Just wondering if any one knows if all iphone verizon 4 phones are unlocked or not?
I need to take this phone out of the country and i need to know what to do!

Did you buy it from Apple or an Apple authorized reseller and did you specifically request an unlocked iPhone?
Otherwise, there is no way to tell from the phone itself. Stick a SIM card in it and see if it works would be one test. Plug it into iTunes and update or restore it, then try a SIM and see if it works would be a better test.

If the iPhone is "locked" that simply means that you can only use it with the Wireless Mobile Carrier that it's locked to, such as AT&T or whomever. But you can always update the version of iOS you are running, so go ahead and update to 5.1.1. That will not hurt anything.

Unless you requested & AT&T approved your unlocking request, your phone is locked to AT&T if it came with an AT&T sim card.

I think you were given very bad information. If you purchased a new iPhone anytime prior to the last couple of days (when the availability of unlocked iPhones in the US was announced), it was almost certainly locked to AT&T and if so, then no amount of restoration or anything else the Apple Store could do would unlock it.
I don't think there's any way they could have sold you an unlocked iPhone unless they had them in stock well in advance of the day Apple made the announcement. You can wait until your T-Mobile SIM arrives and see if it works, if you wish, but if it were me I wouldn't wait since that might put me beyond the time when the Apple Store could officially accept a return, potentially making it harder for you to get the issue resolved. I really think you need to go back to the Apple Store and talk to them, preferably with the store manager involved, and get absolutely confirmation, with agreement that you can return the iPhone if the T-Mobile SIM doesn't work, that the iPhone they sold you is indeed unlocked.

If you've received an SMS telling you that your unlock request has been approved, connect your phone, iTunes running & restore it from backup. You should see the "Congratulations" screen once the restore completes.

Ask the vendor where you bought your iPhone, they can tell you if it is locked, and if so, when you can have it unlocked. If you don't know, where the phone originally was bought, you can also contact Apple and have them verify the serial number of your iPhone against their database. If it has a carrier lock, they will know.
Please note that if your phone does have a carrier lock, only the carrier, who had implemented the lock, can authorize Apple to remove it.

Then backup your iPhone and then Restore it in iTunes again, but not from backup but as a new iPhone. You should get the message then you can Restore again from your backup.
This is assuming you are doing an official unlock through your cell carrier.

I went through this myself. To finish the unlock procedure, you have to go to iTunes and - in precisely this order:
1. FIRST AND FOREMOST, Backup your phone!
2. Go to iTunes with your phone connected via USB Cable, select your iPhone and click on the Restore phone to original settings button. (You are waisting your time if you right click and select Restore from backup at this point.)
3. Wait patiently.
4. You will get a pop-up screen that says Congratulations, Your iPhone is now unlocked.
5. You can now restore your phone from the backup you just made, and you're free to use whatever SIM card you want!
