How do I know my range expander is working?

My range expander is set up witd the same SSID and security as my router. I can telnet into the device, but the wireless signal has not improved where the range expander is placed.
My son's xbox is about 20ft from the expander, and the "number of bars" is the same whether the expander is plugged in or not.
Since the Xbox connects to wireless router, it must be configured correctly to be on the network.
How can I test this or verify it is working.
Both blue lights are on

What is model number of your wireless router?
Plug in the power to the Range Expander. Try to ping the IP address of your range expander when it is connected only to the power. If you get replies from the range expander then it is communicating with the router and configured properly.
If there is no improvement in signal strength then try to upgrade the firmware on the range expander.

Sorry for the simplistic nature of the questions but here goes:
Purchased a Toshiba external hard drive - plugged it in and Time Machine asked a few questions and soon it asked if I wanted to back up my internal hard drive.
After 40 plus minutes the task was completed - it stopped doing whatever it was doing - that much I'm certain.
How do I know the Toshiba is continuing to back up material? The light on the Toshiba is 'on' at times and 'off' on other times - so it's backing material up when the light is on??? Automatically, on its own?
Time Machine and/or the Toshiba do not appear to have any schedule for routine back-up (such as one would find on an anti-virus application), is there a way to schedule a backup?
Under Time Machine preferences it shows the Toshiba as the external disk. Plus I just noticed that it states the next back up will be 8:34 am today - 22 minutes from right now. What an odd time and it isn't a time I selected, at least I don't think so!
How do I access the Toshiba to see what, if anything, it has backed up?
Finally, assuming the external has backed up all the important data and should my (brand new - but that's another story) hard drive crash, how do I get the computer to ignore the damaged internal hard drive and start using the Toshiba?
As you can tell these question would be easily answered by most anyone with a modicum of computer knowledge but for me, thank goodness for Apple Discussion!

How do I know that 128 encryption is working 100%?

The website I will be using frequently requires 128 bit encryption. It mentioned using https: instead of http. How do I know for sure the site is secure? I looked for the padlock at the bottom of the screen and once it was there, next time not there.

How do I know my airport express is working and doing what I want?

I have my airport express connected to the lan in my office at the far end of my house. The LAN runs to the wifi router supplied by my internet provider. I want the airport express to give me a better signal in the far reaches of my house. In the airport utlity I did the set up of the Base station and wireless screens and in the network screen have the Router Mode set as Off (Bridge Mode) - my airport express shows a nice green light. So far so good, I hope. However, when using my ipad or Macbook wirelessly I don't seem to get any better signal than when I didn't have the airport express. How does either of my devices choose to connect though my airport express rather than my wifi router and how do I know? Have I misunderstood something completely or not configured something correctly?

So, the AirPort Express is connected back to the ISP router using a wired Ethernet cable connection, correct?
and....the AirPort Express has been configured to "create a wireless network" (not "extend a wireless network") and use the exact same wireless network name, wireless security and password as the ISP router, correct?
Most users get the name of the network and password correct, but often miss the wireless security setting. If the wireless security settings on both routers do not match up exactly, you wind up with two networks, and not one "big" network like you probably want.
and...the AirPort Express is configured to operate in Bridge Mode, correct?
If you can confirm these settings....especially the settings for "create a wireless network" and wireless security....then we are ready to do the next test. Please post back on your progress.

Sorry if this has been asked before.I recently installed the free version to protect my IP address/privacy while surfing.The installation went just fine and when the product started I created my own network with password.The program shows my created network and a green light.I assume that this means it's working....however how do I know if it's protecting my information when I surf the web? I don't see any other activity going on in the LogMeIn program console? Should I see something here to let me know that it's protecting me when I browse (I use Chrome)? Sorry if this seems like a silly question.....and thanks for all and any advice.

Hamachi2 does not protect your IP/Identity while browsing the internet.
It allows you to setup virtual netowrks to share data between computers.

