamped or home burned. And it can write to DVD-R. Pretty much the opposite of what you might expect if the lens was dirty or some other mechanical problems - since one would assume that the DVD mode would require higher tolerances than CD modes. And yes, I've used a CD lens cleaner just to be sure.
    Suggestions?

Thanks - so does that mean a SuperDrive has two different lasers, one for CD media and the other for DVDs? I guess I assumed there would just be one (for the DVD) that was downward-compatible so it could also read CDs.
I've done a lot of searching, and I've seen many cases where a drive fails to work with DVDs but still works with CDs ... but not the other way around (which is my situation).

  • I have  a iphone 5 and i can not figure out how to turn on the LED notification light. is this even possable? if not how do i know if i missed a call when i was not there to answer it visualy

If you were not there, how would you see the led?
Anyway missed calls will appear on your Lock screen under the Missed tab.
Or a small red numbered badge will appear on the Phone App icon when you have missed calls. You can then access the Recents Tab in the Phone App to see whcih calls were missed.
Missed Calls are shown in red there

  • How do I know if it will fit on one DVD?

So I am working on a DVD project (My first one) and I have about 12 movies that are about 20-25 minutes each in .avi format. The total size for all of these movies is about 3.07 GB.
How do I know if iDVD will be able to fit all of these movies on one DVD? Does it go by the 60min rule regardless of file size, or will all twelve movies be able to fit on one DVD? a DVD golds 4.7Gb of information right? So it should fit theoretically, but it is almost 3.5 hours of video.
Is there a fill bar or something within iDVD that can estimate how much space I have left for a DVD based upon the images, menus and movies I add to a project? I dont seem to find one in the iDVD project window and the Help file did not turn anything up.

The size (MB or GB) of the input files doesn't matter to iDVD. What matters is the length (in time).
iDVD renders/compresses/multiplexes your video into MPEG2 format which is the format of a playable DVD. With a single-layer DVD you can fit up to 2 hours of content (video, titles, etc.); with a dual-layer DVD you can fit up to 4 hours of material. iDVD will make choices of how to render your video depending on your quality choices in iDVD Preferences.

  • How do I know if my Airport Extreme can do WDS?

    Hi,
I have a 4th generation Airport Extreme and an Airport Express (don't know the generation). My plan is to create an extended wireless network based on WDS.
On my Airport Express I can select 'participate in a WDS network' in 'Wireless Mode', but I'm not able to select it on the Extreme. Both are running 7.5.2.
Does the 4th generation, in fact, do WDS or not? If so, how?
    ..Jacob

One thing I'm abit confused about is, that both my APs are connected with ethernet to my network, and I would like all communication between the APs about 'extending the network' to be inside ethernet, since they can't hardly see each other and with this I get really poor performance. Is this possible in anyway?
My solution now is I have created my wireless network on both APs, and allow them to be extended. Is this the best way to get the best performance in my situation?
You have what is called a "roaming" network if you have both wireless access points configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security and password. This type of setup allows maximum bandwidth on the network.
So, you would not use either WDS or the "extend a wireless network " setting with the "roaming" setup.

  • How to change default file permissions so others can write to file

We have 15 people sharing files on a network. If we open a file on the network, work on it, and save it, it is readable and writeable for everybody. But if we drag the file off the network, work on it on our own hard drive, and save it, and THEN drag it back to the network, it is read-only for everybody. Documents made on our own hard drives are, by default, read-only for others.
This is a real time waster for us!
This means that every time we make a document on our own hard drives, we have to remember to go to the extra trouble to change it's permissions before we put it on our network. Please, is there some way to change the default settings, so that if I, say, save a Word doc on my hard drive and then move it to the network, it is readable and writeable by everybody without me having to change it's permissions?

Sounds like you are not using ACLs.  When you double click your share point in Server.app, how many entries do you have in the Permissions window?  If you have only 3 then you are not using ACLs which explains why your permissions are not inheriting.  POSIX permissions, the base three of owner, group, and everyone, do not inherit.  You need to add at least one more permission entry to the table.  This is called an ACE (access control entry).  Together, you are building an ACL (access control list).  Try not to use users.  Always add groups if possible as it is easier to manage and never requires propagation of the permissions.

  • Superdrive: CD works/DVD does not

I have a situation that I have not been able to find articles on. When I place a CD (audio for instance) into the superdrive of my iBook the appropriate program (iTunes in this case) works. If I place a DVD in the disc will not be able to be read.
I have tried multiple data/audio CDs and they all work. I have tried multiple data/video DVDs with no luck.
    Help!

I have this exact same problem, I dunno what to do, should I get it serviced or is the lens dirty?

  • Superdrive will open DVD but not CD

My Superdrive will open and read a DVD with no problem but refuses to load music or software CD`s . This has recently developed - it used to be fine.
It is the Sony DVD RW DW-U10A.
I have tried the air duster but to no avail.
iMac is coming up to four years old - surely not time for the scrap heap yet ?

    RE: Battery Replacement Suggestion
    Hi.
I also have intermittent superdrive problems on my iMac and this clock battery suggestion is about the only thing I haven't tried yet.
My issues are with DVD playback mostly, but burning CD's has a mind of its own - sometimes it burns, sometimes it doesn't.
DVD Player is 4.0, but other players i.e. VLC encounter the same playback problems.
iMac is 17-inch flat 1.25 GHz
Panther 10.3.9 (will not be updating this machine to Tiger)
Superdrive: SONY DVD RW DW-U10A, Revision A43h
Could you direct me to specific documentation or step-by-step instructions on the clock issue?
    Thanks!

  • How do i make an apple ID that can download apps But not have a credit card entered

My iphone keeps saying i must put in a credit card to download but i dont want to put in my credit card number

If you only want the free apps, take a look here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534
Read the steps carefully as the order in which you follow them is  critical. Note that you can do this only when creating a new Apple ID. You cannot use an existing ID.
You will of course not be able to get anything other than the free apps without entering in some sort of payment method (credit card, prepaid iTunes card, gift certificate, etc.)

Thanks, this is not an ideal answer but probably the most sensible one in my case.
I will try it unless someone has a better suggestion, but I'll wait a bit as it will take me a few days anyway (I had actually tried to create a new smaller playlist or download by album, but at this stage the music app is not letting me queue a list of songs for download - I think I will have to disable and re-enable iTunes match which will probably delete all the songs).
I have to say I am not very impressed with Apple here - having an online backup of all your data and beeing able to restore it to a new device easily was a strong selling point of iCloud. For music, they are Definitly not delivering at the stage.