Range Expander Not Working with MAC

Have been using two WRE54G Range Expanders for over two years. However, I wanted to add WEP to my system, but when I did that, the Range Expanders lights went RED. I tried to access the SETUP, but for some reason I am unable to access it. In any event, made the classic mistake of trying to fix something that really wasn't broken. Have spent three chat sessions trying to resolve all the issues and of course, after solving one, another cropped up. Here's where I'm at right now. Still cannot access the Range Expander SETUP, but more importantly one of the Range Expanders is now no longer working with the MAC's that we have at home. My wireless PC works fine, but each time I try to log in one of the MAC's, in the expander territory, it tells me that it's a secure connection, which it's not. For now, I've unplugged one of the expanders and am only using one downstairs and while I have connectivity upstairs, it's not as good as when the expander was working.
Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

OK, my problem has now shifted to another issue. I did as 'quack' suggested and got both expanders to apparently work, both had two blue lights. I tried two of the MAC's we have, the third is out of the house at the moment. Also tried my PC laptop, that worked as well.
I then decided to activate WEP on the wireless router Linksys WRT54G. Here is where it gets confusing. Both expanders now have one blue light and one red light, but when trying to connect either of the MAC's it does prompt me for the network key, which once entered, both computers get on the Internet. It took a while and a re-start for the PC to recognize the network as secure, but once it did and I entered the network key, it too worked.
What continues to baffle me is that there is no way I'm able to access the web setup for the extenders. The other routers/etc in my network connect via http://192.168.49.xxx, however when I try this using '240' and/or '241' for the expanders, nothing happens. If I try to ping those addresses, I get no reply.
What furthers confuses me, in that reading some of the other posts it seems that the expander actually showed up in your list of 'AVAILABLE WIRLESS NETWORKS', that is not the way mine is now, nor was it ever in that list. I guess I should just leave well enough alone, since everything seems to be working, but I get the sense, it's not working properly.

My iPod Touch won't turn on after it was plugged into my Xbox. The Xbox was off, I unplugged a wire to plug in my cable box, then there was a spark. I used my iPod and realized that it won't turn on. How do I know if it will still work?

Anyone know how to fix it if it will still work? Also, it won't connect to iTunes, so don't tell me to restore it because it won't. Plus, it won't go into DFU mode either.

Macbook pro fan usually has really LOW noise, and it is not really strong, so you might not feel the air.
Fans are used to cool the CPU and GPU, not batteries.
But if you need to replace fans or batteries, take it to the store. Make reservations to save time.

Range Expander not working .. Desperately needed HELP

I just bought the wireless expander yesterday. At first, i followed the instructions which came with it. As my network is WPA-enabled, i insert the CDrom to start the utility. Everything went well and the utility was able to find my network and the wireless expander. My network had a boosted range after that. However, after one of my family members accidentally pressed the auto configuration button, everything went haywired.
I tried to reset the wireless expander and start the utility again. However, this time, the utility wasn't able to find the wireless expander.I tried it over and over again , to no avail.
I came to this forum and realized that quite a lot of people are facing the same problems as me. I followed the solutions as stated. I was able to get 2 blue lights lit after that. However, my laptop kept prompting something abt ip (can't remember the exact words) And i can't used the internet at all. I went on the forum and found the solution to it. I did what it says but it's still the same. So i decided to reset the wireless expander and at the same time taking note of the ip problem.
However, after i reset the wireless expander, whatever i did wasn't able to get the 2 blue lights lit. I have been at this for 6 hrs and on my way to madness.
Can someone help me out here?
My Modem : Motorola ( Can't remember the exact model)
My wireless router : NetGear WGR614 v5
My wireless expander : Linksys WRE54G v2
What i did :
1) I connected the wireless expander to my laptop using an ethernet cable. Thus, getting a lan connection.
2) I changed the static ip address of it
IP -- 192.168.1.155
Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0
Default gateway -- 192.168.1.1
3) I was able to access to http://192.168.1.240
4) I changed the settings
ok -- here's the problem ..
When i run cmd --> ipconfig /all --> i get ip: 192.168.1.137
                                                               subnetmask : 255.255.255.0
                                                        default gateway : 192.168.1.1
When i went to my wireless router settings it was IP : 222.164.18.197
                                                                   Subnet mask : 255.255.248.0
                                                                   Default gateway: 222.164.16.1
I do not know which one to use , so i tried both settings. For the 1st one, everything went fine , until after the power cycle. The blue lights still did not lit up .
For the 2nd IP , i can't even get the webpage to change my settings.
I have tried a combination of things. Set the SSID to the same as my wireless router SSID . I have download the firmware and yet when i tried it , all 3 trys were used and nothing happened.
I have tried doing this over and over again , looking for a step that i might have missed , but i think that i have reached my wit's end..

MINdReAdEr, yep you are in trouble with the unit. The WRE54G does a good job but it can be quirky to set up. When I bought mine from Amazon, i went first to the Customer reviews for info and I there found the right way(s) to install the unit. First of all, of course, forget about the CD instructions. Enter - if necessary - the IP address you want the WRE54G to have on your wireless network - to be on same subnet as Wireless router used for your wireless network. Finally unplug the WRE54G from power outlet AND LAN connection to the computer used to set up the Extender; locate/power up the WRE54G somewhere appropriatly a bit away from the laptop, in range of the Wireless Router, and in sight from the wireless laptop for initial testing (just so you can actually see if the blue lights come on: they should in the following sequence - top blue > top red/bottom blue > both blue if everything is OK.) To initially test-drive everything, I placed the WRE54g about 30ft from the Wireless Router and 20ft from the wireless laptop (which I make sure still connects to the Wireless Router.) 9. Now re-enable the wireless connection on the computer used to set up the WRE54G. Experiment with the new connection with the WRE54G. It should kick in as the stronger connection right away (if you are CLOSER to the WRE54G then the router). You'll see that when you are connecting to/using the WRE54G to connect to your Wireless Router, the signal strength is indeed higher. In fact, if you can run NetStumbler (free wireless detection software) and thus run a Site Survey, you'll see that two APs show up, same network SSID (i.e. the Wireless Router and the WRE54G, now considered as an AP itself). Of course the WRE54G will show much stronger signals. 10. Then if all is OK, experiment with placing the WRE54G as suggested otherwise - i.e. at the periphery of the wireless range obtained by just using the Wireless Router. 11. Seems to work so far. I do not otherwise detect loss of signal or b'band speed. This thing does work. I have placed the WRE54G in many different locations and I am truly AMAZED at its range extension potential. NOTE: I assume that in case of presence of signals from BOTH the Wireless Router and the WRE54G at a given location (since both devices are on same channel/SSID/Protection scheme), one might have to reset the wireless connection on the remote(s) laptops (or to reboot) to allow it(them) to pick just one (the stronger of course) connection. I was looking all along for a way to set up the WRE54G without having to go thru the rigamarole of changing other settings elsewhere on the network, using the dreaded Install CD or other cumbersome procedure! As I change my encryption WPA code often, I'll just have to change that info in one more device (besides my WRT54G and the Linksys wireless bridge WET54G - another excellent, not cheap Linksys product which i recommend also and which I use to make my Sat internet service available to another building on my business premises). Simple enough however! I'm trying to confirm private browsing is working. Right now I have no way of knowing if it is on or not. The purple mask ,referred to in help, does not appear when selected. I should say in my privacy settings, I have selected "Never Remember" for history.

Do you mean you have checked the box: "Always use private browsing mode"? If so, it's intentional that the private browsing icon isn't displayed as we didn't want Firefox to be showing everyone within view that you're using private browsing mode IIRC.
There are some easy things you can do to confirm that you are in private browsing mode such as visiting a new website and then confirming it doesn't appear in the history window.

How do I know if my apps will work under Yosemite?

Hey guys, I'm running Yosemite right now on a mid-2011 Mac Mini that was originally running Lion. I then installed Mavericks on top of Lion(I didn't try Mountain Lion) and then I installed Yosemite on top of Mavericks. I'm planning on erasing the 500GB HDD and installing a fresh copy of Yosemite and then restore my apps and system preferences via an external Time Machine USB HDD I've been using for 2 years.
I'm having a spinning beachball issue that renders my Mac Mini unusable for a few minutes at a time and this is why I want to do a clean install of OSX.
So far my apps have been running great under Yosemite, BUT I'm worried that my apps are running great ONLY because I was running Lion and Mavericks before so the apps I'm running now are only working because the apps were installed onto the Lion and Mavericks 'layers'??? I haven't needed to re-install any apps since installing Yosemite.
How can I check that my apps will run under Yosemite?

I doubt that WRE54G will not work your Router. As you already has a N series wireless router, with this router you should be able to get a wireless range about 50Fts, just you need to change some wireless settings on your Router..
Click on the Wireless tab
- Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
- Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...
- Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
